Desi Arnaz Jr.: The Surprising Journey After Stepping Away from the Spotlight!

Born into renowned parents, Desi Arnaz Jr. began his career as a celebrity.
Afterwards, he dated frequently and battled some significant problems before eventually getting married.
In recent years, the actor lost one of his granddaughters and a kid before being seen by admirers.

Desi Jr. rose to stardom at a very young age and then battled addiction. He got married after making amends in his life and giving up being a playboy. Since then, he has lost his granddaughter, and after putting his career on hold, he now likes living in the background.

Desi Jr.’s Life’s Beginning

Desi Arnaz Jr. is well-known as the child of the late Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, both iconic figures from the classic series “I Love Lucy.” His mother was pregnant with him during the filming of the show, which adds a unique and personal connection to that beloved television program in his life.

On January 19, 1953, audiences eagerly watched as the character Ricky Ricardo, the son of Lucy Ricardo, made his debut in the classic comedy series. Now at 77, Desi Jr. shared that this particular episode was shot four months before he was born. The producers had already decided that Lucy’s character would welcome a baby boy.

On Monday morning, the actress’s real-life kid was delivered, and the same night the birth episode aired. Desi Jr. said, “Because it was in all the newspapers the next day, many people thought that I was born on the air.”

Though he never did, viewers persisted in thinking that Lucille’s son was born into the character of Ricky. Rather, over the years, the role was portrayed by a number of different actors. A few years after “I Love Lucy” ended, Desi Jr.’s mother went on to become the lead actress in the sitcom “Here’s Lucy.”

Many referred to Lucille as the “queen of television comedy” because of her roles in shows like “The Lucy Show.” She returned to the spotlight in 1986 as the lead in the disastrous film “Life With Lucy.” After undergoing open heart surgery, she passed away from cardiac arrest three years later.

Desi Jr.’s father had died a few years earlier, and she had left him an orphan when she was 77 years old. Even though Lucille’s child pursued acting, he had to put his career on pause due to personal difficulties. A problem he had was addiction.

Having Addiction Problems

At the age of 14, Desi Jr. rose to fame as a member of the pop rock group “Dino, Desi, and Billy,” which put out the song “I’m a Fool.” In 1968 until 1974, he costarred in “Here’s Lucy” with his older sister, Lucie Arnaz, to begin his acting career. He made his screen debut as an actor in 1970’s “Red Sky at Morning.”

He starred in “Billy Two Hats” and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer for his performance. At the age of 29, Desi Jr. was experiencing a lot of hardships; he described himself as being “dangerously close to the terminal stage of (substance) abuse.”

He attempted alcoholism and chemical abuse as a form of self-medication since he felt hollow inside. “I was destroying myself,” Lucille’s son admitted in confession, “and I got tired of being me.” His parents were also severely impacted by his substance misuse.

As Lucille famously put it, “I can’t tell you how much his addiction hurt us.” She acknowledged that she made an effort to pay attention to and comprehend her son. During that difficult period, the actress also made an effort to be tough and strong, but “It tore me apart.”

After his parents divorced when he was just six years old, Desi Jr. maintained a strong relationship with his father. In keeping with family tradition, Desi Sr. sent a formal letter to his son when he turned 16. This letter represented a significant rite of passage for Desi Jr., marking his transition into adulthood and playing a crucial role in shaping the young actor’s future.

The older dad advised his son to “learn from the difficulties” and simplify his life. The kid of Lucille was advised by her ex-husband, “The purpose in life is not the temporary rewards but a deeper lasting happiness.”

Desi Jr. ultimately went through a detoxification process in a rehab program, significantly motivated by the advice from his father. During this period, his parents, Lucille and her former husband, were encouraged to join him for support, and both willingly agreed. Looking back on the experience, their eldest child described it as “one of the most incredible things that could have occurred.”

He remembered how encouraging they were, and how much what had occurred to him had benefited them. Desi Jr.’s recovery was aided by entering rehabilitation, and the creators of “The Mambo Kings” eventually requested him to play his late father. Desi Jr. refused to take the part; Desi Sr. passed away in 1986.

He thought the timing wasn’t quite right at the time because his mother had recently passed away, but he later changed his mind. In addition to his problems with drugs, Desi Jr. led an active social life.

Being the Playboy

Desi Jr., who is now 25 years old, said that he was once a playboy. He didn’t know what love was, but since he was 13, he believed he was in love. However, by the age of 25, he adopted the mindset, “If it feels good, hang in there,” and said, “I guess I’m a playman.”

