My DIL Crashed My Car and Refused to Pay—But Karma Delivered the Perfect Payback!
My DIL Crashed My Car after Taking It without Permission – She Refused to Pay for Repairs, but Karma Stepped In
Sandra believed the worst was over when her daughter-in-law smashed her car in the middle of the night. Subsequently, an unexpected phone call exposed a deeper betrayal. What started out as a frustrating morning soon turned into a revelation that would permanently alter her family’s future.

I had no idea how my day would begin. I’m 57 years old, a widow, and I reside in a peaceful area. Last year, my 28-year-old son Derek and his spouse Lindsay moved in with me. It was only meant to be a stopgap until they were able to find somewhere to call home.
However, here we are, continuing to live under one roof. Derek has always been a good boy. He strives to maintain harmony, works hard at his job, and looks out for his family. However, Lindsay is a completely different story. We’ve never really agreed on anything.
Derek was gone on business travels two days earlier, so Lindsay and I were on our own. She wasn’t overly excited about it, either, as I could see. We constantly feel like we’re treading carefully around each other. I kept to my routine, avoided her as much as possible, and let her go about her own business.
There was a loud thud outside when I woke up this morning. A beat skipped in my heart. I hurried out the front door after throwing on my robe. My car, my poor old car, with its damaged headlights and crumpled bumper was parked in the driveway. Beside it, the source of the thud could be found: a broken wing mirror on the driveway.
“What in the world?” I hurried over to it after gasping. The moment I touched the creased metal, my palms shook. How did this come about? When I checked on it last night, everything seemed OK. Who was capable of this?
I heard the front door creak open behind me at that same moment. I looked over and saw Lindsay drinking her coffee idly, as if nothing were wrong.
“Oh, good morning,” she responded, maintaining her neutral tone.

“First thing in the morning? Lindsay, take a look at my automobile! It’s completely destroyed!” It surprised me how at ease she was.
Her eyes flicked to the car and then back to me. “Yeah, I noticed that.”
“Have you noticed? You say you noticed, but what? Are you aware of what transpired?
Lindsay shook her head and took another gulp of her coffee. “Yesternight, I pulled it out. Brakes weren’t working properly. Most likely the reason it was damaged.
“You took my car?” My blood pressure started to rise. “Without asking me?”
Okay, so you weren’t utilizing it. And I needed to be somewhere,” she answered, totally unperturbed.
“Where should I go? That time of day? For what reason would you need to go somewhere in the middle of the night?”
With narrowed eyes, she shot back, “That’s none of your business.” “And don’t even start talking about money with me. Your old car is falling apart, but that doesn’t mean I have to pay for it.”
I tried not to lose my cool as I looked at her, but I could feel my rage building. “You can’t just take someone’s car, Lindsay, without their consent. That isn’t the way it operates.

She was obviously not interested in listening to me when she rolled her eyes. “Oh, kindly. Give up on making a big deal out of things. It’s only a vehicle. I also mentioned that I won’t be paying for it. It is a problem with your car.
“My problem?” I said it again, nervously. “You broke it! It should be your responsibility to fix it.”
Lindsay’s look became more rebellious as she crossed her arms. “Not taking place. I’m not going to spend my money on that piece of garbage.
I wanted to shout at her for being so disrespectful at that very time. However, I recalled Derek saying, “Don’t argue with her, Mom,” before he went. It’s not worthwhile. I’ll take care of everything when I return.”
In an attempt to relax, I inhaled deeply. “Lindsay, you must see that what you did was incorrect. You cannot simply —”
My phone rang before I had a chance to continue. Derek’s name appeared on the screen as I reached into my pocket. I felt a wave of relief. Perhaps he could reason with her.
“Hello, Derek?” I responded, attempting to maintain a steady tone.
“Mum, what’s happening? Lindsay recently texted me to complain that you’re treating her badly.
“Derek, she crashed my car after taking it without asking.” She is now refusing to cover the cost of the repairs.” I exploded, my annoyance showing through.
Derek said, “Mom, please calm down,” sounding weary. “Look, I promise to take care of it when I return. Simply said, don’t argue with her. Please.
“But Derek, she —”
“Mom, I understand. Yes, I am aware. But for now, just let it pass. I will handle it.
I let out a sigh of defeat. “All right, Derek. However, action must be taken.”

