A Week After Our House Was Robbed, My Unemployed Son Showed Up with a New Sports Car

A Week Ago, My House Was Robbed — Today, My Son (Who Doesn’t Have a Job) Bought Himself a Sports Car
Karen is surprised to discover her son driving a brand-new sports car a week after her life savings are stolen. Karen isn’t convinced when he says it’s from a new job. Karen is desperate to learn the truth about her son’s unexpected wealth as a furious argument breaks out as her suspicions increase.

My husband had been gone for twenty years. For twenty years, I had to eat improvised meals, work late hours, and look forward to payday like it was a lifeline.

It felt like I was one mistake away from everything falling apart, even though I should have been accustomed to the never-ending balancing act that comes with being a single mother.

But Jake was my life. My son’s creativity and bright eyes kept me going no matter how difficult things got. However, there was a significant issue.

Jake was twenty-five years old and still struggling.

He was unemployed and unpaid. Even though his painting was his lifeblood, it wasn’t enough to cover his expenses. And there were a ton of bills, I assure you. When someone broke into my lockbox and took all of my cash, the financial strain increased.

“You simply need to have faith in me, Mom. Who stole your money, I’ll find out. After my house was broken into last week, Jake had assured me that everything would be well.

However, he had spoken too quietly. I might have been too accustomed to things going wrong. Even still, the idea of that night just made the pit in my stomach grow. In an instant, all of the money I had saved over the years was gone.

Then the day arrived when everything was different. Jake had left, most likely to embark on a new project that would not pay.

I noticed the bright red sports automobile shining in the sunlight as I was at the corner store. It shouted cash. Expensive, ostentatious, and not appropriate for our community. As I prepared to get into my battered sedan, I noticed a familiar face: Jake.

He approached the sports vehicle and got into the driver’s seat. My mouth fell open.

As I made my way home, my mind was racing with ideas, each one more impractical than the last. Jake was twirling the keys to the sports car parked in my driveway as if they were insignificant as he leaned on the kitchen counter when I entered.

“Where did you get that car?” With my voice scarcely steady, I demanded.

He shrugged and looked up. “Oh, that? Mom, it’s nothing. I have a new job.

“A job?” I crossed my arms and scoffed. “What are you doing? Jake, you’ve never had a job in your life.”

Jake shoved by me to get a Coke from the refrigerator while rolling his eyes. “If you’re asking me to perform minimum-wage work, I’m not. It is authentic.

“Legit?” I couldn’t contain the laughter that erupted.

He clenched his jaw. “I’m not stealing, if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“Oh, really? Then, where did you obtain the funds for the vehicle? Or do you think I’ll think you just… happened to stumble into it?”

He yelled, “I don’t owe you an explanation,” “You wouldn’t get it anyway.”

My chest tightened. Now there was no avoiding it. I suddenly had fangs in the terrible suspicion that had been bothering me ever since the heist.

“You didn’t… take my money, did you?”

What right did you have to ask me that? It’s unbelievable that you would think that of me. This is what I get for doing nothing except trying to improve things?”

He slammed the door behind him and rushed out without saying another word.

I needed answers, but I didn’t want to think my son was a thief. I picked up my keys and went after him. I had to find out what he was up to.

It was simple to follow his new vehicle. I trailed him to a posh beauty parlor across town. As I saw him leave and wait by the curb, my eyes sharpened. Then she showed up.

A woman who appeared to be in her mid-forties and older than Jake left the salon. I stood motionless as she put her arms around Jake and planted a kiss on him. Nor was it merely a fleeting kiss. It was intimate.

As I sank farther down in my seat, my throat constricted. This woman was who? Furthermore, what on earth was Jake doing with her?

I made the decision to continue following them after they pulled away and got into the car together. The houses became mansions as they traveled to the town’s outskirts. As Jake’s sedan drew into the driveway of a vast house, my stomach turned.

My heart pounded. This was incorrect in addition to being odd. My entire being cried out for me to put an end to this.

I didn’t wait for another idea. After getting out of the car, I pounded on the front door until I thought it may break.

The woman from the salon appeared as the door swung open. Behind her, Jake emerged, his face instantly turning pale at the sight of me.

“Mom?”

I spit out, “Oh, you bet it’s your mom,” “What the hell is going on, Jake?”

The woman’s smile remained constant. “I assume you’re Karen. I’ve heard so much about you from Jake.

“And you are?” Without trying to disguise the poison in my voice, I yelled.

As if this was all quite normal, she held out her hand. Lydia. Jake’s girlfriend.

“Girlfriend?” The term nearly choked me. “Jake, what’s happening? For what duration has this been taking place?

“Three months,” Jake whispered, avoiding eye contact. “Mom, please, just calm down.”

Relax? Did he mean me?

“Calm down?” I said it again. “My house gets broken into, you show up in a sports car, and now I find out you’ve been shacked up with some rich woman for months?”

Lydia’s grin wavered slightly. “Karen, I think you’re misunderstanding—”

I narrowed my eyes and answered, “No, I understand perfectly,” to Jake. “You’re taking advantage of her. For this lifestyle, for her money. Was that car included in the agreement as well? Jake, have you been acting in this manner?

Jake’s expression grew glum.

“It’s not like that.”

“Then what is it like?” I fired back. “Because I can’t see anything else.”

I noticed hurt behind the rage that flared in Jake’s eyes.

He uttered, “I love Lydia, Mom,” Even if you don’t think that’s possible. I will refrain from arguing with you on our relationship. We’ll talk later.

He then slammed the door in my face.

I was waiting in the dark when Jake got home later. When he entered, I didn’t switch on the light.

Quietly, “Mom, we need to talk,” he whispered. He had lost his anger. Rather, he simply sounded worn out.

I inhaled deeply. “You’re correct. We do.

As if searching for the right words, he sat across from me and rubbed his hands together. He wasn’t made any easier by me.

“Lydia isn’t just some rich woman I’m using,” he revealed quietly. She has been assisting me. I’ve put a lot of effort into my paintings, yet nobody ever took me seriously. except from her. She encouraged me to display my work and connected me with industry professionals who recognized my potential.

I glanced at him as his words began to weigh heavily. “Jake…”

He said, “I know I should’ve told you about her earlier, but I was scared,” with a slight crack in his voice.

“I didn’t want you to believe I was acting shadily because you’ve been through so much. I got my first actual show thanks to Lydia. Mom, I have already sold enough to settle your bills. Everything.

I was speechless for a second as I looked at him. “You… what?”

“There was nothing unlawful about the money or the car. It came from my artwork. I had Lydia help me organize everything, and in two days there will be an exhibition. I wanted to surprise you because I’ve worked so hard for this.”

I muttered, “I’m sorry I doubted you,”

I saw my little child, who always had big aspirations, even when they seemed unreachable, for the first time in a long time when Jake looked at me.

Two days later, I entered a gallery where many people were looking at Jake’s artwork. After years of losing himself in his work, my son was finally getting recognized for his talent.

Jake took the stage to speak during the event.

“I appreciate everyone’s presence. For me, this night is crucial. However, I must admit that without my mother, none of this would have occurred. She is the reason I persevered through difficult times. This is all for you, Mom.

After giving me a smile from the podium, Jake held up the car’s keys, which completely shocked me. “I wanted to give you something that might ease your burden a bit. You deserve it. I’m grateful, Mom.

I could only cry as the room exploded in ovation. Finally, after years of hardship, things were going to get better.
