My 19-Year-Old Son Was in a Terrible Car Crash – But the Real Shock Was the Woman He Had in the Car

I realised right away that something wasn’t right when the call came in the middle of the night. However, nothing could have prepared me for what I would see when I arrived at the hospital.

Maren is my name. Leo is my 19-year-old son, and I am 47 years old. He is everything to me.

It has always been just the two of us. Leo gives me a peck on the cheek and says, “Love you, Mom,” with sincerity, even though he’s growing into a young man.

However, it felt different that evening.

He is everything to me.

I was awakened by Leo’s cry at 1:08 a.m. I said, “What’s wrong?”Nothing, Mom. Please just stay up for me.

I gave a drowsy smile. “Why?””I’m taking someone home.”I taunted, “Ooh, a girl?””No,” he blurted out. Then, in a more subdued tone, “But she’s definitely someone… very special.” I would like you to meet her right away.

My chest tightened due to something in the way he said.”What’s wrong?”When I get there, I’ll explain. Just have faith in me.

Reluctantly, I consented.

That was his final statement.

While preparing a cup of coffee to keep me awake at 2:03 a.m., I got a call from the hospital.

They reported that a head-on collision occurred on Route 9.

To be honest, all I can recall of the drive to the hospital is the cacophony, flashing lights, and my trembling hands on the wheel. When I get there, I’ll explain.”

They informed me that Leo was undergoing surgery as I hurried into the reception area. He was barely alive.

I couldn’t sit in the waiting area because I was so nervous. A doctor came in to speak with me while I was pacing. The doctor stated, “The passenger is in a coma.” “She has no identification (ID).”I am aware that she lacks identification. I muttered, “My son told me.”

I didn’t tell them that I didn’t know her, though, because I was in a stupor.

Following the doctor’s departure, a nurse gave me a plastic bag and promised to keep me informed on both patients. The woman’s possessions.

He was barely alive.

The bag contained a little silver locket, sunglasses, and mints.

Even before I opened it, my hands began to shake.

Even though I didn’t want to look, I did.

The world simply stopped when I opened the locket.

Because it wasn’t just a familiar snapshot inside.

I hadn’t seen anything like that in decades.

I believed that nobody else in the world still possessed it.

I didn’t want to look for some reason.

That’s when I realised who Leo had been bringing home that evening.

I wish I had been prepared for the truth, but I wasn’t.

I was eighteen in the picture inside the locket.

With my hair pulled back and my eyes swollen from crying all night, I was sitting on a hospital bed.

A baby in my arms.

I never brought the baby home.

I shut the locket and took a seat in the chair next to me.

I was seated on a medical bed.

I didn’t understand what the nurse said.

I put the locket in my hand.

It had been years since I had given that day any thought.

A few hours later, Leo awoke.

The doctor informed me that I could see him just after sunrise.

In some way, he appeared smaller. Pale tubes.

However, my boy had returned.

It had been years since I had given that day any thought.

I took a seat after pulling a chair.Hello.

His eyes opened momentarily. He needed a moment to concentrate.Mom… “His voice was rough.”I’m present.

He took a swallow. “Is she okay?” he asked, scarcely moving his lips.

I was hesitant.She is unconscious.

He closed his eyes, overcome with guilt. His cheeks were wet with tears.

His eyes opened momentarily.

I took a tissue out of my bag and used it to clean his face.”Where did you find her, Leo?”He spoke softly, “I met her at the community center.” “The one next to my school. After classes, I’ve started helping out there.”

I waited while nodding.A few weeks ago, she arrived. didn’t say anything at first. However, she continued to return.

His tone became somewhat more steady.I’m not sure why, but I felt like I was drawn to her and wanted to talk to her.”Where did you find her, Leo?”Our relationship began slowly. People don’t trust her. Her past most likely has something to do with it. Mom, she has no one. Not a family. There’s nowhere to go. Only that locket.

In my throat, I could feel my heartbeat. She is attempting to discover her identity. She claimed that the locket is all she has ever owned.

Leo looked at my face. She lacks faith in others.Weeks later, Mom showed me the picture in the locket. “I thought you might know who she is because the woman in it looked like you when you were younger,” he whispered. “I thought you could help lead Elena somewhere.”

Elena.

He addressed her by name as though she were a close friend.

She was obviously important to him.I believed you could be of assistance.

I reclined, let out a slow breath, and shut my eyes.

Holding it in any longer served no purpose.Leo. Before I could control my voice, it trembled. “There’s something I should’ve told you a long time ago.”

When he shifted to correct himself, he winced. “What?”

I briefly saw my young kid again as I stared at him.

I ought to have informed him back then.

However, I didn’t.

I relaxed and let out a slow breath.I said, “I became pregnant when I was a teenager.”

The words lingered between us.

Leo remained silent. He simply gazed at me.My parents and your grandparents were strict when I was still in high school. They were deeply religious before then, but they are now different and more liberal. They wouldn’t even think about having an abortion. I therefore carried the infant.

My hands were trembling. To halt it, I pressed them together.

Leo remained silent.I had no voice. I was informed that I would receive a year of homeschooling. After I gave birth, she was adopted by a member of our church, and I would carry on with my education. They would expel me if I deviated from the plan.

Leo furrowed his brow. “Her?”

I gave a nod.I had a daughter. My lover at the time, her father, was unaware. To avoid rumours, I never went back to the same school.

The room was silent.I had no say in the matter.

Beside him, machines beeped steadily.

I made myself continue.I was afraid and not prepared to be a father. My folks took care of everything. On the day of her birth, they took her away.

Leo’s expression gradually changed. His initial expression was one of confusion, followed by something more profound. How come you never told me?

