I Found a Baby Wrapped in My Missing Daughter’s Denim Jacket on My Porch

When I opened my front door five years after my daughter disappeared, I saw a newborn wrapped in her old denim jacket.

I believed that all would be clarified by the note in the pocket. Rather, it took me to the world she had created without me and the reality her father had concealed.

I believed I was dreaming for a split second.

It was shortly after six o’clock. I stood there with my coffee cooling in one hand, still wearing my robe and my hair half-clipped.

Someone had rung the bell once, quickly and sharply, as people do when they don’t want to be caught waiting, so I had opened the door.

On my porch, there was a baby.

nor a doll, nor a trick of the mind. A real infant, staring up at me, little and pink.

I believed that I was dreaming.

A faded denim jacket covered her.

My knees nearly buckled. That jacket was familiar to me.

When Jennifer was fifteen, I had purchased it for her. “Mom, it’s not vintage if it still smells like somebody else’s perfume,” she replied, rolling her eyes.

My coffee sloshed on the floorboards because I put it down so quickly. “Oh my God.”

The infant released one hand. I knelt, put two fingers to her cheek, then moved my palm to her chest to feel it rise.

That jacket was familiar to me.

She was peaceful and cozy.”All right,” I muttered, though I was talking more to myself than to her. “All right, my love. I’ve got you.

I carried her inside after lifting the basket.

My sixteen-year-old daughter had disappeared five years prior.

Her father, Paul, had prevented her from seeing a boy named Andy, so one minute she was slamming cupboards, and the next she was gone so totally that it seemed like the universe had engulfed her.

The police conducted a search. The neighbors assisted. Every church bulletin board in town, the grocery shop window, and the gas station all had pictures of my daughter.

At sixteen, my daughter had disappeared.

Nothing returned. Not a single actual lead. Not a single response.

Paul accused me in private at first, then as if he wanted a crowd. The week after she vanished, he informed me, “You ought to have known.”Paul, I had no idea she was heading out.”Yes, Jodi, you never know anything until it’s too late.

After that, he stated harsher things, to the point where I began to believe him.You ought to have been aware.

He moved in with a woman named Amber after the third year, leaving me in the same peaceful home with Jennifer’s room closed at the end of the hall.

On paper, we were still married. I simply lacked the motivation to complete what he had begun.

And suddenly there was a baby wearing my daughter’s jacket in my kitchen.

I pushed myself to move after placing the basket on the table.

There were two sleepers, wipes, formula, and a diaper bag. The person who brought her hadn’t abandoned her and fled. This was something they had planned.

On paper, we were still married.

The infant continued to stare, somber as a small judge.

Once more, I touched the jacket. The area where Jennifer used to chew her left cuff when she was nervous was still frayed.

I reached into the pocket.

paper. I felt lightheaded because my pulse was so loud in my ears. I used both hands to smooth the note as I carefully unfolded it.Jodi

Andy is my name. I am aware that this is a horrible method, but I am at a loss on what to do.

I’m Hope. She is the daughter of Jennifer. She is also mine.I am aware that this is an awful method.

Jen used to say that Hope should be with you if something were to happen to her. Over the years, she preserved this jacket. She claimed that it was the final piece of her home that she would never give up.

I apologize.

You don’t know certain things. Paul withheld information from you.

I’ll explain everything when I return.

Please look after Hope.

— Andy “You are unaware of certain things.

My hands began to tremble.”No,” I muttered. “No, Jen. No.”

I had given up on my daughter’s return after five years. Hope blinked at me now.

I forced myself to move after pressing the note to my lips. I informed the pediatric clinic over the phone that I was bringing in a newborn that had been left in my care.

I then gave Paul a ring.

“What now, Jodi?” was his response.Come on over here.

Hope gave me a blink.I have job, Jodi. “I have a life.”Additionally, your granddaughter is sitting on my kitchen table.”What?” he inquired.Paul, come on over.”

Twenty minutes later, he arrived. Amber remained in the vehicle.

Paul entered my kitchen, grumbling and irritated. His face lost all of its color as he saw the jacket.

He came to a complete stop. “Where did you get that?”Your granddaughter is sitting on my kitchen table.

Before I responded, I picked up Hope. “That was my question.”

After glancing at the note I was holding, he moved away.Paul, you knew more than you disclosed.

“Avoid doing this. Were you aware of her existence? that she went off and lived her life? that she moved away to be with a loved one?Jodi…”Paul, did you know?Paul, you knew more than you disclosed.

Hope was aroused. I gave her a shoulder bounce.

Paul massaged his jaw. “She called me once.”

I was unable to talk for a moment.”She what?”

He was cornered since he now had a furious expression. “A few months following her departure. She claimed to be with Andy.

She claimed to be alright. She gave me a call once. You also gave me the impression that she had passed away. You advised me to grieve for my child as she would not return.”Jodi, she made a decision. Don’t hold me accountable for her choice.”

At that moment, Hope let out a weak cry, which strangely made matters worse. I instinctively moved with her while massaging her back in circles.

For five years, you told me there were no answers. He yelled, “I told her if she came home, she came home alone.” “She was sixteen, close to seventeen.

She had no idea what she was doing. She desired to sacrifice her life for a futureless college dropout. What should I have done? Encourage it.Don’t penalize me for her choice.”No,” I replied. “You’d rather be right than have her home, even if it cost us our daughter.”

Amber materialized in the doorway. “Paul…”

I avoided even glancing at her. “You don’t get a word in here.”

Paul gazed at Hope as if she could help him in some way.

