My Boyfriend’s Public Proposal Ended with a Slap – Here’s Why

My Boyfriend Proposed to Me in Public at a Restaurant, and I Immediately Slapped Him

On my birthday, a busy restaurant should have been the scene of a dream proposal, but it wasn’t. I never thought the moment would turn into a nightmare when my boyfriend proposed to me on one knee.

My birthday cake’s candles had just blown out. at an instant, I was beaming broadly at the little Italian restaurant with my loved ones. One moment I was gawking in shock. My five-year boyfriend Noah shocked me by proposing to me on one knee while holding a diamond. 💍

“These last five years have been the happiest of my life,” he said to Clarissa. Would you please—”

However, I stopped him short. My palm sprang out, slamming hard against Noah’s cheek as soon as I saw the ring inside the box. All of our families gasped together, and the restaurant went silent.

With his eyes wide with disbelief, Noah’s hand shot to his reddening cheek. “Clarissa! How in the world—”

“How could you?” With tears hurting my eyes, I hissed. “How dare you propose to me with THAT RING?”

Noah’s vision became confused. “What topic are you discussing? This is the one I chose specifically for you.

My hands trembling, I grabbed the ring out of the box and looked it over. The intricate band, studded with vivid diamonds, looked just as I had remembered it from the picture.

And there it was, the incriminating carving of the initials L.F. on the side of the band.

“Noah, don’t tell me lies. Lorraine wears this ring. “My closest pal’s ring!”

Noah’s expression turned pale. Lorraine? What role does she play in this?

I could feel every diner’s eyes glaring at us in the restaurant. I was so embarrassed and angry that my cheeks burned.

“Last week, she gave me an image of this exact ring. claimed to be her “secret boyfriend.” It’s unbelievable that you’ve been skulking around with my closest pal.”

Noah looked shocked. “Clarissa, you’re completely incorrect. I would never—”

“Noah, you would never? Never betray me again? Never tell me a lie in front of me? The proof is right here, though!” With a shaking hand from anger, I shoved the ring into his face.

Noah straightened up, pained and irritated all over his face. “Clarissa, just give me a moment of your time. All of this is a major misunderstanding.”

“A misunderstanding?” I gave a sour laugh. “Oh, I get it completely. Did you not think you could have us both? My closest friend and my boyfriend, moving behind my back. Noah, how long have you been doing this? Weeks? Months?”

Clearly frustrated, Noah ran his hands over his hair. “I promise you, Clarissa, that there is no romantic relationship between Lorraine and me. If you’d just give me a chance, I can explain why she has a picture of this ring, I’m not sure why she does.

With tears streaming down my cheeks, I shook my head. “I had faith in you, Noah. I cherished you. Is this the way you pay me back? via asking her out using her ring?”

With a worried expression on her face, my mother moved forward. “Clarissa, darling, maybe we should all calm down and—”

“No, mother! I’m not going to stop. Are you familiar with the sensation of having your heart broken on your birthday? by the man you’re in love with? before everyone you care about?”

I flinched away as Noah reached out to touch my arm. “Avoid touching me! I’m unable to even look at you at this time.

“Please, Clarissa. You expect me to throw everything away after five years of dating? I’m giving you that ring. Just you. I swear I had nothing to do with Lorraine’s situation, but I’m not sure what’s going on with her.”

I looked around the restaurant and saw right away that someone was absent. “Where is she now? Lorraine, where are you?

Tom, my brother, made an uneasy clearing of his throat. “She walked out a few minutes ago, I think. declared that she didn’t feel well.

I chuckled. “She did, of course. Couldn’t bear to see her little scheme fail, could she?

Noah’s gaze expanded. “Strategic? “What are you talking about, Clarissa?”

“Oh, Noah, stop acting foolish. Now it’s clear. Lorraine shows me the ring, anticipating that you will use it to pop the question. What was the goal in this case? to make me feel inferior? to split us apart?”

Noah gave a fierce shake of his head. I swear to you, Clarissa, I have no idea what’s going on. However, I adore you. Just you. Could we just talk about this, please?”

In an attempt to center myself, I inhaled deeply. My logical mind was yelling at me to pay attention and give Noah an opportunity to clarify. However, the pain and betrayal were just too much.

I murmured, “I need some air,” and turned to head for the door. “I need to find Lorraine.”

“Clarissa, wait!” I got a call from Noah after I did. “Allow me to accompany you. Together, we can solve this problem.”

At the door, I stopped and gave him one more look. “No, Noah. I have to handle this alone. I require Lorraine to tell me the whole truth.”

I left a surprised Noah and a room full of confused patrons behind as I walked out of the restaurant, ready to see my best friend and find out what really went wrong on this disastrous birthday.

I bounded out onto the pavement, feeling the cool night air like a smack across the face. Half a block distant, I saw Lorraine’s receding form.

“LORRAINE!” My voice resounded off the buildings as I yelled. “Stop right there!”

Her shoulders hunched as though she was ready for a blow when she froze. She turned slowly as I got to her, a troubled expression in her eyes.

“I can explain, Clarissa,” she said.

