I Offered a Fortune for the Most Surprising Date — And Men Began Lining Up at My Door!

I Promised a Fortune for the Date That Could Surprise Me, and Men Lined up at My Door — Story of the Day

I am the type of woman who attracts a lot of interest from men. However, the man I desired it from the most appeared indifferent. Brielle is hovering about him, resembling a bee around honey. Thus, I pledged my grandmother’s inheritance for an unexpected date. Before long, there was a big queue of men outside my door.

I used to say, “My name’s Odette,” and I had a smile that could halt traffic.

I was well-known to all. Guys virtually stumbled over each other to catch my eye. I was noticed by all.

All except Monroe, that is.

My mysterious neighbor Monroe was not like the others. While others were gregarious and enthusiastic, he was cool, collected, and even enigmatic.

“Morning, Monroe!”

I yelled out to him every morning, thinking that today would be the one where he would finally stop and talk. But all I ever received was a quick smile or a nod.

“Why do you even bother?” Brielle gave a smirk. She made it her life’s work to outshine me and resided two homes down.

“He’s not interested.”

I would shrug and act as though her remarks didn’t hurt. “Maybe he just likes a challenge.”

However, Brielle had a knack of making me feel uncomfortable. She was constantly vying with me for the greatest things—best parties, best gardens, and, of course, best ways to get Monroe to notice you.

She was laughing with Monroe in her garden one day as I was pruning my flowers.

Brielle said, her voice full of seduction, “Monroe, you just have to come over for dinner sometime.”

With her laughter resonating like a triumphant bell, she leaned in and delicately touched his arm.

I clamped down harder on the shears.

“Enjoying yourself?” I tried to seem casual as I called over, but the sight made my blood boil.

“Oh, I didn’t notice you there, Odette. Just chatting briefly with Monroe.” Brielle turned to look back, a sly smile spreading across her lips.

Monroe gave a courteous nod, his cool head as frustrating as ever. It was getting too much for me.

“A severe measure. As soon as they were out of sight, I whispered to myself, “I need to do something drastic.”

I sat at my desk and tapped a pen against my chin that evening. My mind kept going back to Monroe and how, in spite of everything I tried, he had hardly acknowledged me.

I had an idea! It was audacious, even a little crazy, but just what I needed.

I scrawled a note:

Seeking a date who is capable of surprising me. My grandmother’s inheritance goes to the finest candidate.”

I smiled slyly as I got ready to submit the note to the local press, thinking of how our little town would be abuzz with curiosity in just a few days.

I had the following idea as I was closing the envelope:

Monroe would notice today, but who would? What’s more, who would be the front-runner for his affections?

At last, Brielle would discover who was really in charge. Start the games now.

I was shocked to see a lengthy line of men, all vying for my favor, stretching down the street the following morning. As more and more eager suitors drew nearer to my front door, I stood there blinking in shock.

The first man approached me and got down on one knee. He was a tall man in his late 40s holding a rose.

He started off dramatically, saying, “Odette, I have written a poem, just for you.”

He began an excruciatingly long speech about fate, love, and the stars coming together specifically for us. Though his tone faltered with passion, I could not help but roll my eyes.

“That was… lovely.”

The next suitor came up, a juggler with three colourful balls.

He said, “Watch this, Odette!” as the balls shot through the air. He added some clever spins and a halfhearted attempt at one-footed juggling.

I laughed when he finally lost his balance and the balls fell to the ground.

“Impressive.”

My voice wasn’t exactly in tune with the word. The poor guy merely shrugged and moved aside with an embarrassed smile.

A really young gentleman who had given his act some thought was next in line. He brought in a little table, set a deck of cards on it, and started to carefully shuffle them.

He said, “Odette, get ready to be amazed,” and proceeded to perform a number of card tricks.

He could make cards appear, vanish, and even guess which card I had chosen at random from the deck. His tricks were more interesting than the others, I had to admit.

“Well done,” I clapped a little.

Satisfied with his effort, he tipped his hat and continued.

I noticed that I was beginning to get carried away by the excitement of it all. This insane journey was enjoyable in a way.

I made the decision to settle in. I took a chair and placed it in the backyard so I could see the spectacle well. Then, I relaxed and took in the show.

A couple more folks arrived, each contributing their distinct abilities—or lack thereof.

One attempted to play me a song on the guitar, but he was unable to hit most of the notes. Another tried a coin magic trick, but instead of the coin disappearing, it ended up rolling down the sidewalk. And still another, grinning nervously, handed me a box of chocolates.

