OCTOBER 2023 / FUNERALS OF GRANNIE ABELA
Carla and Maria were standing next to Grandmother Abela’s tomb when they heard the gentle rustle of the autumn foliage.
“Remember how wonderful it was to spend time at Grandma’s house when we were kids?” Maria muttered. “It’s been so long since we last saw her.”
“Yes,” Carla said in response. “I can’t believe how much time has passed.”
Despite their sorrowful expressions, it was obvious that they were more concerned with impressing one another than with lamenting their loss.
“Did you see my new car?” With pride in her voice, Maria murmured to Carla. “Fully electric, top of the queue.”
Carla forced a pleasant smile despite rolling her eyes a little.

Maria, that’s nice. I recently returned from a month-long vacation in Europe. travelled to Barcelona, Rome, and Paris. It was amazing.”
The tall man with a briefcase, the lawyer, approached them solemnly and cut off their chat.
He gestured for everyone to huddle together, even Gabriela, their childhood friend, who had been observing from a distance in silence.
The attorney opened by saying, “Thank you all for coming today.” “I have your grandma Abela’s will to read. She has left her home to Gabriela, who has taken care of her in her last years, according to it.”
Maria and Carla exchanged a startled look, obviously not anticipating this to happen.
The attorney went on, “As for you, Maria and Carla, your grandma has left you an old chest, which is at her house. She intended for it to be your parting gift.”
Maria raised her eyebrows. “A chest? What’s contained in it?”
The attorney shrugged. “I’m not sure. But the discovery is yours.”
Carla and Maria exchanged a glance. Gabriela, however, stood silently with a subtle, self-aware smile.
“Can you believe she got the house?” After the reading, Maria murmured to herself as they made their way to her car.

Carla grinned. “In any case, it’s probably going apart. We have the chest, and money or other valuables are sure to be within.”
After arriving at the car, they started to drive to Grandmother’s house. They kept talking about their accomplishments and their intentions with the bequest.
With her eyes shining, Maria remarked, “I bet there’s enough in there for me to upgrade my car even further.”
Carla grinned and said, “And maybe I’ll fund my next trip to Asia.”
Their chat distracted them so much that they failed to see anything or anybody around them, not even the silent, contemplative stare of Gabriela, who was sitting in the car with the key from her new home.
ideas of Gabriela’s other ideas were clouding the recent reading of the will.
It didn’t escape her attention how little had changed. Like children, Maria and Carla were still completely engrossed in their own worlds.
The vivid and poignant recollections returned with a rush.

August 1998 / Retrospective with Gabriela
Grandma’s house was a mix of competition and fun during the summers.
Maria brought her sketches in the hopes that Grandma would beam with joy. In an attempt to elicit the same response, Carla offered flowers she had picked from the garden.
“Grandma, look! I sketched this out for you.
Grandmother Abela would say, “That’s lovely, Maria,” and grin kindly.
Carla would soon follow up, not to be outdone, saying, “And I picked these flowers just for you, Grandma!”
“Carla, these are really lovely. Grandmother would reply, “Thank you,” ensuring that each girl felt just as valued.
Although Gabriela was constantly present, she never took part in their contests. Rather, she assisted Grandmother with housework, providing her with unwavering support without making a sound.
She assisted in the garden as well as sweep the floors and wash the dishes. A calm constant, Gabriela provided a reassuring backdrop to Maria and Carla’s animated exchanges.

In Grandmother’s home, Maria and Carla once discovered an antique chest. Its wood, browned with age, was tucked away in a corner.
“Grandma, what’s in this chest?” Maria enquired, her curious eyes widening.
Grandma Abela gave a soft grin. “I stashed money away for the two of you in that chest. I always have something new to add every time you come by. That will belong to you when you grow up.”
The prospect of their future treasure made the girls’ eyes gleam with delight.
Gabriela thought back to those experiences. At last, the automobile pulled up close to Granny Abela’s house. When Maria and Carla saw it, they both gasped.
OCTOBER 2023 / CHEST OPENING
The property was immaculately preserved, with a flower-filled lawn and a beautifully manicured facade.
Glancing around, Maria exclaimed, “Wow, I can’t believe how beautiful this place is.” “I thought it would be falling apart.”
“Yes,” Carla replied with a tinge of resentment. “Gabriela, how did you manage to keep it like this?”
Gabriela let out a sigh, feeling the bitterness underneath.
“I looked after Grandma while I was taking care of the house.” She took great pride in maintaining the house and her garden.”
Maria turned to Gabriela and scowled.
“But why did your grandmother give you the house? We’re not some neighbor’s child who grew up envious of us; we’re her true grandkids.”
Gabriela maintained a composed expression.

