15 Years after Divorce, Man Sees His Ex Mother-In-Law Digging through a Dumpster – Story of the Day

Charles took Mrs. Carter, his ex-mom-in-law, home after spotting her close to a dumpster. Charles and his new wife decided to act after she told him the awful tale of how his ex-wife had expelled her for a dreadful deed.

“Mrs. Carter! Why are you here? When Charles noticed his ex-mother-in-law sitting next to a dumpster just outside his place of employment, he asked her. The elderly woman had been searching through the trash for food, and he was the manager of the restaurant.

“Charles? Is that you? Oh, sweet boy. The older woman touched her face with one hand as though to conceal her embarrassment. Charles, however, knelt down and gave her a direct look.

Fifteen years ago, on the day of his divorce from Erica, he last saw her. After discovering that Erica had cheated on him with other guys while they were married, he eventually stopped tolerating her behavior. Erica’s mother, Mrs. Carter, was embarrassed by her daughter’s behavior, but she was still her daughter.

Despite Erica’s behavior, Charles was compelled to pay alimony, and since she also kept their previous condo, he had to start over. However, once they concluded their divorce, Mrs. Carter gave him a firm embrace, wished him success, and assured him that he would soon find a lovely girl.

The elder woman had a house and no reason to sit and dig in a dumpster, even though she wasn’t wealthy. Would you please, Mrs. Carter? He nearly pleaded with her, “Tell me what happened to you.”

“They won’t get away with this, Mrs. Carter.”
“Oh, no, sweetheart. It’s such a sad tale. Are you employed here? The older woman said, “I’ll go away,” and got up to go.

“Where will you go?”

“Anywhere, anyplace. I’m not sure.”

“What about your house?”

Mrs. Carter gave him a direct look, grinned sadly, and turned to leave. But she was stopped by Charles. He was unable to simply let her go.

“Please, come with me,” Charles begged, taking the elderly woman by the arm and leading her to the eatery. He handed her a plate of food and seated her down in the kitchen. “Eat everything. It’s an order.

This time the woman’s smile was genuine, and she began to eat. She got up when she was done and wanted to go again. Charles, however, was not going to permit that either.

“Mrs. Carter, no. I’m taking you home with me. He escorted the woman to his car and said, “I want you to meet someone.”

“This is Mrs. Carter, honey. She is the mother of Erica.” Charles brought his new bride, Martha, the love of his life, to the elderly woman.

“Oh! Mrs. Carter! It is a pleasure to meet you. I’ve heard so much about you from Charles. With the largest smile on her face, Martha met the elderly woman and gave her a hug. “You were the only positive memory he has of his past, and I’m grateful for that,” she said. After a moment of being rigid, the woman instantly relaxed and accepted the hug as though she was desperate for intimacy.

“Let’s have some tea and settle in. What does that sound like? Charles said as he escorted the two women to the kitchen table and set everything up. After engaging in courteous small talk with the elderly woman, Martha finally got right to the point.

“So what took place? His wife inquired intriguingly, “Where did you meet again?”

After taking a big breath, Charles gave Mrs. Carter a serious look. He started by telling Martha where he had located the woman. “That’s actually something that Mrs. Carter has yet to tell me,” he said. “Please, can you tell me the truth now?” he asked, turning to face his ex-mother-in-law.

For a moment, Mrs. Carter seemed to gather her strength. “When you eventually divorced Erica, things took a downward turn. She began dating a lot of men, but she married the worst man she could find. She and her husband persuaded me to transfer ownership of my house to them after everything was finished.

“Why would you do that?”

“Well, they persuaded me it was the proper thing to do after I had a difficult period in terms of my health. They wouldn’t have to pay a large inheritance tax in this manner. Since Erica would still inherit the house in the event of my death, I reasoned that it was a decent idea. However, I recovered,” Mrs. Carter went on, and Charles began to speculate about what may occur next.

“Go on,” said Martha softly.

“They told me to leave the house one day since they had sold it. They laughed in my face when I asked if I would live with them! Mrs. Carter sneered and laughed mockingly, “They laughed.” “I couldn’t believe it.”

Charles exhaled, “That’s terrible.” “I am aware that Erica mistreated me, but I never thought she would harm you in that way. What about money, though? Your pension?

“They also took that. That argument convinced me. I’ve been living on the streets for a number of years, and while I receive some social security each month, it’s insufficient. “I’ve worked all my life, raised my daughter, and now I have nothing left,” Mrs. Carter concluded, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Oh no, ma’am. You are no longer alone. Martha added, “You’re staying here with us.” “If that’s okay with you, honey?”

“It is, of course! Charles answered, “We won’t leave you,” but Martha wasn’t finished.

“Mrs. Carter, they will not get away with this. In essence, they defrauded you of your money and belongings. I practice law. My team is working on this. Martha said, “This is elder abuse, and I’m going to set the law on them for it.” Mrs. Carter gave the woman a tearful grin.

“I’m grateful. Many thanks. She said, “It’s unbelievable that strangers would treat me better than my own kid.

“Mrs. Carter, we’re not strangers. At one point, I believed you were a wonderful mother-in-law, and even when I got divorced, I would still love and respect you. Martha is among Maryland’s top attorneys. Charles reassured her that she would take action.

After Martha successfully sued Erica and her new husband for their treatment of Mrs. Carter, they were forced to sell their home and make a sizable restitution payment. The older woman didn’t want them in jail, so Martha didn’t press charges. She was simply too talented.

Ultimately, the older woman witnessed how Charles and Martha began their own family and rented an apartment close by. She was involved, of course.

What does this narrative teach us?

Elders ought to be respected. The proper thing to do is to show your parents the same consideration if they raised you with love, support, money, etc.

Only a couple is subject to divorce; the rest of the family is not. Despite his separation from Mrs. Carter’s daughter, Charles continued to view her as a member of the family.
