Breakup Surprise: I Won a Vacation for Two and Need a Fake Boyfriend to Join Me

Only a few days before splitting up with her boyfriend, Zoe won a couples trip. She feels confused now that she is sitting by herself at the airport without a travel companion. However, a startling opportunity arises and Zoe’s voyage takes a different direction when a stranger takes a seat next to her.

Staring at the two tickets I was holding, I sat at the airport. This was supposed to be a couple’s vacation, but I was alone. Two days before Ryan and I broke up, I had won the trip.

I had no idea why I had even arrived, but here I was. I no longer had that someone, and the whole purpose of the vacation was to travel with someone wonderful. I sighed, feeling disoriented and inappropriate.

People were laughing and chatting with their friends all around me, but I was trapped in this weird circumstance. Why did I turn up? What was going through my mind? I was at a loss as to what to do next, and nothing made sense.

One of the men seated behind me remarked, “You look too sad for someone who is about to go on vacation.” He appeared to be about my age.

“You don’t seem all that cheerful yourself,” I shot back, trying to avoid meeting their gaze. Honestly, I wasn’t in the mood to chat with someone I didn’t know.

They hired someone else, but I was scheduled to travel for a job interview. He seemed dejected as he continued, “I lost my last opportunity at the job.

Well, that’s difficult. That saddens me to hear,” I remarked. After a little pause, I had an idea. “Hey, would you want to accompany me?”

“With you?” he enquired, appearing taken aback.

“Yes, it’s true. This trip for two is meant for couples, but I won it. And there’s also a cash prize at the end,” I explained.

“A cash prize? This isn’t some kind of reality show, is it?”

“No, it’s not at all. It’s just an ordinary excursion, except you must go with a partner.

He turned to face me, perplexed. “Why did you enter if you are single?”

As I entered the room, I found I wasn’t by myself. I shrugged and said, “I was dating someone, but we’ve since split up. How about this: for a week, you could be my faux boyfriend. What do you think?”

After blinking a few of times, he smiled. “Why not? Right now, a free trip seems quite fantastic.

Feeling relieved, I grinned. However, there remained a matter I had not disclosed to him, and I was uncertain about his response upon learning about it. But for now, we just had to make it there.

Tom

Maybe luck was finally on my side. Just five minutes ago, I was a penniless person sitting at the airport, feeling utterly despondent. Now, I had the chance to take a wonderful woman on a vacation and even win some money.

It was astounding to me how fast things had changed. A weird thought occurred to me as I continued to think about it. Did I really just consent to an escort arrangement? A beat skipped in my heart.

She smiled slightly and held out her hand, saying, “By the way, my name is Zoe.”

“Tom,” I shook her hand in return. After pausing for a while, I said, “I must ask… I mean, I didn’t just consent to be an escort?

Zoe’s eyes got bigger. How come? Not at all! Naturally, no. Do I appear to be the type of person that does that? She seems somewhat agitated.

I said, “Not really,” and without thinking, I added, “But you are pretty hot.” Her face flushed, as I saw.

The boarding announcement came and we boarded the aircraft before things could get any more unpleasant. As soon as we took our seats, Zoe took out a book and began to read.

“Don’t we need to understand one another better?” After a while, I inquired. “Remember that we’re supposed to behave like a couple?”

After glancing at me, Zoe shrugged. She remarked, “We’ll have time for that.”

Our short flight ended with a quick landing. We were picked up by a car as soon as we went outside and driven directly to the hotel. I was astounded to see so many people and cameras when we arrived.

“This wasn’t a reality show, you said?” I questioned, sensing that I had been duped.

“It’s not,” Zoe remarked coolly. “That’s for a channel on YouTube.”

How come? We’re being filmed, then?

Yes, but unwind first. After completing a few duties, we may relax and enjoy our holiday.

“This is not what I agreed to!” I objected.

“Alright, you’re here at last,” grinned Zoe. “Plus, we get the money if we win.”

What happens if we don’t? I enquired.

She said, “At least you’ll have a free vacation,” as she entered the hotel.

Zoe

It was not as hard as I had imagined to game the system. Having shared all the pertinent information about our life, Tom and I were able to respond to the questions as a genuine pair.

As a rather competent squad, we even won the competitions. But every falsehood made a knot in my stomach tighten. I was beginning to feel the weight of my lies, which I had never done before.

I ignored the guilt as it started to surface. Up until the kayak race, what mattered was that we were performing well.

Panic hit when I spotted the kayaks. I said to Tom in a whisper, “I can’t do this.” “I am not a good swimmer.”

Tom’s expression hardened, and I knew this was going to end badly.

“I refuse to enter that kayak!” Shouting, I took a step back.

“You are, indeed!” Tom bellowed, surpassing my previous level of hearing.

