Cashier Learns She Owns a $3.8M Business after Finding Will in Her Name

A very unusual letter drives a woman to search for the truth about her past and end up with a windfall of money.

Gregory was about to leave the little shop he had worked at as a cashier for the last twenty years, closing the door as he went. Since his jacket was so old and worn-out, the breeze made him cold as he went home, but he still smiled. It was yet another wonderful day at work.

Gregory’s wife didn’t know why her husband enjoyed what she called an under-paying job. She thought he was too unambitious, so she left him, but he remained with their daughter.

Gregory came into their apartment building at the same time Linda was standing in the foyer. More recently, she started working as a cashier and usually wore her uniform. She was holding a letter in one hand.

What is that in your fingers, Linda? He asked as he got closer to her.

Gregory looked thoughtfully at the letter, then took it from her. A legal practice’s name was included on the envelope.

Gregory shrugged. He ripped open the envelope and looked at what was inside. He looked shocked and his hands started to shake while reading.

“It’s… strange. This letter says that somebody has bequeathed on you a business with three restaurants which is believed to be worth almost four million dollars.

“What!” Linda grabbed the letter from what was in Gregory’s hands. It seems like it’s definitely a scam to me.

Finding out is not hard at all. Gregory pointed out the phone number of the lawyer on the letterhead to Preston.

She contacted the lawyer and made a meeting for the following day. He walked with her around London.
When she got to the lawyer’s office, Linda told him, “I think this is a mistake.”

No one I have talked to would be willing to leave me a business.

The lawyer gave a little nod of his head. I am certain there is no mistake present here. Matthew Markham, my client, was very detailed in the orders he gave me.

Gregory thought it felt like a strong electric shock had hit him. May I hear that name one more time?

“Matthew Markham.”

He realized everything after that moment. He drooped his shoulders and cried.
Some time back…

Matthew was nervous and shook as he came towards the cashier. He put the gum on the counter and looked at the person who rang it through. His name on the nametag was ‘Gregory.’ He was exactly who should have been chosen for the job.

“Sir? Is everything okay with you?

“Fine.” Matthew noticed he’d missed the question and gave $5 to the cashier. I have something I really need to tell you. It concerns the story of Linda.

The man turned quickly and met the customer’s gaze after he said her name. Is her problem serious enough for her to hide?

Gregory and Matthew decided to meet at a diner near Workspace at Gregory’s lunch hour. He took some time while waiting to remember the things that made him realize what he had to do.

Just a few days ago, Jeremy and he had discussed his illness and Jeremy found out that the restaurant business would go to inactive family members who did not run the place.

Jeremy later revealed that Matthew hadn’t met his daughter because she was was born before they met. His former partner had passed away while having their child and the baby ended up being placed up for adoption.

As soon as he heard she was missing, Matthew hired a detective to look for her. It wasn’t until a few days later that he was having a meeting with Gregory, his daughter’s adoptive parent.

Matthew told Gregory that he was the biological father of Linda and then asked the question he wanted to know most.

Does Linda have any idea that she was adopted?

No and you’re not allowed to mention it to her, sir. Gregory looked at Caspian beckoning with his eyes. Linda’s offer for a home is so important to me, because my wife left me a few months ago. Do not make me lose her.

Matthew was uncertain. He hoped to understand his daughter, but didn’t wish to make things difficult for the man who’d looked after her. He also wanted to avoid bothering his daughter by coming into her life when his time on earth was almost done.

Gregory smiled. I think she is fantastic. She treats everybody kindly and with the same respect.”

Matthew nodded. An idea was slowly appearing in his mind.

After that, Matthew pretended to be a penniless person and went to a store where Linda was a cashier. They ended up getting only a few items and waiting for her to scan them.

He apologized to her when she mentioned the price.

I don’t have the money for that. The most I have is ten dollars.

Don’t pay attention to it, sir. Linda flashed her husband a happy smile. I’ll finish the work by doing the rest.

He returned to the store a week after walking out. His suit looked especially sharp this time as he put it on. Again, he picked some of the store’s biggest ticket items and presented them to Linda at the register.

Shouting “Move aside” and shoving others, Matthew reached the front of the line. I don’t have a lot of time and would like to be served fast.

He arranged the things he bought in front of Linda and waved vigorously to get her attention. Come on, hurry, I have an important meeting to go to.

Mr. Markham had a special thing he wanted. He asked that I hand you something.

He left the room and shortly came back with a bunch of yellow lilies which he gave to Linda.

Linda held the flowers in her arms. I see what you mean. She looked at Gregory. One day, he came to me and asked that I would think of his name when I see yellow lilies.

He put his hand gently on Linda’s shoulder. Your father was very proud of what you’ve done, Linda and he’ll be proud of you for many years to come from heaven.
