Everyone in Class Laughed at My Boyfriend Because of His Height
My boyfriend’s height made everyone giggle when I came into prom holding his hand. I was even asked by one girl if I had brought my “little brother.”
I was about to cry when our maths teacher took us onstage, turned down the music and told us a reality that stunned everyone in the room.

As soon as my boyfriend, Elliot, and I entered the gym, the taunting and laughter began.Someone snorted next to the punch table, “Oh my God.” “Did she seriously bring her little brother to prom?”
A few individuals started laughing right away.
In an attempt to get attention, another voice yelled more loudly. It appears that 1.5 individuals attended tonight.
More chuckles. I had no idea how insane it would get, but I knew at the time that it would be a long night. Was she really going to prom with her younger brother?

Elliot’s hand tightened around mine for a brief while before it relaxed once more.”Don’t look at them,” he quietly muttered.
However, there was no way not to.
Girls giggled and covered their mouths. Boys stared at each other, elbowing each other. A few even took out their phones.
What’s the worst part?
All of this was no longer novel.
A few even took out their phones.

Elliot had transferred to our school in the middle of his sophomore year two years prior. When he first entered the classroom behind the principal, I could still clearly recall how the room became silent.
He suffered from achondroplasia. dwarfism. He was short enough for people to notice him before they noticed anything else about him, such as his intelligence, his grin, or his evil sense of humour.
He was presented by our teacher just like any other student, but by lunchtime, the jokes had already begun.

He suffered from achondroplasia.Do school photographs cost half as much? One boy remarked. Is he even able to get to the top locker? One more person answered.Has someone lost a child? One of the popular females told her pals.
Because everyone else was laughing, most people did too.
I didn’t.
Three days later, no one else would sit next to him in chemistry, so I did.
I believe Elliot initially anticipated sympathy from me. Rather, we spent an hour arguing over films.

Because everyone else was laughing, most people did too.
We became buddies really fast. Then, for some reason, without my knowledge, he started to become the first person I wanted to talk to every morning.
When I was anxious about tests, he paid attention.
When I became ill, he delivered soup to my residence.
He made me laugh too when he laughed, really laughed.
We began dating when I eventually fell in love with him.
Sadly, everyone else at school thought I was a joke as well.
I became enamoured with him.”Why are you in a relationship with him?”You are aware that you could find a typical boyfriend, correct? She must enjoy feeling tall.

The remarks were hurtful at first.
After then, they turned into background sounds.
I pretended that they did, at least. You’re dating him, but why?
Usually, Elliot was more adept at handling it than I was. He had more years of expertise acting as though harsh people didn’t exist.
Occasionally, though, I would notice a slight flicker in someone’s face when they believed they couldn’t hear them.
It was as if he was sick of trying to prove that he was worthy of respect.
Prom was really important to me because of this.
I desired one ideal evening for him.

Only one.
Prom was really important to me because of this.
My mother had assisted me in selecting my clothing for weeks. Elliot arrived at my place wearing a navy suit with a small blue rose pinned to the jacket.
At the door, my father shook his hand and remarked, “You look sharp tonight, son.”
Elliot grinned so broadly that his whole face glowed. He asked me anxiously, “Are you ready?”
He looked more attractive than I had ever seen him.I’m prepared.
I felt like crying as I stood in the gym and watched people make fun of us once more.

My mother had assisted me in selecting my clothing for weeks.
Under strings of lights, the decorations glistened. Couples danced together. Teachers pretended not to hear what the students were saying as they stood close to the barriers.
Then, from across the dance floor, a different female let out a loud cry.Take care not to lose him in the throng.
More chuckles.
I glanced at the ground.Elliot whispered, “Ignore them.””How?” I muttered.
Then he caught me off guard.
Teachers were positioned close to the walls.
He brought me directly onto the dance floor rather than toward the tables.

Straight into the middle.
Elliot put one hand tenderly at my waist as the song began to play slowly and softly.”Come dance with me,” he offered.
Elliot stared at me as if I were the only person in the room, even though people were still whispering and watching.
He took me directly into the dance floor.”They’re all jealous because you picked me,” he said.
Despite myself, I laughed. “Oh, really?”Of course. Take a look at me. Completely captured.
I rolled my eyes.
It seemed for a few minutes that we might make it through the night.

Then the music was interrupted by another voice.
Maybe we could make it through the night after all, it seemed.Perhaps she need to simply pick him up and dance with him like a kid.”
This time, the laughter was harsher and louder. Several students actually turned around to observe our response, as I witnessed.
My eyes immediately moistened, and for the first moment that evening, I also noticed a change in Elliot’s demeanour.
Humiliation, not rage.
I noticed a shift in Elliot’s facial expression.
I leaned in his direction. “Let’s simply leave. This was a poor decision.

He gave one nod.
Together, we turned to head for the exit when I felt a tap on my shoulder.
I turned to see our maths teacher, Mrs Parker.
Seldom did she speak up. Because she constantly exuded disappointment, she was the type of instructor who silenced her students.
However, she appeared enraged at the moment.
My shoulder was tapped by someone.Elliot,” she firmly stated. “You and Olivia need to come with me.”
As she led us to the stage, the room was filled with bewilderment.”What’s going on?” a nearby person whispered.
Mrs. Parker grabbed the microphone from the shocked student volunteer after ascending the little steps next to the DJ booth.

