Surprise Wedding: My Girlfriend Didn’t Wait for My Proposal!
My Girlfriend Didn’t Wait for My Proposal and Invited Me to Our Wedding
When my girlfriend gave me an invitation to my own wedding, I was even more shocked than when I saw her wearing the engagement ring I hadn’t even proposed with! Perplexed and offended by her boldness, I came up with a daring experiment to find out if Everly really loved me.

I became aware of it while Everly and I were eating dinner at my parents’ house. My jaw fell and my pulse quickened. Even though I hadn’t proposed yet, she was sporting the engagement ring I had purchased three months prior!
“Where did you get that?” I grabbed her wrist and asked.
Everly reddened. “Oh, the ring?” She lifted her hand and gave it a little wiggle. “I accidentally found it while dusting your drawer.”
“Oh?” My incredulity threatened to choke me, and I could hardly speak above a whisper. “You found it accidentally in a LOCKED drawer?”
She gave me a shrug, but it wasn’t the serious one that typically accompanied her removing my final fry.
“Yeah, kind of…” There was not the slightest trace of sorrow in her eyes as they glowed with delight. “But don’t worry, honey! Yes, I do! Together with our mothers, I have already selected the location, selected the cake, and even purchased my wedding gown. Everything is ready.
I sat still, unable of forming even a sentence, much less a logical thought.

She pulled something from her purse and continued, “And here,” “your invitation!”
In my hand, the little, tasteful card seemed heavy. I glanced over the text as I opened it, confirming that our wedding was scheduled for five days from now.
Five days! All I could think of was how I got invited to my own wedding when I saw my name written in gleaming gold letters.
I inhaled deeply in an attempt to quiet the storm that was building within of me.
“When exactly were you planning on telling me about all of this?”

As though I were fretting about a little issue, Everly waved a hand dismissively. Oh, I didn’t want to cause you any anxiety. Simply arrive in your suit, and we’ll have a lovely day.
The ridiculousness of it all left me unsure of whether to laugh or yell. Come in my suit? Did she see marriage as this? That I would simply coast through it, acting as the groom in her ideal wedding?
There had previously been warning signs in our relationship, times when I had questioned whether marrying Everly was the correct choice. I hadn’t proposed yet because of this.
Although Everly was usually enthusiastic, there were moments when I thought she was more enamored with the wedding concept than with us. And here we were now.
But I made a decision rather than blowing up. I suppressed my rage, straightened the card, and forced a smile as I nodded.
“Right,” I answered in a light-hearted manner. “All I have to do is give Chris a call. I need to confirm that my best man is available.
Everly smiled. “Excellent! I knew you would be overjoyed! This wedding is going to be the most incredible one ever.

Excusing myself, I entered the living room. The refreshing breeze from the terrace was a welcome diversion from the whirlpool of feelings roiling within me. As I called Chris, my hand trembled, but I forced myself to remain composed. Before he took it up, it rang once.
“Yo, what’s up?” Chris spoke softly, as though nothing could disturb him. It was just what I required.
I said, “Dude, I need your help,” while attempting to maintain my composure. “Everly’s gone too far.”
A moment of silence, then a sudden gasp for air. “What’s she done now?”
Chris, she located the ring. The one with whom I hadn’t even made a proposal. She has since organized the entire wedding without consulting me. I’m just meant to show up in five days.” I chuckled, but it was insincere. “She even handed me an invitation.”
Chris blew a little whistle. “Man, that’s… intense.”
Although I could sense the comedy in his speech, there was also a seriousness to it. Chris had a knack for knowing when to make a joke and when to just listen.
“I need to know if she’s in this for real, for me, or if she’s just obsessed with the idea of a beautiful wedding day.”
“You’re thinking about testing her, aren’t you?”
I checked to make sure I was still by myself by looking back at the home.

“Yes. If this is about us, I must check. Or perhaps it’s simply her notion of “the perfect day.”
Chris was the first to speak after a beat of stillness. “Alright, what’s the plan?”
I gave him an explanation. The concept was straightforward and dangerous, but it would show whether Everly genuinely loved me or whether she was just planning a lavish wedding.
The wedding day arrived sooner than I had anticipated. Everything went according to Everly’s plan. A string quartet played softly in the background as white flowers flowed down the aisle.
The guests were mingling and grinning, totally unaware of the ticking time bomb that was about to detonate.
Chris was shifting uneasily, so I stood with him just outside the ceremony area, straightening his bow tie.
He said, “You sure about this, man?”
I gave a nod. “If she doesn’t notice… then I guess that tells me everything I need to know.”

Chris firmly clapped me on the shoulder. “All right. Let’s get this done.
We entered together, but this is where my strategy kicked in. Chris took my place at the altar, rather than me taking the groom’s position opposite Everly.
Everly was waiting there, looking stunning in her dress. She looked at the flowers, the décor, the guests, everything but her groom, and her eyes glistened.
As I watched from a few feet away, a cold lump formed in my throat. My stand-in best man, Chris, glanced at me and nodded slightly.
To start the ceremony, the priest moved forward. Everly didn’t realize the groom wasn’t who she believed him to be because she was still too engrossed in the moment. I realized then.
I moved forward and gave her shoulder a light touch.
With a slight smile on her face, she turned, anticipating—well, I’m not sure what she anticipated, but it wasn’t me. Her eyes strayed from my face to Chris, who was standing in my place. Her smile wavered as the color left her cheeks.

“Wait… what?” Her features were obscured by bewilderment when she blinked. As like she was having trouble processing what was happening, her gaze flickered between us. “Ryan, what… why is Chris standing there?”
Now there was only the stillness of people whispering to one another and shifting uneasily in their chairs.
I said, “Chris will be standing in for me today,” as quietly as possible. Despite my racing heart, I made an effort to speak evenly. “It seems like anyone could’ve been standing next to you, so I figured why not Chris?”
Everly blinked once more, the bewilderment gradually giving way to anger and panic. Her well-groomed hands tightened into fists at her sides, and her breathing became shallow.
“What?” She spoke softly, her voice shaking with surprise. “Ryan, what on earth are you talking about? We’re getting married! Why would you harm me in this way?
I had anticipated the crack in her voice, and there it was. But it was more than betrayal or hurt. It was an anger I had never witnessed before, sparked by my incredulousness that I would dare ruin her ideal day.

It became evident then that this was her wedding, her occasion. Additionally, I had been made into a prop.
I calmly stated, “I’m doing this because you planned everything without me,” despite the flurry of emotions swirling inside of me. “Who was standing next to you didn’t matter to you. It wasn’t until now that you even noticed.”
For a brief moment, I thought I saw a flash of insight in her eyes as her face crumpled, as if she suddenly realized why I was doing this. However, that flash was immediately replaced by icy rage.

She trembled her bottom lip, but not because of regret. “Ryan, you’re destroying my — our — wonderful day. How could you?
I let out a sigh as the burden of everything finally fell upon me like a thick blanket. “Everly, you’re more in love with the wedding than you are with me.”
The words hit her like a slap and she gasped. Her eyes began to well up with tears as her cheeks reddened.

“I put a lot of effort into making this flawless. Her voice broke as she cried, “and you… you just….”
“Everly,” I replied softly, “I think you should reconsider your motivations. I really care about you. It wasn’t until I pointed it out to you that you realized your real fiancé wasn’t standing next to you.”
Her sobs reverberated in the silence of the venue as she turned and ran.

No one moved for a long time after the door banged behind her. There was a heavy, nearly intolerable tension in the room. However, beneath that tension, I had an unexpected sensation.
