A Proposal Surprise: I Was Ready for the Dream, But the Ring Wasn’t for Me
The day’s story: I was prepared for the proposal of my dreams, but I never imagined that the ring wasn’t for me.
I believed that Josh would pop the question on our anniversary. Everything appeared to be coming together until my dreams were dashed by an unexpected turn. Everything I believed to be true about us was altered when I realized the ring wasn’t intended for me.

After a little more than a year of cohabitation, Josh and I felt completely at home. It seemed as though my life had finally come together as I had always imagined. I found it in his backpack while searching for something a few days prior to our anniversary.
The ring!
For a moment, my heart stopped beating. Holding the small velvet box and gazing at the diamond within, I stood motionless.
Is this a real thing?
I hurriedly closed the box out of concern that I would ruin the surprise if I peered too closely. I couldn’t help myself, though. Josh intended to pop the question.
It must be this!

The anniversary meal with his parents felt like the ideal occasion for him to pop the question, and the timing couldn’t have been more right.
I had recently finished a large project and sent it to investors for approval. Now that I had a free schedule, I felt as though providence had given me this opportunity to concentrate on us.
I organized a weekend getaway to Paris as a surprise for our anniversary. I had reduced everything for months in order to conserve money. I turned to Josh’s best friend, Wayne. I trusted him to hide the surprise since he had always been there.
I explained my idea to Wayne, saying, “I want this to be special.” Would you be able to assist me with organizing everything? Josh will notice if I’m acting strangely, and I’m not very good at concealing secrets.
Wayne nodded, although his eyes were slightly worried. Yes, Kate, I am able to assist. However, don’t you feel that you’re going a little too far?
“Perhaps, but I want it to be flawless. I find it important.

“All right, I’ll assist set everything up and make some calls. But keep in mind that sometimes the most memorable things are the most basic.
I wanted Josh to know how much he meant to me, even if I valued his opinion.
We got at Josh’s family estate the next day. The place was far larger than I had anticipated. Darlene, Josh’s mother, smiled warmly at him and gave him a short hug.
While grasping his arm, she remarked, “Josh, darling, it’s been too long.” “I hope you haven’t forgotten your roots because of the city.”
Josh gave a tense laugh. “Obviously not, Mom.”
I stood there expecting her to greet me in some way, but she didn’t. She didn’t give me a sidelong glance. It felt like I was attempting to break through a wall of ice when I smiled.
The situation only worsened during supper. In between mouthful, Darlene gave me a quick glance.

“So, Kate,” she started, gently setting down her fork, “you must be really busy with… your work?”
Yes, I recently completed a significant project. Last week, I presented it to a few investors.
“Oh, how nice,” she said, sounding less impressed and more contemptuous. “You know, women in this family are more than just pretty faces.”
Is this a barb or a compliment?
“We’re strategists,” she added, bending forward a little as her charming smile grew. “We are aware of how to safeguard our property.”
Like a warning, her words lingered in the air, thick and cold. Josh appeared unaware of the tension as he sipped his wine.

I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that I didn’t belong as we sat in silence in the living room later, the tension from dinner still hanging over me. Nevertheless, I kept the ring in mind whenever doubt started to creep in.
Our anniversary was the following day, and I woke up feeling giddy with anticipation for the upscale dinner we had reserved.
I smiled as I pictured the ring on my finger by the end of the night and murmured to myself, “Today is the day.”
Darlene was surprisingly much friendlier than she had been the previous evening.
She stated over breakfast, “I hope you had a good night’s sleep, Kate.”
Something didn’t feel quite right by the time we were in the garden having appetizers. I had the unshakeable impression that everyone’s focus was elsewhere. When I looked around, I saw a woman I had never seen before.
“Who is that?” I leaned over to ask Josh.
He didn’t even raise his head. “Oh, that’s Linda.” pal from childhood.
She appeared to be the evening’s main attraction. Every word she said had everyone waiting. When she eventually arrived, she gave me a quick glance before focusing entirely on Josh and grinning broadly.

Her voice was smooth and sugary as she said, “Josh, it’s been too long.”
Then she gave me a quick look, her smile hardening.
She eyed me up and down and stated, “That dress… is not for such an event.” However, you manage to wear it well enough.
I was so embarrassed that my cheeks burned. The words stuck in my throat as I opened my mouth to speak. All of a sudden, I felt uncomfortable.
It became painfully obvious as the evening wore on that Linda was more than simply an old acquaintance. I was not really sure why she was connected to Josh’s family.
I heard Darlene mutter to Linda, “Everything will fall into place soon,” and it sent a shiver down my spine.
What does that signify?
Josh turned to me before I could even process it. “Kate, I have to tell you something.”
Fear twisted my gut as I glanced at him. Josh, what is it?
He avoided looking at me and took a big breath.

