My Husband Mentioned He’d Be Working on Valentines Day, Then I Discovered Him in a Restaurant

This Reddit member got to experience firsthand how his husband would consistently put his mother above his wife and child. The husband broke a deal he and his wife had made to exclude his mother from their lives due to something heinous she had done to their infant daughter.
On Valentine’s Day, 2024, a married 31-year-old lady posted on Reddit about how her spouse told her he would be working that day. Sorry, the spouse of the original poster (OP) said, his supervisor had called and asked him to work an extra shift because they were short-staffed.

Despite being annoyed, the Reddit member claimed that she was able to accept it because she and her spouse didn’t do anything special on the day other than watch films and snuggle. She nevertheless let it go, even though that year was different because they had a daughter who was six months old.
The OP disclosed that her spouse had been employed by the same organisation for nine years, with his regular workday and lunch break being from ten in the morning to eight at night. The Reddit user revealed that her car was in the shop and wouldn’t be ready until February 16th, but the mechanic phoned her at approximately 11 a.m. to come pick it up.

OP drove to a petrol station with a little restaurant inside after walking to the shop with her baby daughter because it wasn’t too far away. She was shocked to see her spouse’s truck outside since he worked 45 minutes away from the company in the other direction.
Because of his regular and fixed schedule, the OP pointed out that it couldn’t have been his lunch break. The fact that OP and her husband had resolved to have “no contact” with her mother-in-law (MIL) a month prior startled her when she stepped inside and saw him sitting with his mother.

The choice was taken following a slap to the face, leaving a red mark, from the grandmother to her young granddaughter, who had bit her arm during teething. After asking her husband how his job was going, OP approached their table. He got up and said, “I’m sorry, I just wanted to have lunch with my mum for Valentine’s Day.”

The Redditor questioned her husband about having lunch with the “witch” who had smacked their young daughter across the face. She gave him the all clear to have his lunch and not to go back home because he could stay with his “mommy.”

Later, the husband’s mother contacted her to express her displeasure that he and his mother were receiving ugly stares from the two couples seated nearby. He went on to say that one of them screamed and exclaimed, “Oh my God,” and that his mother sent OP some dirty looks.

Her spouse trailed her to her car after the meal, saying, “It’s not like I’m allowing her around our daughter.” It was “pathetic,” he said, because he shouldn’t have to lie about eating lunch with his mother.
“So he tells you lies. concerning his mother visit and his job.”

She was then reprimanded by OP’s husband for making fun of him in front of the entire restaurant. After answering him and reminding him that hanging out with a child abuser should humiliate him more, she got into her car and drove off.
She discovered that OP’s husband had given her a gift when she went into their joint bank account and saw that a $400 purchase had been made from her MIL’s preferred antique store. The single mother blocked the account because she believed she should have received more than half of the funds because she worked a full-time job and made $9 more per hour than her spouse.

Livid, the original poster, was upset that her husband had promised to stop talking to her mother-in-law but had then lied to get rid of her and their daughter on Valentine’s Day. She was upset and wanted to hang out. But the woman’s friend said she was being too dramatic and that instead of confronting him in private and alone, she ought to have left the restaurant.

The person who made the correction clarified that she ultimately left with her infant when her mother-in-law abused him. When the mother of one and her husband urged the older woman to go, the older woman allegedly started an argument with OP, leading to the mother of one leaving instead.

Perversely, her spouse informed her that he contacted law enforcement, who obtained a statement. He then claimed that the police had decided not to pursue the matter, calling it a “word of mouth” incident. OP, though, was starting to wonder that he would ever call the cops.

“This is more than just ‘lunch’ with his mum,” a Reddit member said in response to the original post. In some way, he needed to make up for the 45-minute travel from home to work at 9 a.m. and the 45-minute drive back at 9 p.m. Thus, he is still lying to you. Not a bad idea. Why does he believe that he is worthy of “consideration”?”

“NTA” First of all, dumping your wife for your mother is very wrong as today is Valentine’s Day, not Mother’s Day. Second (sic), go meet with a lawyer & create an account solely in your name for your paycheck,” a Reddit member said.

“Amazing. There were some unexpected turns in this tale. When I read the second paragraph, I realised the true problem, even if at first I thought you sounded a little passive aggressive about Valentine’s Day (sic). To your face, your spouse lied. Furthermore, he may have been the worst husband you could have chosen when he lied to you on Valentine’s Day. Although I believe the bank account freezing was a bit excessive, $400 is a significant sum of money, so I suppose I can understand. It’s clear that you are not the [expletive]. You guys need couple’s counselling,” said someone else.

Most people agreed that OP wasn’t incorrect to react negatively to her spouse deceiving her and seeing his mother behind her back. It was even believed by some that these were grounds for divorce!
