Despite describing herself as female on her application, transgender woman Hunter Schafer, star of HBO’s popular series “Euphoria,” disclosed that her recently obtained U.S. passport wrongly lists her as male.
Despite choosing female on her application, 26-year-old Hunter Schafer, star of HBO’s “Euphoria,” was shocked to learn that her new U.S. passport wrongly shows her as male.
Schafer stated, “I was shocked,” while displaying the M marker on her passport in a recent TikTok video. She clarified that she was given an emergency passport that listed her as female when her purse was stolen in Barcelona.
But when she returned to the United States and asked for a new regular passport, it was issued with the male designation. Schafer credited President Donald Trump’s policies for the problem.
“Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government” was the executive order that Trump signed into law on his first day in office.
“As a result of this, which I wrote down because I wanna get it right, ‘The Bureau of Consular Affairs has frozen passport applications requesting a gender marker change or renewals or new applications within gender marker deferring from an applicant’s gender assigned at birth,” the actress said.
The White House issued the directive, which forbids the use of an X marker and requires that all U.S. passports show the biological sex assigned at birth.
Applicants who want a gender marker that differs from their birth record may encounter delays under these new rules, and those who are impacted may need to provide more supporting documents.
All newly issued passports must adhere to the current law, even if passports that include X marks or gender designations different from birth are still valid for travel until they expire.
Schafer expressed worries about possible challenges at border crossings because she plans to travel abroad. The practices that caused the inaccuracy on her passport were criticized by her. “I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen,” she stated.
Schafer acknowledged that at first, she disregarded the policy change because she thought it wouldn’t affect her personally. She did, however, recognize the wider ramifications for transgender people after witnessing the developments herself.
“I do believe it is a direct result of the administration our country is currently operating under,” she said in her video. “I guess I’m just sort of scared of the way this stuff slowly gets implemented.”
The actress isn’t discouraged by the possible travel issues, though. She reaffirmed, “It doesn’t change anything about me or my transness,” highlighting the fact that human identity is not defined by legal designations.
Regardless of restrictive policies, she expressed confidence that transgender people will continue to exist and be visible. Her words, “A letter and a passport can’t change that,”
Schafer’s path as a transsexual woman has been transparent. In middle school, she came out as lesbian, and in ninth grade, she came out as transgender. She found comfort in online networks as a child, which aided her in adjusting.
In an interview, she said, “The internet saved me — being able to go to YouTube and watch people’s transition timelines, and see myself on a screen,”
Schafer acknowledged the personal toll of being a prominent transgender person in her reflections on her public campaigning. She used to feel compelled to promote and educate others, but she has since changed her perspective to one that is more self-preserving.
“I’ve kind of lost interest in achieving some sort of utopia,” she said. “I have no problem with people calling me a man or detesting me because I’m transgender. I have lost interest in attempting to persuade them.
Rather, she places a higher priority on recognizing the resiliency of transgender people and surrounds herself with supportive networks. The star declared, “We are never going to stop existing,”
Schafer has pursued a variety of artistic endeavors outside of acting, such as directing. She directed the music video for the song “Why Am I Alive Now?” by Anohni and the Johnsons, and she has stated that she wants to concentrate more on her own artistic and personal development.
“It’s so awesome that I think I could continue doing acting for a while. However, she added, “I kind of put my life on hold and don’t want to let go of the many other things I want to do with it.”
Regarding her romantic life, Hunter Schafer revealed in 2019 that she might be close to a lesbian but did not elaborate. She has come out to permanently correct the record two years after the Dazed interview.

In response, Schafer stated that although she wished the post were accurate, she was regrettably not a lesbian. She claimed to be pansexual or bisexual.
One thing that all fans could agree on was that they all embraced and celebrated her despite her sexual orientation, even though her explanation did not resolve the issue and left them even more perplexed.
Rumors started to circulate in December 2020 when the actress spent a lot of time with Massima Desire. Schafer did not confirm or refute the many rumors that were raised about her dating life by seeing them together.
