Mother-in-Law Mistaken for Maid — Story of the Day
When Delia, an affluent young man’s girlfriend, gets home, she discovers an unidentified woman settling in her kitchen. Delia does not hold back while using derogatory language, assuming this woman is a new maid. When she finds out who the woman really is, what will happen?
Thomas’s mother, Mildred, was busy baking cupcakes in her opulent kitchen. With her hair pulled back and an apron around her waist, she had a modest but attractive appearance. Thomas’s girlfriend Delia entered the room dressed elegantly. The way Mildred was dressed, she assumed she was a new maid.

“Pardon me, could you please? I was unaware that we had a new maid,” Delia remarked angrily.
Mildred pivoted, examining her son’s selection with her eyes. “Good morning,” she said in a courteous tone.
This is not the type of stuff we eat. “Thomas and I place a high value on our health,” Delia remarked, mockingly lifting one of the warm cupcakes. “You should probably ask before baking such things!”
Mildred merely smiled a little and said nothing. After then, Thomas entered, delighted to see his mother and the cupcakes. “You’re up early, Mom! These appear fantastic.” He took a cupcake and ate it all up.

When Delia found out Mildred was Thomas’s mother, she was astounded. “That’s your mother?” she inquired, looking shocked and ashamed.
Thomas grinned broadly and replied, “Yep, and her cupcakes are the best,” cupcake crumbs trailing down his mouth.
Mildred, meanwhile, just sipped her coffee, a knowing smirk curving over the corners of her mouth. She said, “I’ll leave you two to catch up; I’m tired.” and walked out of the kitchen.
Upon Mildred’s departure, Delia faced Thomas. Why didn’t you let me know that your mother was in town, Thomas? In any case, she treated me rather badly.”
“Crude? Mom?” Startled, Thomas enquired. “Perhaps you made a mistake. She is not cruel.
No, Thomas, there isn’t a miscommunication. That sight in her eyes was so dehumanizing. I felt so little and devalued.”

Thomas made an effort to soothe her. I apologize if you experienced that. I will speak with her. She merely needs some time to warm up to you.”
Delia desired acceptance from Thomas’s family, and Thomas pledged to assist his mother in realizing her own greatness.
Mildred, in the meantime, was dejected as she heard their talk from another room. It was evident to her that Delia was after Thomas’s money.
Thomas, Mildred, and Delia met for lunch at noon. The translucent drapes in the dining room let in warm, natural light, and the table was arranged beautifully. In an attempt to pique Thomas and Mildred’s interest, Delia spoke about fashion.

A moment later, Thomas nudged the conversation in the direction of their family’s retail apparel company. “Talking about trends in fashion, Mom, the upcoming summer collection is almost done. This time, we’ve added some striking patterns.”
To promote the new collection, Delia proposed implementing a marketing concept she saw on Instagram, but Thomas and Mildred didn’t think it suited the aesthetic of their company.
“Delia, social media is really strong. However, the reputation of our brand has been based on a particular grace and ageless appeal. Vibrant isn’t always in line with our brand image,” Mildred said tactfully.

“Yes,” Thomas continued, “we try to strike a balance between creating trends and preserving the timeless appeal of our brand. In the fashion sector, there are delicate lines.”
As they chatted more about business, Delia felt excluded. Then Thomas broke the important news. “Mom, Delia and I need to talk about something really serious. I’ve made the decision to propose to Delia,” he declared.
Though shocked, Mildred regained her composure immediately. “That’s quite the news, Thomas,” she cautiously answered.
Delia felt ecstatic. “Mildred, isn’t it wonderful? We’re overjoyed,” she grinned.
“Obviously. For a celebration, how about some wine?” Asking Delia to fetch some wine from the basement, Mildred spoke.
Yes, Mildred,” Delia answered.

After the woman left, Mildred looked at her kid. “Thomas, I have to voice my worries. You don’t believe it’s going by too fast? You don’t really know one another.
Thomas justified his decision. “I adore my mother. That’s what matters, isn’t it?” he questioned.
Mildred was concerned that Delia might be marrying him for the wrong reasons. Delia had gone outside to retrieve the bottle of wine. However, feeling angry and taken aback, she stood behind the door and listened to Mildred and Thomas’s conversation instead of going directly to the table.
Thomas was warned by Mildred to use caution. Love ought to be about more than just making money.”

The suggestion hurt Thomas’s feelings. He questioned, “You think she’s after my money?”
All Mildred wanted was to keep him safe. “Your mother is me. My job is to be concerned,” she remarked softly.
When Delia realized they had doubts about her motives, she was astonished and alarmed. Attempting to conceal her dismay at hearing Thomas and Mildred discuss her, she entered the dining room carrying a bottle of wine.
To Mildred and Thomas’s surprise, Delia had also come back with something else, something she had been keeping hidden so she could use it as leverage at the perfect time. She set the little covered plate down beside Thomas.
“And now for the culinary highlight of the day,” she exclaimed, gesturing to the meal with gusto. Her eyes glistened with a mixture of fear and excitement, drawing all eyes to her.
When Delia opened the plate, she saw two red lines on a small plastic stick-like device instead of a delicious meal.