I gave a headshake. “I was unable to. It seemed like opening something I didn’t know how to close each time I tried.”And you didn’t see her again?””No.”I wasn’t prepared to have children.””I recall your grandmother taking a picture of me and the baby,” I continued. “I was sobbing, depressed, and hurt. I had no idea that she passed it on or kept it. I didn’t believe anyone did.

Leo looked past me, as though his thoughts were finally coming together.”Elena,” he muttered to himself.

I gave a slow nod. Thus, she’s He paused, then made another attempt.”Is she my sister?”

Between us, the word hit hard.I was in tears.”Indeed.

Leo looked up at the ceiling, turning his head slightly.

I briefly feared he would become irate or shut down.

Rather, he chuckled softly and without humour. He whispered, “Elena kept saying she didn’t feel like she belonged anywhere.” “But somehow found it safe and comforting to talk to a child.”

I had no idea how to respond to that.

He chuckled softly.”She told me her adoptive parents dropped her at an orphanage when she was little, and that was all she had,” Leo went on. No documents. No names. Just that.

My eyes started to well up with tears once more. Once more, the shame and guilt were choking me.Since she was old enough to live independently, she has moved about in an attempt to discover her identity and origins.

I glanced at my hands.

All those years…

She was also out there.

“Looking.”That locket was all she had.

My son turned to look at me.You ought to go see how she’s doing.”

I froze.I said, “I don’t think I can,” as my flight instinct took over. This time, he spoke more firmly, “You can and you should, Mom.” “She ought to be informed. You may not have another chance to speak with her. There is no assurance that she will awaken from her coma.

I took a while to respond.

since he was correct.

And that’s what made it more difficult.I doubt I will be able to.

With my legs still shaky, I stood carefully.”I’ll try,” I murmured.

A part of me marvelled at the amazing young man I had raised—so young yet already so wise.

I knew there was no turning back as soon as I finished speaking.

There was silence in the hallway outside Elena’s room.

I paused in front of the door, my fingers lingering over the doorknob.

I considered going back for a moment.

A portion of me was amazed.

I considered acting as though I had never opened the locket.

However, I was unable to.

No more.

With a groan, I opened the door.

It was dark in the room. Softly, machines hummed. And there she was.

Elena.

She appeared younger than I had anticipated. pale. Even so. Her hair was all over the pillow.

I simply stood there staring at her face.

There was something familiar about her.

Like a memory I’ve never allowed myself to hold onto.

She was there.

I moved the chair closer and took a seat next to her bed.”I have no idea where to begin,” I said.

I looked at her once more. Nothing to move.

I continued as a result.”My parents took care of everything, so I didn’t know where you were taken,” I said. They assured me that it was over, that I should go on, and that you would lead a happy life.”

I exhaled a little.Everything was taken care of by my folks.”When I was a little older, I attempted to ask enquiries, but they consistently blocked me. I had no idea what your name was.

Even then, that section still seemed like an excuse.Years later, I made an attempt to find you. I checked records and made calls, but nothing turned up. Not a trail. After a while, I convinced myself that you were alright somewhere.

My eyes were burning. That was sufficient, I persuaded myself.I had no idea what your name was.

I bent over.”I apologise,” I said. “For everything. for not finding you and for not trying harder.”

It was easy to say those words back then. When you wake up, I have no idea if you’ll want to see me. However, I’m here now.”

I hesitated just before I touched her hand as I extended my hand.

Then I did.

It was warm.

genuine.This time, I’m not leaving.”

And for an instant, I believed that was it.I’m here right now.”

Then her fingers began to move!

I froze.

Once more, her hand twitched.

Then her eyes slowly opened!

After that, everything happened quickly.

I hit the call button. The room was crowded with voices. The nurses hurried in. A physician came next.

They led me out with firmness but gentleness.

I was back in the hallway in an instant.

standing. waiting.

Then her fingers began to move!

Leo was in his room, fast asleep. When I was sick of waiting to hear about Elena, I went to see how he was doing.

At last, a physician entered.”She’s definitely awake,” he remarked. “Adaptable. Stable, but still feeble. You can see her, but not for very long.

Before he could finish his statement, I was already in motion.

I opened the door with a push.

Elena had her eyes open.

She then looked away.

and observed me.She is undoubtedly awake.

My entire being came to a halt.

Elena scowled.”I know you,” she remarked. “You’ve… been in my head before.”

I moved in closer. “I’m Maren,” I softly introduced myself.

She kept a careful eye on me.”I can’t recall the collision,” Elena whispered. “Just flashes. After that, nothing. That’s alright.

I took a seat next to her once more.

I took her hand without hesitation this time.I don’t recall the collision. Why you feel… familiar is beyond me.”I believe I understand why,” I remarked.

I told her everything.

Elena was staring at me when I was done.

Her eyes gradually filled.”You’re saying…” she began, pausing.

I gave a soft nod.I am your mum.

The word lingered between us.I believe I understand why.

Elena did not remove her hand.”In the picture in my locket, you’re the woman holding me,” she remarked casually.Yes, I am. I also want to avoid losing you once more.”

A long silence ensued.

She then gave a nod.

Tears trickled into her hair from her temples.”I promise never to leave your side again,” I assured her.I want to avoid losing you once more.

Leo was using a cane and moved slowly the following day.

Together, we made our way to Elena’s chamber.

I didn’t want to go back this time.

When we walked in, Elena looked up and grinned.”Hey,” Leo said.”Hey,” Elena answered.

I had no desire to go back.I suppose. “I brought you home at last,” Leo remarked.

Elena’s gaze wavered between him and me.Yes,” she murmured. “You did.”

I watched them while I stood there.

And for the first time in a long time…

There was nothing lacking.
