From Strangers to Soulmates: How a Rich Man Found Love on the Streets

The homeless people begging on the street outside Roger Landers’ office building frequently irritated the wealthy businessman. Every year, he thought, there appeared to be an increasing number of them.

A good-hearted person threw a coin in the cup of a young woman who was hunched against a wall as he passed. Roger felt the woman’s smile penetrate his heart as she looked up and grinned at her benefactor. That anonymous, hunched discomfort turned into a beautiful, dazzling woman in one instant.

Roger kept thinking about the instant the girl’s smile changed her face as soon as he entered the building. He was curious about her identity and the reasons for her decision to live on the desolate streets of Los Angeles.

Roger was nearly consumed by the young homeless woman for the remainder of the week. He kept a careful eye on her and once witnessed the magical metamorphosis up close after dropping a coin into her cup.

Sometimes the most unlikely locations can harbor love.

He kept thinking about her, making up stories about her, having tiny fantasies in which he realized she was either a reporter covering homelessness up close or a dedicated actor getting ready for a part.

Roger finally completed the task he had been hankering after all week on Friday afternoon after wrapping up his work for the day and dismissing his staff. He approached and struck up a conversation with the girl seated on the sidewalk.

“Hi,” he said clumsily. “May I get you a cup of coffee? Would that be okay? You appear quite icy. Grinning at him, the girl raised her face.

“Thank you,” she remarked in a kind manner. “I’d like that.” As she stood up, Roger was astounded by her poise and quiet, educated voice. He noticed that she was small, standing at 5′ 3″ in comparison to his 6′ 2″.

He got her hot food to go with her coffee after walking her to a local coffee shop. Her manners and gentle gestures caught Roger off guard once more. This girl was well-educated. How had she found herself homeless?

Roger asked the girl that same question when he saw the color return to her face after she had finished her coffee, grilled sandwich, and hot soup. “How did you get into this situation? Are you homeless?”

The female gave him a direct glance. Her lips curved into a sardonic smile. In her own words, “I was stupid, and trusting,” “The story isn’t unique. If you can believe it, I fell in love with this boy in my hometown of Idaho.

“I found him even more romantic and alluring because my parents didn’t like him. In summary, he persuaded me to take out my education savings and flee to Los Angeles with him. I would be a screenwriter, and he would be a movie star.

Roger regrettably shook his head. “A lot of people come out here every year, less than a handful make it!” said he.

“Well, I’ll never know.” The girl’s voice was tinged with resentment. “We made reservations at a motel for our first night in Los Angeles. Kevin was gone when I woke up in the morning, along with my money and everything else I owned.

Roger let out a gasp. “Have you contacted the police? Give your family a call. The girl had tears in her eyes and was shaking her head.

“I was too embarrassed. I negotiated with the management of the motel. I cleaned the rooms and she let me to sleep in the storeroom. I was able to eat thanks to tips from some of the patrons. However, her spouse then made an attempt. The girl gave a headshake. “You are aware of how it is. I ended up on the streets after leaving the motel.

“What’s your name?” Gently, Roger inquired.

The girl said, “Emma,” with one of those bright smiles. “Emma Sinclair from Preston, Idaho!”

Roger grinned back, “Well, Emma Sinclair from Preston, Idaho,” “I’m Roger Landers from Los Angeles, California, and I’m sending you home.”

Roger escorted Emma to a neighboring shopping center, where he purchased a luggage and multiple clothing for her. While she changed and emerged from the lavatory in a transformed state, he waited in the food court.

He purchased her a ticket home by driving her to the bus stop. He placed a hundred-dollar note in her hand. “Listen,” he said. “Don’t let any more charming rascals talk you into coming to L.A., OK?”

Emma’s tears were accompanied with a smile. She extended her arm to embrace Roger. “Thank you, thank you, and God bless you!”

Roger felt a heavy heart as he watched her go on the bus. What made him believe that this was an error? He wanted to plead with Emma to stay and chase after that bus. What was going on with him?

The small waif with the bright smile had captured Roger’s heart that night. He persuaded himself that he would regret it for the rest of his life if he let her go. “She’s special, and I love her.”

Roger drove into Preston, Idaho, two days later. When he arrived at the police station, he inquired as to Emma Sinclair’s whereabouts. One of the deputies questioned suspiciously, “Emma?” “What do you want with Emma?”

Roger became red. “Well, you see, I met her in LA, and I wanted to see if she was alright…”

The deputy gave him a thorough examination. Emma is located two doors down at her mother’s laundry. I’ll accompany you. I don’t want Emma to get into any more problems.”

As Roger entered the laundromat and spotted Emma, his heart began to race. Her face brightened as she raised her head. Roger realized then that she had been thinking the same thing—they belonged together!

Emma went to Los Angeles barely three weeks after her homecoming, but this time she was with a man who loved and adored her. She joined a program to assist fugitives in returning home, and at the end of the year, Roger and Emma were married.

What does this narrative teach us?

Giving to others has the power to change people. Roger discovered his own path to eternal bliss while assisting Emma.

Sometimes the most unlikely locations can harbor love. While everyone anticipated Roger to marry a socialite, he ended himself falling in love with a homeless waif.