“Thomas, we’re having a baby!” she exclaimed.
Thomas’s countenance changed from surprise to happiness. He got up from his chair and gave Delia a tight hug.
“Con-congratulations,” was the only response Mildred could manage.
She wasn’t happy, even though she should have been. Before approving their marriage, she insisted on a prenuptial agreement because she was concerned Delia wasn’t the proper girl for her son. Thomas was displeased since he had whole faith in Delia.
Mildred added that she would only provide Thomas management of the family company in exchange for a prenuptial agreement. After all, SHE had put years of arduous labor into building it. Being a single mother, achieving this goal required not only a lot of labor but also many sacrifices.
Tell me what you decided. She said, “I think I need some air,” and walked out of the dining room.
Following Mildred’s departure, Delia and Thomas discussed their options. With a kid on the way, Delia was concerned about how they would make ends meet without the business. Thomas assured them that their love was more important than the business and that they would figure something out.

Later, with Mildred’s remarks still ringing in his ears, Thomas was getting ready for a shower when he looked over and noticed Delia’s pregnancy test on the edge of the sink.
Out of pure curiosity, he picked it up and dropped it into the sink’s water by accident. He grabbed the test and quickly turned off the faucet, but as he did so, he noticed something strange.
He discovered that the red lines were made with a marker when they began to smear. Delia had made up her pregnancy.
Thomas froze for a brief period. After his shock subsided, he made the decision to put her to the test. He told them at dinner that in order to save money, they should sell the house, live simply, and possibly even get regular jobs. Delia objected to the concept and was surprised. After dinner, Mildred had departed early for her room.
“We are unable to sell the house, Thomas. It’s our house,” an irate Delia remarked.
“I understand, but things could get tight with a baby on the way and me perhaps losing the business. We must have a realistic mindset. Perhaps you could also get a job to assist. Something along the lines of a waiter or even a housekeeping position,” Thomas said, seeing her response.

Delia became enraged and accused Thomas’s mother of causing their issues. “Your mom is attempting to manipulate us. We ought to manage the company without her,” Delia remarked. “Consider it. You’re able to get away from her. Give me full ownership of the company. Without her hovering over us, we can manage things together.”
Thomas looked astonished. “Give the company to you? My family has always done it,” he retorted. “My mother has spent her life building it.”
Delia issued a warning to Thomas. Thomas, it’s either me or her. “Select me or I’ll walk away,” she declared.
Thomas feigned agreement. He said, “Okay, I’ll transfer the business to you,” covering his true intentions.

Delia’s face brightened into a triumphant smile. She took a step toward Thomas and put her arms around him in a triumphant hug. Thomas, you won’t regret doing this. Together, we’ll be unstoppable,” she said.
Delia boasted over the phone to her friend the following morning about defeating Thomas and his mother. “I’ve completed it at last. I’ll own the company!” With happiness, she said.
She discussed how her pregnancy hoax worked and how she intended to become pregnant in real life in order to keep her job. “Mildred will have no voice after I acquire the business. Now is my moment,” she declared, triumphant.

The door was suddenly knocked on. Cutting the call short, Delia flung the door open to reveal a guy in uniform, solemn and formal, flanked by a group of men who radiated power.
“My name is Patrick, Miss. “We are here to initiate the asset attachment process,” the man declared, holding out a legal document for her. “There are a lot of overdue taxes on the business that Thomas transferred to you. You’re facing severe legal consequences.”
In a panic, Delia attempted to buy off Patrick in order to solve the issue. Would you kindly allow us to discuss this in private? As the other men carefully went through the house identifying furnishings and valuables, she said, “I’m sure we can make a deal.”
“How about Thomas? Will you put him under the bus to further your own interests?” Patrick enquired.

Delia said she merely wanted Thomas’s money and that she had never loved him.
“Everything was a charade to seize his possessions. “I’m confident that we can come to an agreement,” she admitted, panting. “Come on, how much do you want?”
Patrick seemed to consider the proposal. “So, you’re offering financial incentives, and perhaps more, to make this go away?” he gasped. “Is that what you hear, too, Thomas?” Patrick yelled.
From their hiding spot behind a door to an adjacent room, Thomas and Mildred emerged.
“Y-you set this up?” Startled, Delia realized.

Thomas gave a nod. He remarked cynically, “Meet Patrick and his team of actors, love.” “Like your pregnancy test, Delia, the business transfer paperwork was phony. I think you should use a permanent ink marker the next time you pull this prank on an unsuspecting fool.”
Thomas turned down Delia’s plea for another chance. “Go! Thomas forcefully stated, “I can’t be with someone who doesn’t love me for who I am.
Thomas apologized to Mildred as Delia departed. “Mom, I apologize,” he said. “You tried to warn me, and I didn’t listen.”
He was reassured by Mildred that mistakes are OK as long as they are learned from. Thomas, that’s just a fact of life. We develop, learn, and live. Would you want to bake some cupcakes? She added, trying to lighten his mood, “It’s been eons. “I… guess this moment calls for something sweet?”
Thomas thought the idea was good. With a smile, he replied, “Just like old times?” “Sure, let’s do it!”
Thomas rolled up his sleeves and prepared to get to work as soon as they walked into the kitchen. “All right, Chef Mildred, I’m available to help. Playfully, “Let me see if I can still remember how to do this,” he remarked.
With a giggle, Mildred gave him an apron. Thomas, it’s similar to riding a bike. Actually, you never forget. She gave a supportive smile. “Now, let’s see if we can still make the best cupcakes in town.”

A delicious smell filled the kitchen as they baked. While waiting for the cupcakes, Thomas and Mildred conversed and exchanged anecdotes at the kitchen table. They were reminded that they had each other and that was all they needed to overcome any challenge during this straightforward baking session.