“Grandma valued my assistance and presence during the times you two were too preoccupied to spend together. But let’s enter now. The living room is where the chest is.
The sisters, still in awe at how immaculately preserved everything was, followed Gabriela inside. Their distrust and jealousy were visible to them. Gabriela guided them to the cornered chest, an ancient wooden box.
Maria moved on, ready to discover something worthwhile.
“It’s enough. It’s possible that Grandma left us something far more important in that chest. very likely a prize.”
Carla gave a nod. “Yeah, let’s open it.”
As Maria and Carla excitedly raised the lid, they discovered that the chest was… empty, which rapidly turned their excitement into bewilderment.
“Where’s the money?” Maria cried out, her voice getting louder with rage. “Carla, did you take it earlier?”

Carla’s surprised eyes grew wide. “Me? Not at all! It’s been a long time since I was here.
Both of them suddenly turned to face Gabriela.
“You took it, didn’t you?” Maria made a demand.
With a gentle smile, Gabriela shook her head.
“No, nothing was taken by me. Perhaps you ought to consider the reason why there is no more money.”
“What do you mean?” Carla enquired, her annoyance mounting.
Gabriela gave them a serene glance. “Do you remember when you last visited Grandma?”
Maria and Carla looked at one other nervously.
“It’s been a long time,” Maria acknowledged.
“Exactly,” responded Gabriela.
“When you stopped coming to see her, Grandma stopped stuffing money into the chest. Maria, do you recall the April 2016 educational grant that your grandmother gave you?”
2016 April / MARIA’S RETROSPECTIVE

Maria had a vivid memory of that day. She had recently returned from college, and it was a beautiful April afternoon. With pride in her eyes, Grandma Abela had invited her into the comfortable living room.
Grandma said, “Maria, I have something for you,” and gave her an envelope.
When Maria opened it and saw the money inside, her eyes widened. “Grandma, this is a lot of money!”
“Maria, this is for your schooling. I hope you’re successful. Spend it on books, courses, or whatever else you need to succeed.”
Maria felt a wave of gratitude as she gave her grandmother a firm hug. “Grandma, I’m grateful. I swear I’ll do you proud.”
However, Maria’s thoughts strayed as the days went by. For months she had been coveting a sleek new automobile. She was tempted more and more until she gave in to it.
Convincing herself that she deserved the car for all her hard work, she utilised the money to purchase it.
By spending the money on her wants rather than her studies, she had breached her grandmother’s trust.

Maria blushed scarlet with embarrassment as the recollection returned.
“I bought a car with it,” she admitted.
With a nod, Gabriela turned to face Carla.
“And you, Carla. Do you still recall the January 2017 therapy money that Grandma gave you?”
2017 January / Carla’s Flashback
Carla had dropped by for a visit on this chilly January afternoon. Sitting at the kitchen table, she pretended to seem tired.
Carla said, “Grandma, I need to talk to you about something important,” a little shaking in her voice for effect. “I’ve been diagnosed with a health condition and need money for my treatment.”
Grandma Abela’s expression turned worried at once. Oh Carla, how poor my sweetheart is! Which kind of care are you in need of?”
Carla swallowed her pride and carried on with the act. It’s rather pricey, Grandma. I’m not sure how I’ll manage to pay for it.”

Grandma Abela reached inside her chest without hesitation and took out an envelope containing cash.
“This is for you to take,” she added, placing it in Carla’s hands. Apply it to your medical care. The most essential thing is your health.”
“Grandma, I’m grateful. I swear I’ll make good use of it.”
Actually, Carla had taken the money and paid for an opulent trip to Europe, living the high life and leaving her grandmother in the dark.
Guilt clouded Carla’s gaze. Gabriela went on:
“Grandma was upset because you didn’t come see her again after that. She felt abandoned, so she quit stuffing money into the chest. I was the one who looked after her when she was ill. I paid for her medical care and groceries with my own money.”
Maria and Carla experienced a crest of embarrassment. They came to see how self-centred they had been to have ignored their grandma in favour of their goals.

When they weren’t around, Gabriela had been the one to remain at Grandmother’s side and take care of her.
Gabriela whispered, “Now you know why Grandma gave me the house as a reward.” “Money was not the main concern. It had to do with presence and love.”
The sisters stood silently, taking time to consider Gabriela’s remarks. They had overlooked what really mattered because they had been so preoccupied with themselves.
2023 October / The Crucial
In the living room, Gabriela stood with a small silver key in her hand.
She said, “This is the key to Grandma’s house.” “I don’t need it, but Grandma left it to me. I have all I require in this life.”

Do you not desire the house? Carla questioned in a disbelieving tone.
“Not at all. I want it for the two of you. However, there’s a catch. If you both reside here and take care of the house together, you can inherit it after a year. Grandma would have approved of that.”
“All right,” Maria replied. “We’ll do it.”
“Yes, we will,” Carla replied.

Gabriela grinned as a wave of relief passed through her. Having seen Grandmother through to the end and now giving her grandchildren the inheritance, she knew she had made the correct decision.