“Mom, I swear. Keep going.”
My pulse raced as the call came to an end. What did she have hidden? Ideas flew through my head, none of them good. She was obviously involved in something behind Derek’s back, whatever it was. Furthermore, she wasn’t being truthful with me.
I felt compelled to act, but I didn’t want to make snap judgments. I required evidence. Even though it hurt, I made the decision to hold off and see whether she would make another mistake. I didn’t have enough information to accuse her.
My perseverance paid off sooner than I thought. Lindsay left the house that evening, claiming to be heading to “meet a friend.” For a moment, I didn’t believe her. I took my phone and gave Derek another call as soon as she left.
I blurted, “Derek, something’s wrong,” as soon as he answered. Lindsay has been behaving erratically. It sounded bad when I heard her on the phone earlier.”

“What do you mean, suspicious?” Derek enquired, becoming worried.
“It seemed like she was keeping something from us, but I’m not sure. She left right after, claiming to be meeting a friend. I don’t trust her, Derek.”
Derek let out a deep sigh from the other end. “I’m at a loss for words, Mom. She’s been giving me strange vibes as well, but I wasn’t ready to assume the worst. “Do you believe she’s…”
Though I realized what he was getting at, I didn’t want to continue the notion. “Derek, I’m not sure. But something doesn’t seem right, and I believe we should investigate.”

In an attempt to appear reasonable, Derek responded, “Okay, let’s not jump to conclusions just yet.” “However, keep a watch on things. I’ll return late tomorrow. Then, we’ll discuss more.
“All right, Derek. I’ll exercise caution.
I couldn’t get the bad feeling in my chest to go away when we hung up. I paced the house for the remainder of the evening, hoping Lindsay would come home. It was late when she did, and she appeared surprised to see me waiting in the living room.
Trying to sound casual, she said, “You’re still up?”
I said, keeping a close eye on her, “I couldn’t sleep,” “How was your evening?”
She glanced away from me and hurriedly responded, “It was fine.” “Just caught up with a friend.”
“Which friend?” Without letting up, I asked.

Lindsay paused, and I realized she was telling a lie. “Just… a friend from work.”
I sensed I was onto something, but I didn’t push her further. She ran to her room, obviously uncomfortable with my prying eyes. The air was still thick with tension, as far as I could tell.
Derek called me again the following day, sounding more urgent. “Mom, there is something I need you to do.” My colleague at work just gave me a call. He informed me that an unusual incident occurred last night. He was scheduled to see a female from a dating site, but she abruptly canceled, claiming to have been in an accident.”
A beat skipped in my heart. “Derek, what are you saying?”
“He said the girl sounded like Lindsay, Mom. Although he didn’t know it was her, I’m very certain based on what he said. She has been secretly observing me.”

My heart felt icy. The late-night excursions, the cryptic phone conversations, the vehicle mishap—everything fell into place. It was a component of something far larger than a mere accident.
“Derek, what do we do?” My voice trembled as I asked.
“Mom, please gather her belongings and carry them outside. She needs to leave the house by the time I return tonight. I’m over her falsehoods.”
My heart hurt for Derek, even though I knew it was the proper thing to do. This was not a betrayal he deserved. I was thinking about how quickly things had gotten out of hand as I began packing Lindsay’s items. It was time to put an end to this horror and shield my son from further suffering.
Lindsay entered the room, her eyes wide with amazement at what I was doing, and the door creaked. Resolutely, I stood, prepared for whatever came next.

She asked, “What are you doing?”
“Making you feel uncomfortable. I crossed my arms over my chest and said, “Your lies are over.
“This will cost you money,” snarled Lindsay. “I’ll call Derek right now!”
Lindsay walked out of the call after Derek, I’m not sure what he said. I had mixed emotions of relief and regret. When Derek got home, he decided to file for divorce following a quick but unpleasant talk. Though he knew it was the right decision, it wasn’t an easy one. There was no going back; the treachery was too great.
