My Fiancé Disappeared With the Money We Saved for Our Wedding — That Same Day, Karma Hit Him Hard while I Ended Up Rich

Exactly one month before our wedding, I found that my fiancé and all our money were no longer there. No note. No explanation. Nothing but an empty closet and no dream fund. As I dialed the police, my phone rang and that phone call changed the situation.

The hardware store wasn’t one of my stops for romance that Tuesday. I was trying to get a heavy box of curtain rods down from the highest shelf without accidentally dropping them on myself.

Can I give you a hand?

The sound was close, but coming from the back this way, a hint of amusement in it. I turned and noticed a guy carrying a plumber’s wrench in his back pocket and showing a smile that made me feel all warm inside like in a lovey-dovey movie.

Unless crushing with home supplies is what you’re hoping for, yeah,” I answered.

He reached up and lifted the box without any effort.

Might be easy for you if you do it this way. That same smile appeared on his face as he gave it to me. My name is Daniel.

“Sarah. I’m grateful that you prevented me from having a very awkward obituary.

He laughed. What was it trying to explain?

The tense morning raced by in a haze of tissues, angry words and shock.

The love of my life was somebody I could not trust. The future that meant so much to us was all built on nothing solid. He just took our dreams and left which hurt more deeply.

At the same moment, I was preparing to call the police, it rang on its own.

Hey, I came with good news. I saw your bag sitting at the train station only ten minutes ago. Are you planning to visit to get the item?

“What bag?” I expression confusion.

A black duffel was found. The look of the place is old. There is a tag on the phone that has this number printed on it.”

The thought made me feel ice-cold.

The duffel bag. The weekend bag I got in college which I hadn’t used in a long time. It seems likely that Daniel forgot to check the tag after putting everything in his bag which is why my old phone number stayed there.

I told him I would be right over.

I went to the station in a hurry, with my heart beating fast and worried.

I found the same gentle-looking man as I saw before, this time carrying my battered bag.

“This yours?” he asked.

Nervously putting the weapon in my hands, I nodded back. Many of the items in the filing cabinet were bills. The money we got at our wedding. All elements of it. Untouched.

Located the device on a bench an hour before the call. It’s great I spotted the phone number on the ad.”

I stood there looking at the money, wondering what this all meant. He had pocketed the money and then gone away? I guess it must have slipped out of sight in his hurry to board the train on his way to a new home.

Just hold up, he said, while taking a good look at me. Are you Elena and Sam’s blood relative?

My eyes went up sharply without notice. It must have been years since I heard either of my parents’ names. I was still a little girl when they were killed in a car accident, when I was ten years old.

How did it happen that you… and who are you anyway?

His gaze became friendly. I am Marcus, I was an old friend of your father’s. I saw you last time at the funeral. You are just as pretty as your mother.

He gave me one of his business cards. Why don’t we meet in my office sometime? I’m interested in hearing how you are doing lately.

I got the card as I began to grasp everything that had just happened. “I… I do not understand.

We began our work lives as partners many years ago. He was a nice person. My mind has often gone back to wondering what happened to you after…”

Following their deaths.”

“Yes. I regret how much time has gone by since we last spoke. Young people live in foster care, right?”

I only nodded, not saying a word.

Perhaps, he said, the universe wants to give us a new shot.

About a week later, I met with Marcus and we discussed stories and memories of my parents with a cup of coffee. I learned from him new details about my father’s life such as what his consulting firm would have looked like.

I was hoping to speak with someone who has your sort of experience. Examining retail results and improving the process. Do you wish to invest in an area with more opportunity for growth?”

I landed a real job two weeks after that. Not retail. Not living close to the margin. Something other than another paycheck, in terms of being respected and having a secure future.

As luck changed for me, it changed for Daniel in the opposite direction.

Everyone in our small town found out quickly.

Daniel had been arrested on charges of attempting to go into hiding which was to dodge some previous debts. It appears she ran into gambling debts.

We would have used the money from the dream fund if it hadn’t fallen out by accident.

When I told him, Marcus replied: “It doesn’t take Karma long to work its magic.” Certain individuals end up creating their own detentions.

What he predicted was true.

While Daniel was handcuffed and involved with lawyers, I stood in my office, happy at the opportunities in the city around me.

I had kept my dream fund in a new lockbox at home. Because of this, I had a fresh goal to set my sights on.

Often, the person who causes your pain is simply making room for the better future you’re supposed to have.
