Widowed Father Sells Family Farm for Son’s Future — But the Next Day, the Son Is Nowhere to Be Found

Poor Widower Sells Farm to Leave Son an Inheritance, He Disappears without a Trace the Next Day – Story of the Day

To enable his only son to pursue his goals, a widower farmer sells the land that has been in his family for many generations, and the next day, he vanishes.

The land was dear to Andrew Durham. It was ingrained in his DNA and blood. His pioneer forefathers had passed it down to him through the decades, having traveled west to Kansas in order to tame a wild area.

Andrew grinned as he held his son Peter in his arms for the first time. The family tradition was now certain to continue. Andrew’s son would inherit his heritage one day.

He never considered the possibility that his son might have quite different dreams.

The life of a farmer is difficult. As Andrew would tell his kid, it is a vocation, not a job, and the benefits are meager if a crop fails and the weather is uncooperative.

There is a way where there is a will.

Nevertheless, Peter had some early memories of riding on his father’s shoulders as he strolled through the towering fields of rustling corn, and Andrew adored it. It was then that Peter first heard the music.

Peter’s mother, Hannah, died when he was nine years old. A vein in her brain burst when she and a friend were shopping in a nearby town.

Andrew was later informed by doctors that Hannah had likely carried that aneurism in her brain like an unexploded grenade for the entirety of her existence. Andrew’s peaceful existence came to an end.

He had to continue raising their son on his alone when Hannah stood his ground. Although it wasn’t simple, Andrew and Peter gradually rebuilt their lives from the rubble of the previous one.

The following decade saw significant changes. Andrew’s neighbors began purchasing transgenic seeds, and as a result, their crops produced more and grew more quickly.

However, Andrew declined to employ chemical sprays or purchase the altered seed. He honored the land, the customs, and the seasonal cycles. Regretfully, the farm’s profitability began to decline.

Andrew was struggling to make ends meet by the time Peter was in his senior year of high school. “I was thinking that you could go to college and I could sell some of the outlying fields,” he said Peter.

“To work the farm more efficiently than I ever did, get a degree in agriculture. I’m confident you can make this better.”

Peter looked up and sighed as he finished his food. “Dad,” he continued, looking his father in the eyes, “you know I love you, and I love this farm, but I don’t want to be a farmer.”

Andrew gasped. He said, “Then…what?” “What do you want to do?”

Peter reddened. “You are aware of my passion for singing and playing the guitar… “Dad, that’s what I want to try to do,” he said. “I want to sing and write music, work with musicians.”

“But what about the land?” Andrew inquired. “Peter, our family has been here forever. “Always!”

Peter’s eyes were watering. “I love you dad, and I love this farm, but I want to follow my dream, and being a farmer is not my dream.”

Andrew had trouble falling asleep that night. He continued to turn and toss. Farming is all he has ever wanted to do. If his father had dreamed again, what would he have done? How would Hannah respond?

Andrew and his truck were gone when Peter awoke the following morning. When Andrew went to his church and told his pastor about his issue, the pastor’s response tragically supported his own judgment.

“We can’t decide our children’s fates, Andrew,” the pastor remarked delicately. “They have to go their own way, and it’s our duty to set them free and give them wings to fly away.”

Andrew questioned Peter that evening about his plans to fulfill his dream. Peter enthusiastically clarified that he already had a few sessions as a musician lined up.

“I have some songs I sent to a producer in Nashville, and he’s shown them to some singers…” he stated. “He wants me to establish some contacts and stay there for a time. He believes I have the potential to become a very popular songwriter.

“And how will you live, Peter?” Andrew inquired.

Peter smiled. “I’ll do what every other hopeful country singer does in Nashville!” he declared. “I’ll become a waiter!”

Andrew had another restless night, but he had a plan when the dawn came up. He formulated his plans after driving into town. He intended to offer his wings to Peter.

When Andrew returned home a week later, he handed Peter an envelope. There was a $450,000 check inside. “I sold the farm, Peter,” reported Andrew. “My father gave it to me to assure my future, now I want to assure yours.”

Andrew turned away and walked up to his room before Peter could respond. While holding his grandfather’s picture, Peter overheard him murmuring, “I’m sorry, grandpa, but I had to sell the farm, I had to set my boy free.”

Peter saw his father’s old truck was gone the following morning. When he walked upstairs to Andrew’s room, he discovered that his mother’s painting and his father’s clothing were missing.

He had lost his father! Peter saw the mail on the bed at that moment. There was a letter inside when he opened it.

He read, “My dear Peter,” “I no longer feel like I have a life. Grandpa Velly’s old cabin will be my new home. My son, be joyful. Realize your dream.

Peter was taken aback. This needed to be fixed by him. However, how? He drove into town after accepting the check. He knocked on Grandpa Velly’s old cabin door three days later.

“PETER!” said Andrew as he opened the door. Why are you here? I assumed you were headed to Nashville.

“I am,” Peter replied. “You’re returning to the farm as well. I persuaded the buyer to cancel the transaction and returned the money. My roots are as deep as yours, dad, and that’s my farm too. I must return to the farm and to you. No matter how far I go, I need to know you’re there.”

Peter went to Nashville, and Andrew returned to his farm. Andrew made the decision to try his hand at producing organic vegetables after doing some study, and it turned out to be a very successful venture.

When Peter decided to hold a country music festival there and persuaded all of his famous friends to play, the farm’s profits increased even further.

Andrew believed the old farm was dying, but it turned out to be a huge success and the location of one of Kansas’ most well-known music festivals. Who knows? Perhaps Peter’s son will like to work as a farmer someday.

What does this narrative teach us?

The destiny of children should not be decided by their parents. Andrew was surprised when Peter disclosed that he had a completely different desire since he assumed he would follow in his footsteps.
There is a way where there is a will.

Refusing to accept his father’s sacrifice, Peter used his chosen career to help the farm succeed.