His days as a playboy were widely reported. Though he attended Beverly Hills High School and graduated, he decided not to attend college. He dated Patty Duke, a 23-year-old, when he was 17. Desi Jr., who was in his middle twenties, referred to Patty as a “friend” and avoided talking about their past.

His sister disclosed that although Patti was quite unstable at the time, she had adored her brother. She pursued him across the nation until he stopped their relationship because she was so infatuated with him. When Liza Minnelli opened his bedroom door and introduced herself, he was three years old.

He met Patti in Las Vegas after Cabaret, two years after they had first dated, and they began dating when she was twenty-six. They lived together for eighteen months, but he said they were constantly on the road. Their relationship suffered from their frequent travels.

Liza ultimately chose Peter Sellers over Desi Jr. The actress saw Desi Jr. in New York following Sellers, but before divorcing her second husband, Jack Haley Jr. Speaking of his relationship with Liza, Lucille’s son stated that their improved self-awareness has led to a deeper understanding of one another.

Along with Tina Sinatra and Kim Darby, he also tried dating skater Dorothy Hamill. When he brought Dorothy to Dino Martin, their one and only date went awry. Her doubles partner was Desi Jr.’s friend and former pop-rock bandmate, who claimed, “I wasn’t jealous then, but now I am.”

“Back then, Desi was in love three times a week,” Dino remembered. Billy Hinsche was the best musician they had when they were in a band, Lucille’s son was “the lover of the group,” and Dino was the “wild man.”

Dino stated that they had little trouble finding “ten to twelve-year-old” groupies. Even though the actor moved in and out of relationships during his earlier years, he eventually settled down and started a family.

Getting Comfortable

In 1992, at the age of 38, Desi Jr. revealed that he had found stability in his life. Living in Nevada, he had tied the knot with a dance instructor. From her previous marriage, his new wife brought a 14-year-old daughter into their blended family, creating a new chapter for them all.

The actor served as the national ambassador for the charity spiritual development program New Life Foundation and seemed to have completely calmed down. He occasionally worked in theater and made pictures when he thought they were worthwhile.

But he made it clear that his priorities were returning to traditional values in his life rather than pursuing a profession. His preference was to lead a modest life. However, Desi Jr. also shared a biological kid, Julia Howe, with Susan Callahan-Howe, his former model, through a liaison.

The Stormy Bond Between Desi Jr. and His Daughter

Julia’s mother claimed as a child that her father is a member of the Hollywood royalty. She made the decision to take care of things alone after her grandmother Lucille passed away. She was served with a subpoena for a DNA test, which was completed when she was twenty years old and yielded a 99.97% result.

The dad and daughter soon developed a “beautiful relationship.” The celebrity’s daughter thought that even if he didn’t have to build a relationship with her, he should have accepted her as his when she turned eighteen and beyond, but he didn’t.

Julia claimed that their relationship didn’t endure very long. She worked close to Manhattan, took drugs, and was 25 years old in 1994. Unfortunately, she had nothing good to say about him.

Julia clarified that her only expectations from Desi Jr. were that he would return her calls and correspondence. She pointed out how her father supported others struggling with drug and alcohol addiction while he did not reach out to help “his own flesh and blood,” speculating that “maybe he’s weak like me.”

The relationship between the father and daughter appeared to improve with time, and in 2021 Julia disclosed how much he had contributed to her life. The 25-year-old also mentioned how her father helped Desiree S. Anzalone, her daughter, pay for college. Sadly, the star’s granddaughter passed away recently.

His Granddaughter Passes Away

Prior to his granddaughter’s death on September 27, 2020, from stage 4 breast cancer, Desi Jr. formed a close bond with her. The 31-year-old succumbed to the illness at the Smilow Cancer Center in Connecticut. She was born on September 15, 1989, to Julia and Mario Anzalone.

Desiree was the first great-grandchild of Desi Sr. and Lucille. Although her mother claimed that Desiree passed away “peacefully,” she also admitted that she wouldn’t wish for her worst enemy to witness Desiree “slip away.” Julia believes that no mother should be forced to watch it.

She called her late daughter “something else” and “special.” They remain the closest pals they have with her “mini-me.” Desiree reminded Julia of her grandmother, and Julia remembered how lovely she was on the inside as well.