Linda and I… We’ve spent a lot of time together. You’re amazing, and I tried to adore you, but His voice broke. “My parents are more aware of my needs. I can’t let my mother down.
The ground seemed to have vanished beneath me.
Josh went to the middle of the room, where everyone was gathered, and dropped down on one knee before I could even react. In front of everyone, he proposed to Linda after looking up at her.
I was at a loss for what to do. I was so overcome with weeping that I could hardly see anything as I hurried through the garden from the estate.
How could he? How could Josh have hurt me like this?
My sneakers caught on the uneven path as I staggered over the cobblestones. Everything seemed off, as though the universe had suddenly fallen apart.
A hand suddenly grabbed my elbow. Startled, I turned and saw Wayne standing there.

“Kate, hold on!” he yelled, a little breathless. “You left your purse in the hallway.”
I muttered, using the back of my hand to wipe my face, mortified by how shattered I must have appeared. “Oh… thanks,” I said.
“I witnessed everything,” Wayne said. “I understand how difficult this must be. You shouldn’t be alone yourself at this moment.
I wanted to push him away and let him know that I needed some privacy. In actuality, though, I had no notion how to remain by myself at that time.
“Come on. Around the corner is a small bakery. Shall we have a croissant and some coffee? You must relax.
We took seats at a little table near the window. Wayne gave me a coffee cup. “Kate, I believe you should be aware of this.”
“What is it?”
Linda… Josh’s family has always desired for him to be with her. Even when he was with you, they were discussing it for years.
Wayne looked at me regretfully. Josh never really talked about you. You were always… transient.

My hands were shaking as I held the cup. “I was merely a placeholder, then?”
Wayne let out a sigh. “You deserve to know the truth, even if I know it hurts. Linda and I lost our friendship a long time ago. She is… cunning. However, I attended the celebration out of consideration for Josh’s family.
I felt a tremendous and intense surge of anger. I felt so stupid. Although I had only been a convenience, I believed Josh and I had a bright future together.
My phone buzzed before I had a chance to relax. When I looked down, I noticed an SMS that made all the difference.
“The investors said yes,” I muttered.
Wayne scowled as he leaned closer. “Wait, really?”
“Yes. My project is in progress.
His face glowed with sincere joy. “That’s amazing, Kate! I was aware that you possessed it.
I grinned. It seems unreal. In fact, everything I’ve worked for is about to take off.

I looked at him and said, “There’s this event next week.” With the investors, it’s a big one. It’s similar to my project’s formal debut.
“That sounds a little fancy.”
I chuckled quietly. Indeed, it sort of is. However, there is one minor detail.
“Oh?” Wayne wanted to know.
“A date is required.”
“A date?”
“There is no one better to be there with me, in my opinion. Wayne, you’ve been there for me in my hour of need. So, would you accompany me?
“Me?” He gestured to himself as though I may have been referring to someone else.
“You, indeed.” Feeling a little uneasy, I grinned.
“I would be honored, Kate.”
The event night arrived sooner than I had anticipated. I felt different, confident, and like a totally different person as I stood in front of the mirror wearing an expensive outfit that I had chosen. That was my turn.

Wayne, looking dapper in his suit, picked me up. “Wow, you look amazing.”
“Thank you, let’s get this done.”
Josh was there with his family. Every year, they went to that event, and I had been preparing for the confrontation for retribution. However, an odd thing occurred when I noticed Josh on the other side of the room.
All of the previous emotions, including rage and the drive to prove myself, were absent. It didn’t matter to me anymore.
Wayne also took note of Josh. “You okay?”
I gave a nod. Yes, I’m alright. In fact, it’s better than fine.
I became aware of something significant as I observed Josh and his family interacting with the other visitors. I didn’t have to convince them of anything. No more.
That had nothing to do with getting even or letting them know what they had lost. I had changed from that person.
I realized something more profound when I looked at Wayne. He had no right to be included in any retaliation scheme.

I smiled as I said to him, “Let’s leave this place.” “Back to that our bakery, maybe?”
He grinned back, and his eyes brightened.
“You sure?”
“Absolutely.”
I felt lighter as we walked out together. It wasn’t until that night that I realized my value came from within. And I could start over without the burden of the past weighing me down if Wayne was by my side.
