Away from the glitz and glamour of award presentations and venues that were completely sold out, Reba McEntire worked her way up to become a country music royalty.

Having been born in McAlester, Oklahoma, and having spent her childhood on the enormous ranch that her family owned in Chockie, she was brought up in a world that emphasized tenacity and early responsibility.

Although she was only five years old at the time, she was already familiar with the rhythm of ranch life, since she was already driving her father’s truck across broad fields while propped up on a grain sack.

There were times when Reba longed for words that were gentler or for emotional warmth, but those instances were uncommon.

Nevertheless, she flourished in a childhood that was surrounded by her siblings, Alice, Pake, and Susie, who shared a small two-bedroom home with a single bathroom and an unending love that was disguised as punishment during her upbringing.

By infusing their childhood with tunes and pushing them to sing on lengthy rides from one dusty rodeo arena to the next, their mother, Jacqueline, who had once thought of pursuing a career in music, brought melodies into their lives.

A great spark was ignited within Reba as a result of such encouragement. Eventually, she became a member of the family trio known as The Singing McEntires, where she discovered her voice through participation in school recitals and talent events.

The siblings worked on perfecting their harmonies by practicing them around the kitchen table with their mother serving as their guiding coach.

They did this until their vocals flowed together as easily as their stories did. In the course of her education at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and subsequent graduation from Kiowa High School, Reba experienced a turning point that was completely unexpected.

Her voice drew the notice of country singer Red Steagall in 1974, while she was singing the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo.

This was the beginning of a series of events that eventually took her to Nashville. Reba drew into her mother’s unshakeable belief that she had been born for something greater, despite the fact that she was experiencing nerve injuries.

From that point on, Reba has transformed her upbringing in the countryside into a foundation that is robust enough to withstand fame, heartbreak, and the process of reinventing herself.