When Desi Jr.’s granddaughter was initially diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, she was 25 years old. After receiving chemotherapy, she ultimately chose to have a double mastectomy. After a period of remission, Desiree learned in 2018 that the cancer had come back.

It returned as stage 4, spreading to her liver, lungs, and bones. Though the cancer had begun to spread and the tumors were larger, Julia believes her daughter could have remained with them for a few more years. Desiree’s family had anticipated her to make it through the holidays, at the very least.

Desi Jr.’s granddaughter had a problem since fluid continued to accumulate around her heart. After surgery, the problem would resurface in two weeks. Desiree had undergone surgery and come back after twelve hours when she passed away.

Then they told Julia that it was “really tough” for her to just have days or hours with her daughter. Julia was present for the loss, which she called “unimaginable.” The photographer had hormonal chemotherapy prior to her passing.

During October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Desiree wanted to educate people. “To give awareness for young girls her age because this does happen,” stated her mother. Though it’s uncommon, it does occur.

The late Desi Jr.’s granddaughter wished for everyone to know that getting checked out should always be done if you feel uneasy, regardless of age. Even though Desiree’s scenario was unique, similar situations do occur; they are just less frequently discussed.

Those that experience what Desiree did are typically in their late 30s, early 40s, or early 50s. Preventive precautions were something the late photographer wanted women like her to know about. Ironically, her initial diagnosis came just after her birthday—prior to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Her second diagnosis of stage 4 cancer came just after her birthday and before Breast Cancer Awareness Month, approximately three years later. It was odd to Julia that the diagnosis came “every three years or so.”

Julia was unable to spend much time with Desiree in her dying days due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reason the sickness kept them apart, according to Desi Jr.’s daughter, was so that Desiree wouldn’t get sick again.

They used to get together every day when the photographer was there, but she didn’t see her daughter as much. Fortunately for Julia, her daughter spent some time living with her. Julia observed that Desiree spent a lot of time with Desi Jr., confirming the close relationship between the two of them.

The grandchild spent perhaps four or five months living with her grandfather at one point. The late photographer was present at the 2008 TV Land Awards, which celebrated her great-grandmother. Fans have responded to Desi Jr.’s sister’s multiple posts of his images since Desiree’s passing.

What Fans Feel About Desi Jr.’s Latest Appearance

Following his career pause, Desi Jr. gave fans a sneak glance at his current appearance. Lucie shared a cute Instagram snapshot of herself kissing her brother’s cheek while he was making a silly expression in honor of his birthday in 2022.

“Who loves you, Baby???” was her caption for the photo. My charming and eccentric brother turned 69 today. Happy birthday! Desi, you have my love.” The son of Lucille Ball had short gray hair and matched mustache and goatee.

Lucie celebrated him once more on his special day on Instagram the following year, posting three pictures. The first one, which looked just like the one from the year before, showed her smiling and putting her arms around his neck.

The second one seems to depict the twins’ true appearance in 2023. Lucie’s brother also had gray hair, but Desi Jr.’s hair and beard were longer and scruffier this time. He had on a cap and spectacles as well. In the third photo, he was hugged by his sister.

He donned spectacles once more, and his hair and beard were gray. With that, Lucie wished “Little Desi” a “very happy and healthy 7th decade.” She confessed her love and indiscriminately verified that he had never played Ricky.

Lucie Arnaz posted the most recent pictures of her brother on August 3, 2024. She placed her head on his shoulder and gave him an arm hug in the first photo of them together. Desi Jr. donned a cap and had even longer hair and mustache.

Lucie’s second image differed in that her eyes were open. Desi Jr.’s sister and friends were shown in the third and fourth pictures. For treating his family and their “special guest, my recalcitrant brother” to a dinner at Wally’s in Las Vegas, Lucie expressed her gratitude to Nick Luckinbill.

She mentioned Desi Jr.’s survival and well-being, but also disclosed his preference for remaining hidden. The siblings were attending The Treksperts Convention’s 35th Anniversary of “Star Trek V” event in Las Vegas at the time.

One fan said, “Seriously wonder why a nice looking guy with a few bucks (I’m assuming) wants to look like a homeless person,” in the flurry of reactions from fans. Perhaps he’s not feeling well.”

“Behind that thick beard, is that Desi? Another said, “I think I recognize his sweet eyes.” Similar to the last commenter, a netizen said, “I never would have recognized him.” A further perplexed person asked, “Is that Desi Jr in the first 2 photos?”
