At at 3:58 a.m., the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the National Weather Service reported that they were inside their Hoyland Avenue house with their mother, Kayleigh Bisson.

Around 4 a.m., deputies were sent out. after many accounts of trees falling on houses. One neighbor called to tell that a mother was stuck inside her house after the roof fell and she was unable to find her daughters.

The tornado churned out a 2.43-mile path through Oneida County, 300 yards wide, with peak winds of 105 mph. It caused extensive destruction in Clark Mills, a tiny hamlet in the Town of Kirkland with a population of roughly 1,600. It destroyed buildings, uprooted trees, and brought down power poles in a matter of minutes.

Kayleigh and her girls were on the first level of the Bisson family’s rental house when one of those trees, a huge maple with twin trunks that were over three feet in diameter, fell on top of them. It crashed through the roof and the second story.

The roof collapsed, trapping Kayleigh beneath it for a while. Jared Bowman, the next-door neighbor, claimed he raced to assist her in getting away. “‘Get my kids out!’ she was screaming,” he remembered. “But there was no noise. It felt very eerie and bad.”
