I Saw a Homeless Man Wearing My Missing Son’s Jacket
I watched a homeless man enter a café wearing my son’s jacket, which I had mended myself, nearly a year after my teenage son vanished. I followed him to an abandoned house after he said that a boy had given it to him. Everything I believed to be true regarding my son’s disappearance was altered by what I discovered there.

Daniel, my 16-year-old son, was standing in the hallway with his backpack slung over one shoulder and his sneakers on when I last saw him.Have you completed the history assignment? I inquired.Indeed, Mom. After grabbing his jacket, he leaned in to give me a cheek kiss. “See you tonight.”
Then the door shut and he was gone. I watched him go down the street from the window.

Daniel didn’t return home that night.
Daniel was standing in the corridor when I last saw him.

At first, I wasn’t concerned.
Daniel occasionally drifted over to the park to spend the night or lingered late at school to play guitar with buddies. When he did that, he always texted me, but perhaps his phone had died.
That’s what I told myself as I prepared supper, ate it by myself, cleaned up, and put his plate in the oven.

However, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right when the sun set and his room remained empty.
I dialed his number. It ended up in voicemail.
At first, I wasn’t concerned.

I was driving around the area by ten o’clock, trying to find him.
I was sitting in a police station at midnight, reporting him missing.
After asking me questions and taking notes, the policeman finally said, “Teenagers occasionally go away for a few days.” disagreements with parents, etc.Daniel isn’t like that.”What do you mean?”Teenagers occasionally take a few days off.”Daniel is compassionate and kind. When someone runs into him, he is the type of child who apologizes.

The policeman smiled sympathetically at me. “We’ll file a report, ma’am.”
However, I could sense that he believed me to be just another scared parent who was unfamiliar with her own child.
I had no idea how accurate he was.
I went to Daniel’s school the following morning.
The principal was courteous. She allowed me to view the security footage captured by the main gate’s cameras.
He mistook me for another terrified parent who had no idea who her own child was.
I watched the tape from the previous afternoon while seated in a tiny office.
Teens came out of the building in groups, checking their phones, laughing, and pushing one another.
Then I noticed Daniel strolling next to a girl. I didn’t recognize her for a second. I was able to see her face more clearly when she looked over her shoulder.Maya,” I muttered.