She then turned off the music.
She led the way to the stage.
The other pupils moaned and began to protest right away.”Everyone, please be silent immediately,” Mrs. Parker commanded. “I have something important to say about Elliot, and I need all of you to listen.”
The room calmed down gradually.
Elliot beside me was utterly perplexed.
First, Mrs. Parker turned to face him.”I apologise,” she said. “I should have done this much sooner.” She then turned back to the students. “For the last two years, many of you have mocked this young man every single day.”Everyone, please be silent immediately.

No one was laughing anymore. You made fun of his physique. He was handled as though he weren’t human. A few of you did it in public.
A few of you muttered behind his back. Her gaze swept over the throng. “And tonight, many of you decided to do it again.”
I observed a number of pupils shifting uneasily. Some completely avoided making eye contact.
Mrs Parker went on, “It seems that most of you are unaware that Elliot has been instructing struggling freshmen in maths three days a week after school for the past year.

I’m tired of seeing kindness remain silent while brutality receives attention, even though he never asked for praise.”
Mrs. Parker raised a tiny envelope.I’m tired of seeing cruelty receive publicity while kindness remains mute.”One senior is selected by the teachers each year to receive the Heart of the School Award, Mrs. Parker said.
A few pupils looked at each other in confusion. She grinned a little and said, “This award goes to the student who demonstrates exceptional character, compassion, and integrity.” “This year, the award goes to Elliot Carter.”
No one responded for a moment.
Elliot looked at her as if he truly believed she had said the wrong name.

A few pupils exchanged perplexed glances.”What?” he muttered.
Mrs. Parker gave the envelope to him. “You earned it.”
Abruptly, cheers erupted from someplace in the rear of the gym.
Near the wall, a number of freshmen got up and applauded. That’s Elliot.”He helped me pass algebra!”He spent weeks with me after school.
The room quickly erupted in cheers.
Mrs. Parker gave the envelope to him.
Even though not everyone joined in, it was enough to make the bullies’ quiet seem insignificant.
Elliot appeared utterly overpowered.I muttered, “You didn’t tell me this.”
Embarrassed, he blinked rapidly. “It wasn’t a big deal.”

He was heard by Mrs. Parker.”It was a huge deal,” she forcefully corrected. Then her face hardened once more. “And there’s one more thing.”
The gym instantly became quiet.Additionally, there is one extra item.Mrs. Parker looked across the room.
“The prom tonight was livestreamed for parents and family members who couldn’t attend.” “And unfortunately for some of you, the comments made toward Elliot tonight were clearly heard on that livestream.”
A number of pupils were clearly in a panic.
One of the loudest boys from earlier suddenly turned pale when I recognised him.

The school administration has already been contacted by parents, Mrs. Parker continued. “We will be addressing this behaviour formally next week.”
The room was hushed now.
A number of pupils were clearly in a panic.”You’re all going to grow up,” Mrs. Parker remarked. “And if this is how you treat someone for being different, then some of you have serious growing up to do.”
No one chuckled.
There were no whispers.
The room’s social equilibrium had radically changed.

The folks who had made fun of Elliot were ashamed rather than amused for the first time all evening.
Then an unforeseen event occurred. Some of you need to grow up.
The football team’s captain, Marcus, a senior who had laughed earlier, nervously moved forward.”I…” He took a deep breath. “I apologise, dude. I really do mean it. That was a mess.
Another pupil gave a nod.
Then one more.
All of a sudden, no one wanted to be connected to the brutality.

Elliot was given the microphone by Mrs. Parker.
No one desired to be connected to the brutality any more. You don’t need to say anything,” she softly informed him.
However, Elliot inhaled deeply before raising the microphone.”I used to believe that if I ignored people long enough, they would eventually stop,” he continued softly. But really? Sometimes people learn that what they’re doing is OK by acting as though nothing hurts.
My eyes began to well up with tears once more.
They weren’t from embarrassment, though, this time.
Elliot inhaled deeply before raising the microphone.Elliot went on, “I guess tonight I just want to say thank you.” “Not to those who made fun of me.

To those who didn’t. He looked over at me. “And particularly to Olivia. She has never made me feel like a person to be ashamed of.”
I grinned at him and grasped his hand.
Elliot took one final glance at the throng. “I’m exactly the same person I was before all of you heard this speech; the only difference is now you’re paying attention.”
Then he returned the microphone.
No one moved for 0.5 seconds.

Then there was an explosion of applause.
Elliot took one final glance at the throng.
Abruptly, I noticed that Elliot was also crying a little.
Mrs. Parker leaned in the direction of the DJ booth.”Play the music,” she commanded.
Once more, the slow song started.
She then gave Elliot and me a smile. “I believe these two were in the middle of a dance.”
Elliot turned to face me, and the crowd naturally separated. He said, “You still want to go?”These two were, I think, in the middle of a dance.

I surveyed the space.
at the pupils who won’t look us in the eye.
The freshman Elliot had tutored continued to cheer.
at those who were at last recognising Elliot’s true nature.
I then turned to face him again.”No,” I replied.
And no one laughed when we entered the dance floor together this time.

the individuals who were at last realising Elliot’s true nature.
