In the 1970s, Jeff Bridges was filming a movie in Montana when he unexpectedly met the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on. Unaware that they were meant to be together through all of life’s ups and downs, she turned him down when he tried to ask her out.
Known for playing The Dude in the 1998 film “The Big Lebowski,” Jeff Bridges met Susan (née Geston), his wife, while working on “Rancho Deluxe.” He connected with her right away, and he later encouraged her to look into his professional options.
The actor and producer, who previously acted in the films “Starman” (1984), “Crazy Heart” (2009), and “True Grit” (2010), claims that he fell in love with his future wife at first sight. Susan was a waitress in Paradise Valley, Montana, where he was shooting the 1975 picture at the time.
He couldn’t keep his eyes off her when he saw her, and she was working to pay for college. He thought she was lovely despite having “two black eyes and a broken nose,” stating, “That damage juxtaposed to the beauty just had me.”
Jeff pictured himself rescuing her from an abusive lover, but he later found out that she had sustained the bruises in a vehicle accident. She turned him down when he eventually worked up the nerve to ask her out. However, the makeup artist for the movie took their picture right then and there, documenting their initial conversation.
The actor got these pictures in the mail fifteen years later. The photographer thought Jeff was asking Susan out, and his first words to his future wife were that he was rejected.

By 2020, Grace and Ben, a boy and a girl, were the couple’s grandchildren. They had challenges, just like any other relationship, particularly after Jeff was given a life-threatening diagnosis.

Jeff’s diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a lymphatic system malignancy, was the couple’s greatest hardship. When he also got COVID-19 while receiving chemotherapy (chemo), his battle with cancer became even more difficult.
As Susan remembered, “We felt a little numb. We just followed the procedures to complete the necessary tasks right away. Before switching to oral therapy, Jeff started with chemotherapy injections.
Jeff’s tumor started to shrink rapidly, suggesting that the medication was working. “They had a cocktail that worked, and it worked fast,” he said. The object simply collapsed. When the actor was exposed to COVID-19 at the treatment facility in January 2021, around one month after beginning chemotherapy, his condition deteriorated.
He tested positive at the time since the vaccine was not yet available. Because of his compromised immune system after chemotherapy, he was badly impacted by the virus. “I had no defenses. Additionally, Jeff acknowledged that “COVID made my cancer look like nothing.” His wife, who was heartbroken by his suffering, commented, “We didn’t know if he would recover.” He wasn’t the only one who had difficulty accepting his prognosis.

However, it was a difficult journey, and Jeff had to help him get better. “I was pretty close to dying,” he remembered. My mortality was dancing with me.
Jeff experienced a spectrum of emotions after being diagnosed with cancer and getting infected with the virus. “Fear wasn’t a real strong one,” he revealed. You know, it was primarily the sense of starting the program.
“I know I don’t want to die because one of the things that the illness brought to my attention is how much I love being alive…” Susan’s husband said after coming to a deep epiphany while he was ill. He said that fighting cancer and COVID-19 “exacerbated all these feelings of love for my wonderful family.”
He set out to increase his stamina, starting with his capacity to stand, with a 45-second initial time, because he was determined to walk his youngest daughter, Hayley, down the aisle. After that, he focused on progressively extending his walking distance.
His next objective was to carry his oxygen tank down the hallway, and he improved every day with a trainer’s assistance. He recalled, “Finally, one day I said, ‘Maybe I can do it, you know.'”
“And it turns out that I not only got to walk her down the aisle, but I got to do the wedding dance [to Ray Charles’s ‘Ain’t That Love,'” the actor joyously disclosed. That was fantastic.
He recovered from his condition after a year and a half, and he now cherishes his family time.