“Not at all! We’ll fall and drown. I objected as I felt my own terror increase.

“Zoe, get into that kayak right away!” Tom lost his temper. “I require this money.” I’ll tie you to it if you don’t go in. I could see the desperation in his eyes and the tension on his face.

I became motionless. It worried me since I had never seen dad so furious. This part of him surprised me.

With reluctance, I accepted Tom’s hand and climbed into the kayak. My heart raced, but there was no going back from this point on. Tom used the paddle with surprising skill and knowledge.

We got going quickly and sliced through the water. Despite our won, he continued yelling at me, telling me to paddle harder. Keep going!—his tone remained piercing and harsh throughout.

I reached my breaking point at the finish line of the race. I ran back to our hotel as soon as we crossed the finish line, my eyes hurting from the crying.

Tom followed me inside the room and took a seat on the bed next to me.

“Hey,” he murmured. “I apologize for shouting at you. I was not serious.

Still angry, I turned to face him. Why is the money so desperately needed by you? I enquired.

Tom turned away, dodging my gaze. He continued, sidestepping the subject, “I really didn’t want to yell.”

“Tom, why do you need the money?” I firmly asked.

He gave a deep, lengthy sigh. “My father owes a lot of money. He wasn’t a nice guy when I was a child. He hit me, drank, and one day he got up and left my mom and me. He’s back now. Although he claims to have changed, he still requires money to pay for everything.

My heart hurt for him when I heard this. This wasn’t the self-assured Tom I knew. This young youngster was hurting and hoped his father had changed. “You do realize he’s probably taking advantage of you?” I asked in a hushed voice so as not to offend him further.

“Perhaps,” Tom said softly. “But I don’t want to feel bad for giving up.”

I threw my arms around him mindlessly. He gave me a strong hug in return, and I could hear him crying softly. We continued to cling onto one other without speaking.

Tom

Everything between Zoe and me altered after that talk. We laughed, spoke, and generally enjoyed each other’s company for an extended period of time.

I became aware of how comfortable and enjoyable it felt to be with her. I quickly came to the conclusion that I was in love with her. Though I couldn’t be certain, I assumed she might feel the same way. I refrained from expressing my emotions since I didn’t want to cause trouble.

Then, I received a call from the police the day of the final. After attempting to rob a business, my dad got into an altercation. It really got to me. We were about to start filming, but I really wanted to inform Zoe. There was not enough time.

Every couple spoke about their goals and reasons for coming as we gathered around the campfire. I saw that Zoe appeared anxious. She continued to fidget, looking everywhere.

I’m not sure why, but I reached over and grabbed her hand. It felt natural. We took turns speaking, and I jumped right in to give her a little extra time. I was aware of her need.

We have a really romantic narrative, I said, trying to sound assured. “At the airport, we met.” To this, the group gathered around the campfire let out a collective “Awww.”

I went on, not making any up for the first time in a week, “I never imagined how much this woman would change my life.” If Zoe hadn’t been there…

Zoe abruptly leaped to her feet. She exclaimed, “I’m sorry, I can’t keep doing this!” “Tom and I aren’t together! Everything is phony! We’re not in the same room!

As her comments lingered in the atmosphere, Zoe darted out into the night before I could respond. I sat there in disbelief, my head swimming. I just wanted to follow her around.

Zoe

I did not care where I ended up; I just ran as fast as my legs would allow. Not only was I running, but I was also feeling confused and guilty, and my heart was pounding.

I was furious with myself. Despite my disappointment to Tom, I had to stop acting like a fool. There were now too many lies. Every word he said about how we met felt like a knife to the gut.

I had grown in love with him somewhere along the line, which is why it stung. I had to flee because I was unable to bear the reality of my own emotions any longer.

“Zoe! Hold on!” Tom called and quickly caught up with me.

I came to a stop, my vision already hazy with tears. “Tom, I apologize. I just couldn’t lie longer, even though I know you need the money for your dad.

Tom cupped my face tenderly in his palms. Zoe, pay attention to what I say. My dad and the money don’t matter to me. The police made an earlier call. The charges against him were assault and robbery. He is still the same. However, it isn’t what counts. You are the important thing. Zoe, I’ve developed feelings for you. It happened, albeit I’m not sure when it did.

Startled, I blinked. “Are you serious about that? Therefore, all you mentioned by the fire…

With his gaze fixed on mine, Tom said, “It was all true.”

I grabbed Tom’s hands and drew him in until there was no more room between us. I gave him a mindless kiss. He seemed a little stunned at first, but then he kissed me back, and the rest just kind of went away.

Nothing else mattered at that moment, not the turmoil we’d experienced, the lies, or the competitiveness. We were content, and all I wanted was to spend as much time as possible with him.
