Shocking Late-Night Visitor: Elderly Woman with Broken Leg Uncovers Son-in-Law’s Secret

At seventy years old, Agnes narrowly survives a suicide attempt, though she suffers a severely injured leg in the process. One night, as she lies motionless in her bed, recovering from the ordeal, she becomes aware of a shadowy figure entering her room. Her heart races as she realizes it’s her son-in-law, slowly creeping toward her bedside.

At seventy, Agnes was jolted from her thoughts by a faint rustling noise in the stillness of the night, prompting her to stay alert. Peeking out from beneath her blanket, her eyes caught sight of her son-in-law, Chris, rummaging through her nightstand with an unsettling air.

Agnes’s brow began to bead with sweat. She had been anticipating this day. She flicked her wrist to switch on the light.

We’ve got you, cunning scoundrel! You’ve finally been exposed by your insatiable greed…It’s time to give up your freedom to the police and say goodbye to my daughter.”

“A-Agnes??” Chris stumbled. His expression took on a mixture of surprise and irritation. “I thought you were…DEAD.”

A couple months prior to now…

Agnes went into the Silver Grande Cafe with her 45-year-old daughter Grace, who had been dating Chris for six months.

Good day, Mrs. Xavier. I’m glad to have met you. Chris got up to shake hands.

Agnes never imagined Chris would be so charming, even if Grace had informed her that he was thirteen years her junior. And somehow, he was familiar. As soon as the three of them sat down, Agnes began giving him the lowdown.

“I know who you are. Have we previously crossed paths?” Agnes queried.

“I don’t…think so.” Chris gave Agnes a level stare.

“Oh, Mom! You must be confused,” Grace said, sliding a plate of lobster toward Agnes. “The temperature’s falling—let’s eat and warm up.”

Dinner proceeded with all the expected awkwardness and aggravation on Agnes’s part. Grace would answer her every time she asked Chris a question. Agnes was shocked to see Grace pull out her wallet and pay for the bill.

“So your beloved lady pays for your dinner, young man?” Agnes questioned Chris.

“Chris has a sizable bequest from his grandfather, but he can’t use it until the legal formalities are resolved. I promise he’ll have plenty of money to take care of me by then.” Grace exclaimed, rushing to Chris’s support one more time.

Chris got up from his chair, flapping his blazer, and gave Grace a hug. “Darling, thanks for the dinner. I’m running late for a presentation I have to give to a significant Japanese client.”

Grace chastised her mother for being so impolite to Chris after he left the restaurant.

“Grace, I’m not sure how to make things seem nice. I’m only aware of asking face-to-face. Since I’m entitled to the truth. Now let’s get home.” Agnes stood up.

Saying that she had to meet a friend at the theater, Grace called a cab for her mother. Grace gazed vacantly out the taxi window while the driver manoeuvred through traffic. Agnes saw Chris, carrying a bag, walk into a costume rental store as the taxi was about to cross a lane.

“Stop the car, driver!” The cab driver followed Agnes’s instructions, and the taxi stopped on the side of the road.

Agnes lowered the window and squinted—it wasn’t her imagination; that was Chris! He looked disheveled as he exited the store minutes later. The sharp blue suit he had worn at dinner was gone, replaced by ragged pants, a faded hoodie, and shoes that were clearly falling apart. This was far from what one would expect for an important business meeting!

Agnes could only surmise that he had misled both Grace and her. She motioned to the taxi driver to follow him, but a few moments later Chris pulled into an alleyway too narrow for the car. She went on foot after Chris. Agnes quickly discovered she was in a seedy area known for illicit activity.

She was stunned to witness Chris slip into a run-down house. Careful not to be seen, she crouched closer, peering through a cracked window.

Her breath caught when her eyes landed on a photograph of herself, wearing the priceless $400,000 diamond necklace that had been a family heirloom for generations.

Agnes was startled like a thunderbolt by some terrible recollections that flashed back as she wondered where Chris had taken the picture.

Agnes said, “That’s why Chris seemed so familiar.”

A man named Larry, who bore a striking resemblance to Chris, had attempted to pilfer the jewelry fifteen years prior. He said that Agnes’s ancestors had stolen an heirloom from his family. After a protracted court battle, Larry was finally imprisoned and later perished in a fire.

Agnes recalled spotting the younger brother of Larry in the courtroom. She quickly concluded that the young man was Chris and that he had probably approached Grace in order to get revenge for his brother’s untimely death.

But without evidence, Grace would never believe her. Agnes pointed the camera on her phone at Chris’s living room, her fingers shaking. While attempting to take a snapshot of him gazing at the jewelry photo, she unintentionally used the flash.

Chris whirled to look out the window. Agnes ran away. She crouched behind a trash can and watched Chris appear on the doorstep. He glanced up and down the road before returning inside. Agnes let out a relieved sigh. She ran out of the alley, her heart beating, and called a cab to take her home.

Agnes raced to her daughter’s apartment the next morning to protect her and the family relic from Chris.

“Darling, I need to tell you something…it’s about Chris…last night I saw him going to this…”

When she noticed Chris and Grace seated on the couch, she became quiet. He raised his head and grinned at Agnes.