However, a man with a really risky notion soon emerged.

His words were, “Watch this, Odette,” as he produced a pair of fire torches.

He lighted them and made a dizzying exhibition of juggling the burning sticks, which caused my eyes to widen in panic. Everyone in the vicinity gasped.

Abruptly, one of the torches escaped his hold and fell uncomfortably near. I felt a wave of panic as the flames lapped at the parched grass close to my fence.

“Somebody call 911!” While the man frantically tried to put out the flames, I yelled.

In a matter of minutes, the air was filled with the sound of sirens as the fire truck and ambulance pulled up. I needed a breather while the paramedics fussed over that mess. I chose to go for a quick stroll.

I could then determine the number of suitors who were still awaiting their turn and determine whether Monroe was one of them.

I said to no one in particular, “I’ll be right back,” and headed toward Monroe’s yard.

Monroe had been sitting idly against his fence in his yard, taking in the scene. He looked directly at me and yelled,

Odette, it appears that you’ve transformed your home into a theme park! Must I purchase a ticket?”

His playful taunt made me flush, but before I could respond, I spotted something strange occurring in my yard. The men were assembling, raising their voices with excitement.

I turned and ran back, wanting to see what was happening, without saying another word.

The once enthusiastic candidates for my hand in marriage now surrounded me in a close circle, their once-friendly faces gone.

One of the men moved forward, a towering man with a menacing smile. “We know there’s no inheritance, Odette.”

“You’ve been tricking us the entire time. It’s your moment to perform now!”

I attempted to object and clarify that everything was a joke, but the men showed little interest in listening to me. They desired retribution.

“Come on, Odette!” Another enraged man yelled, mockingly in his voice.

“Let’s see those tricks and dances you made us do!”

“I… I didn’t mean…” I stumbled, but their mocking overpowered my words.

They surrounded me, their demands becoming more insistent and louder. “Odette, dance for us! Perform a song for us!”

I felt something cold and gooey spill over my head.

“Ugh, what a disgusting mess!”

The syrup stuck to my hair and clothes and flowed down my face, causing me to gasp. A bag of feathers was thrown into the air and fell on me, clinging to the syrup before I could even blink.

The audience let out sharp giggles, and I could hear them laughing at me.

“Now that’s the show we all deserve!”

I felt ashamed as I stood there. I was the joke of the neighborhood after my disastrous attempt to get Monroe’s attention failed.

I blinked away the tears that stung at the corners of my eyes.

I saw Brielle suddenly in the back of the throng. With victory in her eyes, she was grinning.

“Did you really believe that your little inheritance scam would deceive everyone? Odette, it appears that you have some cleaning up to do. I wish you success on that.”

It was all too much—the shame, the jokes, the laughing! Desperate to get away from this nightmare I’d made for myself, I ran out of the yard.

The sticky muck stuck to me with every step, making it difficult for me to walk, and the street appeared to go on forever.

I continued till the dwellings were less in number and the surrounding woods’ trees encircled me. That’s when I broke down in tears and went to my knees.

Why had everything gone so wrong?

In order to demonstrate Brielle that she wasn’t the queen of everything, I had sought to get Monroe’s attention. Rather, though, I had embarrassed myself.

A twig snapping behind me startled me out of my sadness. I felt a rush of panic and spun around, prepared to fight off whoever had followed me.

However, a powerful hand deftly grabbed my arm before I could strike out.

Monroe gently murmured, “Odette, it’s me,” his voice a comforting salve to my wounded nerves. “You’re safe.”

With his jacket off, Monroe placed it around my quivering shoulders, soothing me with his aroma and warmth.

“Come on, let’s get you out of here.”

Monroe allowed me to use his bathroom to freshen up when we got to his place. The proof of my shame swirled down the drain as I stood under the warm water, feeling better. I washed away the sticky syrup and feathers.

By the time I got outside, I felt like my breathing had returned.

Monroe had made a simple dinner, and we chatted casually as we sat at his tiny kitchen table, talking as though we had known one other for ages.

Monro said, “I’ve always noticed you, Odette.” “With all those admirers around, I was never sure if you were available.” However, it appears that you handled things on your own now.”

I burst out laughing, genuinely laughing from the bottom of my heart.

As I sat there with Monroe, I came to the realization that sometimes the most unexpected endings lead to the best beginnings.