Rather, I reached for my keys and the diaper bag.”Hope and I are going to the clinic,” I said. “And you must leave when I return. To find out if you were ashamed, I called you here.

I avoided even glancing at her.Jodi…”I really do mean it. I’ll inform the police that you withheld communication from the mother of a missing child if you’re still here.”

He and Amber started to move as a result.

Dr. Evans examined Hope at the clinic and informed me that she appeared healthy, but slightly underweight. She posed thoughtful queries. I responded thoughtfully. I showed her the jacket, the materials, and the note.

She inquired about my family’s support.

I nearly burst out laughing.I said, “My coworkers and I have coffee.”

Sadly, she grinned. “Sometimes that’s how it starts.”I’ll call the police if you’re still here.”

By lunchtime, I received three missed calls from Paul that I erased without listening, as well as temporary emergency papers from a social worker named Denise.

Mortgage payments don’t care about tragedy, so by two I was back at the diner.

Denise had warned me not to leave Hope with anyone I didn’t trust, and trust had become a short list, so I brought her.

After glancing at the infant carrier behind the register, my supervisor Lena stated, “You have exactly thirty seconds before you tell me what on earth happened.”

I gave her enough information.

Hope was with me.

She put her hand to her chest. “Jodi.”

I took a swallow. “I know.”

At four, the bell over the diner entrance sounded.

Hope was dozing off in the carrier next to the pie case while I was pouring coffee for a truck driver in booth six.

Andy appeared older and incomplete due to grief, even though he was just twenty-three or twenty-four years old. With a baseball cap in both hands, he stood just inside the door.

Hope was the first person he looked at. Next, to me.

Andy was a young man.”Hello, Jodi,” he said.

Before my mouth spoke, every nerve in my body responded.”Who’s asking?”Andy is my name.

He appeared completely destroyed. Not hazardous. simply destroyed.”I cherished your daughter,” he declared.

In the peculiar way that busy places behave when your entire life tips, the diner fell silent around me.I cherished your daughter.

Without saying anything, Lena removed the pot from my grasp.

I gestured toward the rear booth. “Sit down.”

Like a man reporting for judgment, he sat.

I moved to take the seat across from him. Beside me, hope stirred. “Start talking.”

He had to glance down since his eyes were filling up so quickly. “She wanted to come home so many times.”

I grasped the table’s edge. “Then why didn’t she?””Start conversing.”He said, “Because of your husband,” without showing any emotion, which somehow made it worse.

“She sobbed for hours after making that initial call. He warned her that she would be wasting her life if she returned with me. She would stay away and let you go on if she truly loved you, he said.

I closed my eyes.

Andy continued. “I suggested to her that he might be bluffing. She said he wasn’t.”

“”Andy, what happened to my daughter?”

Then he broke. He only covered his lips with one hand and shook his shoulders once before gathering himself.”What happened to Andy, my daughter?”

“Hope was born three weeks ago,” he stated. “After giving birth, Jennifer experienced bleeding. They claimed to have put an end to it. They said she was alright. She wasn’t.

I was unable to feel my feet.He swallowed before she did. “She instructed me before the end that Hope should come to you if anything ever happened. She forced me to make a pledge.

Hope made a drowsy little noise behind me.After giving birth, Jennifer bled.

I turned and put one finger to her blanket. My chest ached as I turned to face Andy, who was observing me with a kind of weary appreciation.I inquired, “What was she like?” “When she was with you?”

His expression softened.”Her entire face lit up with laughter,” he remarked. “As if she was powerless to stop it. She continued to talk about you, mostly when she was exhausted.

Small things: “When my mother baked, she hummed.””Any stain could be removed by my mom.” “My mom always knew when I was lying.”” She was constantly missing you.”What was she like?”I muttered, “Why did you leave Hope?” “Why not come to me yourself?”

He examined the carrier. “Because I hadn’t slept for four days.” Because I could hear Jennifer barely breathing whenever she sobbed. Because I was afraid I would abandon her, let her down, or despise myself for being insufficient.”

He massaged his face with both hands.I rang your bell. I was waiting for you to come get her in the car across the street. That’s when I left.

I broke.

In the diner booth, I started crying. With his head bowed and both hands covering his face, Andy sobbed as well, albeit more quietly.”Why did you abandon Hope?”

“Do you want to be in Hope’s life?” I inquired after a minute.

He quickly looked up. “Yes. Yes, I do. I’ll support her. I simply need assistance. There is nobody else with us.

I gave a nod. “All right. So, Andy, don’t abandon her.””I won’t,” he declared. “I swear I won’t.”

That night, Andy drove his truck alongside me as I drove home. Paul was in the driveway, waiting.

He pointed when he spotted Andy. “You!”

I raised Hope in my embrace. “You don’t get a say here, Paul.”Then don’t vanish from her.”

He disregarded me. “You destroyed my child’s life! “Where is she right now?”

Andy was pale, but he didn’t back down. “No. Jen cherished me. The rest was damaged by your pride.

Paul took a stride in his direction.”Don’t,” I said.

He came to a halt.

I gave him a direct look. “You insisted that she had vanished. She wasn’t. Your pride simply couldn’t follow her.”

Paul parted his lips, but nothing came out.

I unlocked the front door. “Hope trusted me with Jennifer. Not you. Paul, go see Amber.

He departed. The rest was damaged by your pride.

Andy stood clumsily inside as I warmed a bottle.

Hope accepted it when I gave it to him.”While you settle down, I’ll prepare dinner for us,” I remarked.

Andy’s eyes were misty as he gazed at me.