“Mom, is everything okay?” Grace queried.

“Grace, we must discuss. Chris, you too need to hear this. Agnes took a seat and began to tell Chris the whole story of what had transpired fifteen years prior.

“Mrs. Xavier, you’re mistaken.” Chris gave a headshake. “I didn’t know my brother was involved with anything involving your family necklace. Even I’m surprised. I swear I was present at the meeting. Not down a back alley. Besides, why would I organize this if my goal was to rob Grace?”

Chris took out a tiny velvet box from his pocket. Agnes was shocked to see Chris get down on one knee and ask Grace to marry him.

“But I have proof!” Agnes pulled out her phone and displayed the picture she had taken. Chris’s face was visible, but a ball of light from the flash reflecting off the window obscured the picture of her and the necklace.

Grace was purely focused on Chris. He put the ring on her finger and planted a kiss on her, making her forget all Agnes had just told her.

Agnes was surprised at how quickly the proposal was made. Because of the phone’s brightness, she assumed Chris knew she’d been spying and had planned the proposal to draw Grace’s attention away. Agnes made the decision to act before Chris did, determined to foil his scheme.

She cut the pair off, saying, “In that case, let’s do one thing.” “Give me the family necklace, sweetheart, and there won’t be any more drama!”

Grace scowled. “Remember that you gave me the necklace and that it is safe? Why do you want it back at this time? I would like to wear it to the nuptials.”

“Grace, it’s still mine even though I lent it to you. Don’t wear this necklace to your wedding; wear something else. Give it back right now.”

Chris was shocked to see Grace take the jewelry from a secret vault in the fireplace. His expression twisted in subdued annoyance.

“Here, take your necklace.” Agnes was given the case by Grace, who pushed it fiercely. “I don’t want it.”

“I’m thrilled for the two of you. Many congratulations!” With an angry reply, Agnes threw the jewel case inside her purse. Then she went up to Chris and said in a whisper:

“As long as you don’t flee, Chris, we’ll keep playing your evil game! This necklace will never come into contact with unclean hands.”

After Agnes got the necklace, she thought Chris would be gone, but two weeks later, he and Grace got married in a gorgeous resort overlooking the glittering sea.

Agnes was surprised that Chris had gone to this extent with his act. She was on high alert because she had no idea what his next move would be. Thirty meters above the breaking waves, on the restaurant’s balcony, she walked outdoors to catch her breath.

Suddenly, behind her, Chris spoke.

“You know, Mrs. Xavier, you were right about the necklace!” Chris walked up to Agnes and gave her a menacing look. It is rightfully mine to keep. I’ll exert all necessary effort to get it.”

Agnes realized they were alone when she craned her neck to peer behind Chris. The music in the party hall was too loud for anyone to hear her cry for aid, even if she did. She was…ensnared.

“What are you doing?!” Agnes took a step back. “Avoid getting any closer. Stay at that exact spot.”

Chris scoffed, “You shouldn’t have interfered in my affairs.” “Up until you followed me home, everything was going as planned. Did you really think I missed that flash by the window? You stand in the way of my progress. Why don’t you just do that?” He threw himself at her.

“Chris, give up! Please say no… Agnes yelled with terror.

However, it was already too late. Chris shoved her after grabbing her shoulders. Agnes reached for the railing, but her hands couldn’t find anything. She fell in the direction of the sea.

The following day…

Agnes’s eyes opened slightly. She craned her neck to see her leg in a heavy cast, and everything hurt. In a hospital bed, she lay.

“Mom, you’re awake!” With teary eyes, Grace ran over to her. “It’s a miracle you survived that fall with minimal injuries.”

Agnes remarked, “Chris pushed me, Grace.”

Grace’s face changed from one of relief to one of rage. She stormed out of Agnes’s room in a rage because she didn’t trust her. Agnes was deeply troubled by Grace’s unyielding denial.

Agnes was then overcome with a terrible realization: Chris had the ideal chance to take the necklace and make a permanent getaway.

When she called the nurse to request her discharge, the nurse turned her down. Agnes came up with a plan of escape as soon as she left the ward. She got out of bed with a limp, got dressed, and pushed herself into a wheelchair. Wheeling onto the elevator, she went down the hall.

As she fled the hospital and got closer to a taxi stop, a wave of panic and adrenaline swept over her. Agnes discovered the necklace undamaged when she opened the safe at home. She turned out all the lights and crawled into bed, relieved that Chris had not yet broken into her home. Chris came for the necklace as she had anticipated.

Returning to the here and now…

“You survived that fall?” Chris grimaced and gave his knuckles a crack. “Guess I’ll have to get my hands dirty and send you off on my own!”

The bedroom door blew open as he was moving closer to her. Chris was apprehended by a group of police officers who surrounded him. When Grace learned of the news, she hurried to her mother’s side and expressed regret for not believing her.

Agnes exclaimed, “The truth always finds its way out!”

As they were ready to head to the hospital to resume Agnes’s therapy, Agnes gave Grace a hug.