Maya had made a few trips to see Daniel. quiet young lady. courteous in a cautious manner.
Daniel was strolling next to a girl when I noticed him.
They passed through the fence and headed for the bus stop in the video. After boarding a city bus together, they vanished.I turned to the principal and said, “I need to talk to Maya.” “Can I?”Maya is no longer enrolled in this school. She pointed to the video. “She abruptly changed. Her last day here was that day.
I went straight to Maya’s place via car.
The door was answered by a man.She left this place on that day.Would you please let me see Maya? On the day my son vanished, she was with him. If he said anything to her, I must know.”
For a long time, he scowled at me. Then something appeared to shut off in his face.Maya is not present. She will be spending some time with her grandparents. He halted as he was about to shut the door. “I’ll ask her if she knows anything, okay?”
Some instinct told me to press harder, but I had no idea how, so I stood there unsure of what to say.
He shut the door after that.
Something seemed to shut off in his face.
The next few weeks were the worst of my life.
We posted on every community board and local Facebook group we could find, as well as put out posters.
The police also conducted searches, but these became less frequent as the months passed. After a while, everyone began referring to Daniel as a runaway.
My son was someone I knew. Daniel was not the type of boy who simply disappeared without saying anything.
And no matter how long it took, I would never give up on finding him.
Daniel was referred to as a runaway by everyone.
I was in a different city for a business meeting about a year later. Eventually, I forced myself to resume some semblance of a regular routine, including work, grocery shopping, and Sunday night phone conversations with my sister.
I went to a tiny café when my meeting ended, got a coffee, and waited at the counter.
I whirled around when the door suddenly opened behind me. An old man had entered. Bundled up against the cold, he was walking slowly while counting cash in his palm. He appeared to be homeless.
He also had on my son’s jacket.
I was in a different city for a business meeting about a year later.
It was the exact jacket my son had taken that day before heading off to school, but it wasn’t exactly like his.
The guitar-shaped patch covering the ripped sleeve told me it wasn’t just a comparable coat. I had personally stitched that on myself. When the man turned to face the counter and requested tea, I also noticed the paint stain on the back.
I gestured to him. “Add that man’s tea and a bun to my order.”
After giving him a quick look, the barista nodded.
The elderly guy turned. “Thank you, ma’am, you’re so—””Where did you purchase that jacket?”Put a bun and that man’s tea to my order.”
The man looked down at it. “A boy gave it to me.”Do you have brown hair? Approximately sixteen?
The man gave a nod.
The bartender extended his order. The elderly man and I were separated by a woman in a pencil skirt and a man in a suit. I moved sideways to avoid them, but the elderly man had vanished.
I looked around the café and saw him walking out into the pavement. Please wait. I pursued him.I got it from a boy.
The sidewalks were packed when I attempted to catch up to him. I was left behind when others parted for him.
Two blocks later, I noticed that the elderly man had not once stopped to ask for spare change. He hadn’t even paused to sip the tea or eat the bun. He was making deliberate movements.
My instinct prompted me to follow him instead of trying to catch up.
That’s what I did.
I trailed him all the way to the city’s edge.
He was making deliberate movements.
He paused outside a dilapidated, deserted home. It was encircled by a messy, weed-filled garden that blended in perfectly with the surrounding forest. It seems to have been neglected for a considerable amount of time.
The elderly man softly rapped on the door.
I took a step forward. At one time, the elderly man turned, but before he saw me, I hid behind a tree.
The door opened, and I heard it.”You told me to let you know if anyone ever inquired about the jacket,” the elderly guy remarked.
He paused outside a dilapidated, deserted home.
I looked around the tree.
I thought I would pass out when I saw who was standing at the doorway of that run-down old house.Daniel. I staggered over to the door.
My son raised his head. His terrified eyes grew wide.
Behind Daniel, a shadow moved. He glanced over his shoulder, back at me, then did the last thing I ever would’ve anticipated. He took off running.Daniel, hold on! I accelerated, running passed the elderly man and inside the house.
Behind Daniel, a shadow moved.
A door banged shut. I skidded into the kitchen after racing down the hallway. Just in time to see Daniel and a girl dash into the woods, I pulled open the back door.
Screaming his name, I chased after them, but they were too quick.
I misplaced them.
I went directly to the closest police station and told the desk officer everything. He questioned, “Why would he flee from you?”
I misplaced them.”I’m not sure,” I replied. “But I need you to help me find him before he disappears again.”Ma’am, I’ll send out an alarm.”
I sat down. My entire body stiffened each time the door opened.
I couldn’t stop asking myself the same questions: What if he’s already on a bus? What happens if he disappears? What if that was my only opportunity?
The cop approached me near midnight. Before he vanishes once more, I need your assistance in finding him.”We located him. He was close to the bus stop. He’s being brought in right now.”
I felt a surge of relief. “And the girl who was with him?”He was by himself.
Daniel was led into a tiny interview space.
It wasn’t until I felt tears on my face that I realized I was weeping. “You are still alive. Do you realize how anxious I’ve been? And why did you flee from me when I eventually discovered you?
He glanced at the table below. “I didn’t run from you.””And the girl who accompanied him?”Then what—”Maya was the reason I ran.
After that, he told me everything.
Maya had confided in Daniel during the weeks before to his disappearance. She told him that her stepfather had been getting increasingly quick-tempered and unpredictable. Almost every night, he broke stuff and yelled.Daniel remarked, “She said she couldn’t stay there anymore.” “She was scared.”
After that, he told me everything.I believe I met him. A man answered the door when I went to her residence to ask whether she knew what had happened to you. Maya was staying with her grandparents, he informed me.
Daniel gave a headshake. “He lied.”
I reclined in my seat. “Why didn’t she tell a teacher all these time? And how does this relate to your fleeing?”He told a falsehood.Daniel’s face twisted. “She didn’t think anyone would believe her, and I… I didn’t know what else to do.” “She had a packed backpack when she arrived at school that day. She informed me that she would be attending that afternoon. She refused to listen to my attempts to talk her out of it.Thus, you accompanied her.Mom, I couldn’t let her go on her own. I wanted to give you a call a lot.”Why didn’t you?”I was at a loss for what to do.Because I assured Maya that I would keep our whereabouts a secret. He took a swallow. “She thought if anyone found us, they’d send her back.”And when you saw me today?”I was afraid she would be discovered by the cops.
I stroked my hair. “All right, all right. However, what about that elderly man? He claimed that you instructed him to let you know if anyone inquired about the jacket.I promised Maya I wouldn’t tell anyone where we were.”
He cast a downward glance. “I thought… if someone ever recognized it… maybe they’d know I was alive.”
I gazed at him. “You wanted me to find you?”
He gave a shrug. “I’m not sure. Perhaps. I didn’t want you to think I was gone forever, even though I had promised Maya I wouldn’t tell. I did it, but I never told her. She would have believed that I had deceived her.
Maya was discovered by the police a few days later. The complete truth emerged after the cops had a private conversation with her. An inquiry was launched. Maya was placed in protective custody after her stepfather was taken out of the house.
She was safe for the first time in a long time.
Maya was discovered by the police a few days later.
A few weeks later, I observed the two of them on the couch from the doorway of my living room. They were viewing a film on television. Between them was a dish of popcorn. They appeared to be typical children.
For nearly a year, I had thought my son had disappeared into thin air, leaving without saying anything or turning around. However, my son had not fled. Not the way everyone thought, anyhow.
Because he was the type of boy who couldn’t let someone leave alone, he had stayed by their side in every city, refuge, and chilly, deserted building.
Additionally, he was the type of boy who offered his jacket as a gesture for someone to follow him if they liked him.
I’m happy that I did.
