Daniel Lynch, her now 47-year-old ex-boyfriend, hired a man to hurl sulfuric acid in her face as part of a horrifying attack.
Katie suffered terrible injuries and severe burns as a result of the attack.
It was even more surprising to learn that Lynch had raped her in a London hotel room the night before the attack.
The two had barely been dating for perhaps two weeks at that point.

In the years that followed, Katie had to have 400 surgeries to try to repair her face and control the damage.
Lynch, on the other hand, received a life sentence for his involvement in the assault.
Katie refused to allow the events to define her life, even in the face of the anguish and physical harm.
She gradually started to regain her identity and self-esteem before turning into a crusader and supporter of burn and assault victims.
Her exceptional commitment to the community was recognized with an OBE, which she received for her relentless efforts in support services and philanthropy.
When Katie gave her fans a health update at the end of 2023, she disclosed that she had had yet another surgery to save her left eye.
She said in an Instagram video that she had spent the morning at the eye clinic because of ongoing issues.
She clarified that she had an infection and a deformity in her eye that were both extremely challenging to heal using traditional techniques.
Katie, 41, acknowledged that it was extremely taxing to deal with additional procedures so many years after the incident.
The treatments evoked memories and physical and psychological suffering related to the first trauma she endured almost twenty years earlier.
Katie took the difficult but courageous choice to start the process of receiving a prosthetic eye after attempting every option to maintain the health of her eyes.
She claimed the decision was reached over years of hardship and characterized it as approaching “the end of the road somewhat.”
Katie has now begun the process of adjusting to life with a prosthetic eye, with the help of her medical team.
She conveyed her sincere gratitude to NHS employees and private healthcare providers for their generosity and expertise.
Additionally, Katie stated that she intends to update others on her adventure as it develops.
She acknowledged that she is anxious about how well she will adjust to the prosthetic, despite her optimism.