“What exactly should I explain? How have you been skulking around with my partner?”

Lorraine’s gaze expanded. “What? Not at all! I would never—”

“Preserve it. Dear Lorraine, I noticed the ring. The one you claimed you received from your “secret boyfriend.” Guess what, though? With that exact ring, Noah just attempted to pop the question to me.

I was shocked to see Lorraine’s face crease and her eyes well up with tears. “Oh, Clarissa, I’ve made such a terrible mistake.”

Before she could say anything more, Noah leaped to his feet, panting a little. “Please, let me explain, Clarissa,” he pleaded.

With my eyes flaming, I turned on him. “What, Noah? Tell me. How did you think using my best friend’s ring to pop the question work?”

With a hint of irritation in his voice, Noah ran a hand through his hair. “This ring isn’t Lorraine’s! I had it manufactured especially for you. L.F. is not an acronym for Lorraine. or Fisher. It represents “Love Forever.” Remember that it’s our thing?”

For a brief period, I hesitated, recalling how we would always sign our communications to one another with L.F. I shook my head, though.

“How did Lorraine have a picture of it?”

Perplexed, Noah turned to face Lorraine. “Yes, Lorraine. How did you get a photo of Clarissa’s engagement ring?”

With a trembling breath, Lorraine dabbed at her tear-stained cheeks. “I’m really sorry,” she said. “When Noah showed it to me last week, I noticed the ring. He wanted to know what I thought and that you would adore it.”

It was as though something was moving under my feet. “But… you said it was from your secret boyfriend.”

Lorraine slumped her shoulders. “There’s not a covert partner. Everything was made up by myself. I was attempting to pull a practical joke on you two.”

A practical joke? Why would you act in that way, Lorraine?” I let out a gasp.

She couldn’t meet our gaze as she cast a downcast gaze. I was envious of you, Clarissa. Noah and you complement one other so well. I don’t know whether I could make you doubt one another, even for a brief minute. I suppose what I wanted was to feel important and that I had some influence on your relationship.”

The rage that was driving me abruptly vanished, to be replaced with a twinge of hurt and sympathy. “Oh, Lorraine, did you really think this was the way to go about it?”

Noah took a step forward and said, “Lorraine, you’re Clarissa’s best friend.” “You are important to us both. If you felt excluded, why didn’t you just come talk to us?”

Lorraine shook her head and sniffed. “I realize it was foolish. It’s not where I intended it to end up. I assumed Clarissa would only become a bit skeptical, after which I would let her know it was all a joke. I was not thinking. I had no idea how much harm that would do.”

Tears formed in my eyes as I turned to face Noah. “I’m so sorry, honey,” I damaged everything by drawing hasty assumptions.”

Gently grinning, he clasped my hand in his. “Nothing is damaged. I must admit, though, that this wasn’t exactly how I had envisioned this evening unfolding.”

A weak laugh leaked out of me. “I imagine not.”

Lorraine took a step back and said, “I’m so sorry, both of you,” her voice faltering. “This was not what I intended to happen. If you decide you never want to talk to me again, that’s okay.

I noticed the remorse and pain in my best friend’s eyes as I gazed at her. I couldn’t stand the notion of losing her in spite of everything.

“What you did, Lorraine, was incorrect. It was painful and had the potential to ruin my relationship. However, you remain my closest friend. We’ll figure this out.”

“Are you serious? following my actions?”

I extended my hand to give her a squeeze. “Friends act in this way. They are pardoning. However, talk to us the next time you’re feeling envious or left out. Please stop pulling jokes.

“I swear. Never once more.”

There was a hint of nervousness in me as we headed back to the restaurant. “Everyone must be thinking I’m crazy,” I whispered.

Noah gave a comforting squeeze to my hand. “They’ll understand once we explain.”

As we retreated into the cozy eatery, everyone’s gaze was fixed on us. With a worried expression on her face, my mother hurried over.

“Clarissa, darling, what happened?”

I inhaled deeply. “There was a miscommunication. A significant one. But for now, everything is well.”

With a clear throat, Noah spoke to our families as well as the interested bystanders.

“I apologize to everyone for the disturbance earlier. I’d like to give this another go if you don’t mind waiting a little while.” With a gentle smile, he turned to face me.

As Noah got down on one knee once more and produced the ring that had created such havoc, my heart skipped a beat. This time, I recognized it for what it really was: a testament to his devotion and affection.

“These last five years have been an adventure,” Noah said to Clarissa. We’ve experienced ups and downs, miscommunications and reconciliations. However, my love for you has only gotten stronger with time. You’re the lady I want to spend the rest of my life with, my best friend, and my co-conspirator. Are you going to marry me?

I nodded excitedly, tears of delight streaming down my cheeks. “Yes,” was all I could manage to say. “Yes, I’ll marry you!”

With Noah’s ring on my finger, the restaurant exploded in cheers and enthusiasm. He stood and drew me into a kiss, and I knew then that this wild night would become a tale we would tell for years to come.

I couldn’t help but notice that sometimes, the unexpected turns in life make love and life even more significant as I gazed about at my loved ones’ happy expressions. 💞
