I Thought I Knew My Fiancé Until I Saw ‘You Picked the Wrong Guy, Gave Him the Wrong Finger’ on His Car One Morning
I thought I knew who the perfect man was and we had arranged our wedding, when I saw those words written on his car: ‘You picked the wrong guy, gave him the wrong finger.’ At that time, all the things I thought about him suddenly became uncertain.
Real happiness makes you simply enjoy and trust your life, without expecting any bad outcomes. Ethan and I had just shared our engagement and now we started slowly discussing wedding plans.

A smile was always on my face, as I thought how lucky I was. Everything I hoped for in the kind of man I would end up with, Ethan was. I waited a great deal of time for this kind of love to come.
Everyday things like breakfast together were a big part of our routine. Each morning I got up before Ethan, cooked and then woke him so we could drink coffee, eat eggs and plan the day.

That morning was just the same as all the others. I was busy steam cooking pancakes when the doorbell suddenly rang. Strange. No one was supposed to be there.
I opened the door and saw Megan, the neighbor we have across the street. Her brother Jay was the one who was with her during her life.
Megan liked to gossip and was very curious about other people which I did not like, yet I was able to deal with her. Jay was polite, kind and always well-mannered whenever we met him.

I said, “Good morning,” in a steady voice.
Megan looked at me with a kind of sympathy. I am truly sorry, Rachel.
I felt my stomach fall. “Sorry? For what?”
You have just gotten engaged and this is taking place so soon after? It sounds very painful.”

Excuse me? I frowned. We are perfectly happy together.
She looked in the direction of the street behind her. I thought maybe you were aware of this. I’m talking about the message that’s left on your fiancé’s car. It doesn’t always feel very joyful either.
I felt a sudden surprise. “What message?”
Megan hesitated. You need to check it out to really see what it does. And she left the scene.
I went back inside, shut off the stove, slipped on my sandals and went outside. I checked his vehicle to see was there anything unusual. There were no clear problems when I saw the bag from the front and back. The moment I tried to go to the passenger door, I found myself in a distressing state.

It came into view. Across the doorway and windows: ‘The wrong guy, got him the wrong finger.’
My mouth became very dry. I thought the idea must be some kind of joke. A joke that is not funny and hurts people. There was a weird sensation in the air. We never had anyone who was our enemy. I had thought that we weren’t doing that.

I ran back into the house and went upstairs to our room. Ethan was under the blankets, still asleep.
“Ethan!” I put my hand on his shoulder and shook him.
“Hm? What’s wrong?” he mumbled.
Have you looked to see if your car is outside today?
He gave me a brief and surprised glance. “My car? No, why?”
“Ethan!” I put my hand on his shoulder and shook him.

“Hm? What’s wrong?” he mumbled.
Have you looked to see if your car is outside today?
He gave me a brief and surprised glance. “My car? No, why?”
Is there anyone who might be responsible for this? I asked.

He looked up and shook his head counter to what the others were saying. “No clue.”
So how can someone decide to write something like that?
I do not know what happened,” he said. It’s possible the police got the wrong car by mistake.
I pinched my eyebrows together. Don’t you have any secrets from me?

He looked at me right in the eyes. Nope, obviously not. I love you very much, Rachel. Keeping up a lie with you would never happen.”
He leaned forward, kissed my cheek and went inside.
You remember I thought we should have put on security cameras? He rushed on and I chased after him.
So, I got a new thought. Megan’s house. There were cameras showing views of the street.

He was at the table already when I entered the room.
Will you phone the police about this? I asked.
He looked up and shook his head counter to what the others were saying. “No need. It’s possibly a simple joke gone wrong.
I pushed my tongue against the side of my cheek. “Okay.”

“I have to get on the bus today,” he said and went to get ready. I will see you tonight. He gave me another kiss and then he was gone.
I got changed and went over to Megan’s apartment. The door opened up for Jay.
I said, “Hey . I have to tell you that someone damaged Ethan’s car last night. Can the cameras see where our driveway is?
Jay nodded. She explained it to me when I talked with her. Please enter, let’s examine the video together.

Of course she cared enough, I told myself. Megan talking non-stop.
Jay took me over to the computer. We studied the clips taken from the night before. At around 2 a.m., a hooded person showed up on screen, spray-painted the message onto the car and left quickly. It was impossible to tell what their face looked like.
Jay sighed. “Sorry. It’s difficult to know who it was.
I instead said “Thank you anyway.” Thank you for what you did for me.
Jay hesitated. Is it possible for me to ask… do you actually think someone was joking with us?”

I could see he was looking at me. Can anything else really explain what happened?
Jay looked right into my eyes. There was something personal in the message. In the same way someone tries to share something with you.
Are you thinking that there’s something Ethan isn’t telling us?
Jay shrugged. I am not sure. You yourself will be married to him.
I didn’t feel good when I got home. As soon as he came home that day, Ethan was cleaning his car. As soon as the message was sent, he went back into the house.
Are you completely sure there’s nothing you want to say to me? I asked him the same thing again.

He smiled. You are great just the way you are, babe. Since the car is now clean, the test is finished.
I wasn’t able to fall asleep. Near midnight, he got a message on his phone. I wish I hadn’t, but I looked anyway.
Let’s arrange to meet after we are both finished at work the following day. There are things we must talk about.’ Address is also very important when you send a package. I put the address into my phone’s memory.
He told Sofia the next morning that he had some work to finish at the office later on.

