Family of Five Gets Into Highway Incident While Driving to Graduation Ceremony

On a Friday morning, a family loaded up their car and proceeded to a celebration. The relatives who were already waiting at the location were unaware that they would be spending the day looking for answers. On the drive, something had gone horribly wrong.

On May 22, 2026, Sergio Leon, 38, his wife Herminia Hernandez, 39, their twin 4-year-old daughters Nyah and Naomi Leon, and Sergio’s brother Antonio Leon, 36, departed Fresno, California, to attend a relative’s graduation ceremony in Arizona. None of them got there.

That morning, what were they driving toward?

Few things bring families together like graduations. Before anyone even arrives at the site, the group texts fill up, people drive in from hours away, and someone reserves the seats. The Leon family was in the middle of just that kind of morning on Friday.

At the graduation in Arizona, a relative had already arrived and was waiting for the rest of the family to come. The cousin recounted the exact moment the atmosphere changed, according to Fox26:

“Family members were beginning to show up. Sergio, Antonio, Naya, Naomi, and Mini never arrived as they were supposed to.”

Their chairs remained vacant and the calls went unanswered. However, the cause was already catastrophic elsewhere in the Mojave Desert.

The family waiting in Arizona was unaware that the five individuals they were expecting had been involved in one of the most severe highway collisions imaginable, in a vast expanse of desert with nothing nearby for miles.

Where Was the Deadly Turn on the Road?

In the isolated desert town of Freda, the California Highway Patrol was alerted to a collision on the eastbound side of State Route 62, close to Cadiz Road, at 8:20 a.m. that same day.

The region is located deep in the Mojave, some 40 miles west of the Arizona state border, just outside Joshua Tree National Park’s eastern boundary. The only things surrounding it are an open roadway and harsh, level terrain.

The county coroner identified the driver as 60-year-old Holly Chafey, who lost control of her car, drove off the road, returned to it, and crossed the double-yellow line straight into the path of the Leons. Both cars took fire as soon as they collided, and the CHP verified that the accident was a direct T-bone.

The four people inside the third car, which was also involved in the collision, escaped unharmed. Six of the 10 individuals involved were declared deceased at the spot. Holly and the entire Leon family died.

The names in the report belonged to which family?

Five of the six individuals slain that morning weren’t a group of strangers together by chance.

They were a cohesive group, bonded in the particular way that results from years of eating meals together, cracking inside jokes, and supporting one another without being asked. In the family’s GoFundMe memorial, the loved ones have taken care to make that obvious.

Sergio was known for his hard work and generosity; he was the kind of person who made ordinary time seem valuable. Every day, he poured that energy into his friends and family, finding value in the tiny, regular acts rather than the big ones.

eating together. making someone chuckle. transforming a typical Tuesday into something memorable.

Antonio, his two-year-younger brother, was the reliable one. devoted and present in a way that people only truly notice when it’s gone. His family relied on him without having to give an explanation. Those closest to him described his presence as bringing a calm strength that united people.

Herminia was renowned for the unique coziness she added to any space. She had “a special gift for making everyone feel welcomed, comforted, and cared for,” according to the family’s eulogy, which characterized her as a wife and a mother. The folks in her immediate vicinity sensed her unparalleled affection.

Then there were Naomi and Nyah. The twins, who were four years old and had just finished Pre-K, would graduate that same week.

The monument describes how their vitality and vibrant personalities permeated every area they entered and refers to them as being inseparable. Even though they had only begun their lives, those who knew them say it was impossible to ignore the imprint they left.

A long-standing football rivalry was another aspect of the family’s devotion for one another. Sergio and Antonio remained steadfast as supporters of the Las Vegas Raiders, while Herminia supported the San Francisco 49ers.

At family get-togethers, the back-and-forth over the game was a regular occurrence—the kind of modest, recurring custom that families maintain long after all else disappears. By all accounts, it was just a small part of a much bigger image of a family that truly loved spending time together.

How Do the People They Leave Behind Proceed?
Cesar Sanchez, a nephew and godson who works closely with the immediate family to guarantee complete openness over the usage of monies, launched the GoFundMe.

The public’s reaction has been amazing. With more than 500 individual contributions, the campaign had raised over $38,700 toward a $50,000 target as of the time of publication.

To help with expenses during this trying time, all earnings will be distributed equally among the impacted immediate family members. The family used the description to thank everyone who gave them a letter, donation, or prayer, stating that each one has given them “comfort and strength” during their time of grief.

On a Friday morning, a family headed into the desert to commemorate a happy occasion. It is presently being carried by those who are waiting for them on the other side of that drive.