There is a lot for me to manage at this time,” Richard said.
I told her, “All right.” I’ll just order something to eat myself.

He smiled. “Sounds good.”
My mind did not stop thinking all day long. Jay’s words. The message. That text. I was not able to turn away from these beliefs.

As soon as I was finished with work, I drove to the given address. Ethan had arrived ahead of us. I parked opposite the place and gazed through the window. Within the car were Ethan and a woman.
The papers were laid out between them and they were speaking in a calmand peacefulway. Nothing romantic. I waited. Time passed. Nothing happened.
After some period, Ethan excitedly stood and walked away. I drove rapidly home, aiming to arrive before him. I got there with moments to spare.

As he drove into the parking spot, I was peeking through the window. But in no place near our home. No. He pulled up outside Megan and Jay’s place for the dinner date.
Everything clicked. Naturally, it was Megan who solved the problem. She explained the message she found on the car and I could tell from her eyes how envious she was of Ethan’s proposal to me. He was cheating on me right there under my eyes!
Wearing darkness like a cloak, I crept towards their home and kept silent the whole time. I wanted to see him doing it. I stood directly below the window and strained my ears.

I saw no choice but to do it, Ethan said. You must have realized that things would never last. I said straight up that Rachel was to be my bride.
Her voice was not the same voice I expected and hoped to hear that day. It was Jay who I heard.
Even so, you said that you loved me, Jay replied.

I suddenly felt sick in my stomach. I covered my mouth to try to stop yelling loudly.
I’m sure my family would never be able to accept me, Ethan said to himself.
“You need to be open and visible in order to live your life,” Jay remarked. It’s impossible to fool Rachel for very long.
Ethan answered,”We can still get together every now and then.”

What?! Entering the room, I my voice rushed in with Jay’s.
Ethan froze. What’s going on isn’t what you think it is.
Doesn’t it look different than that?! I screamed. I gave you my trust! I always cares for you a lot! You lied to me again and again!
It wasn’t something I had much say in! I’m okay with it and so are you!”

Ethan, you’re not supposed to marry someone just because they are easy to get along with!
He moved into the line. If you would, please, forgive me.
My answer was “No.” Make sure you take all your important things with you. You’re done.”
“Rachel, please.”
I wish to marry a partner who wants me and loves me. Not a woman who desires a new man in her life!
My personal identity has nothing to do with any blame on my actions. he shouted.

I’m not angry with you because you are gay!” I cried. That is a fine reason to have one. It was all a lie and it’s your fault the life together was fake!”
“Rachel, please, I am begging you,” he said as he came closer to me.
“Get all your things together, Ethan,” I told him.
We didn’t speak as we walked home to the house. I opened the door and let both of us together. Even though my hands kept shaking, I kept a calm attitude. It was necessary.

He dropped his keys on top of the table and looked at me worryingly. He said to himself, “I am going to gather my belongings.”
I didn’t give a reply to his text. I stood still and quietly watched as he loosely filled his bag with things from the room.
I propped myself against the doorframe, crossed my arms and watched everything happening. I asked myself to commit the image to my mind forever, so betrayal would always be clear to me.

Ethan secured the duffel bag and just stood there quietly before looking at me.
“Rachel…” His speech was full of unsteadiness. “Please. Be careful, don’t do this. We can figure out a way to cope. Please just allow me to try again. I messed up, but we are through it all as a team now. Doesn’t that help you in some way?
For a moment, I looked at him and I could see the man I used to love. Yet only for a short period.

You made your life out of lies, I said, speaking softly. I am not interested in a marriage that leaves me wondering all the time who you’re with and what home truths you are secretly keeping from me. Honesty is what I need. Love is what I wish for. Real love.”
“Rachel, please, I am begging you,” he said as he came closer to me. I can guarantee that I will start doing better. I will improve. I am ready to do whatever you want. Whatever you do, keep it and don’t throw it out!

I did not throw it away, I told them. “You did. When you first decided to lead two lives.
But you were the one who made me feel protected, he quieted.
I nodded. It made me feel stupid, too.
He looked down at the deck. So that’s all there is to it?
Yes, I did that. Clean up your things and leave.
He was still there for a little more, feeling down. When the door opened, he got up, got his bag and set off for the door slowly. Not saying a word, he closed the door and went outside.
I was all alone in the house, still with my arms crossed. I had never felt such anger such emptiness. The silence was the loudest thing in the room.

A minute or two after it happened, there was a knock at the door.
I told you to leave before! I opened the door, shouting loudly and did not take the time to look.
None of this was caused by Ethan. It was Jay who was there.
Oh, I said, surprised to hear that. “Sorry. I thought you were somebody other than…
I knew the person you thought I was and I brought some tea,” he said while presenting a box of tea. “I just… I wish to say I’m sorry. I should have mentioned it earlier to you. I had a lot of fear.”
I looked at the freshly made tea. “Well. I finally have the real truth now.

Jay nodded. Would you like something to relax your mind?
A burst of laughter escaped from me. Something much stronger than tea will be necessary.
He gave a little smile.
Come inside,” I told him.
Jay was walking in when and as I closed the door, I understood he wasn’t the only person in the house. Not anymore. Yes, I had just lost the man I was supposed to marry, but I had also gotten something better. Myself.
