I Caught a Nanny Leaving My House on Her Day Off – She & My Husband Lied to Me about the Aim of Her Visit
When Kate gets home early from her trip, she is shocked to learn that Ella, the nanny, has left her house on a day when she wasn’t meant to be there. Ella and Kate’s husband, Dan, provided inconsistent and unsatisfactory answers when questioned. What was the true reason for the unannounced visit?
Dan, my spouse, and I have been together for almost ten years. Three lovely children have graced our family: Lucy, six, Ryan, four, and our newest, one-year-old Abbie.
I’m a wedding photographer, and Dan is a university lecturer. I have to travel for work, sometimes even internationally.

Ella, our nanny, has worked for us for the past two years. Ella was sent to us by my sister and a few of her friends, and we never experienced any issues with her. She’s been amazing, and the kids love her. She’s also really gorgeous, which I didn’t think was a problem until a truly unsettling night.
Ella was there when I returned from a vacation earlier than expected; she had sneaked out of our house at ten o’clock. Her presence seemed strange to me because it was her day off.
“Ella, how are things going? Was there anything that Dan needed you for? I walked up to her and asked.
She turned, startled and with wide eyes. “You’re home early, Kate! Oh my!” No, nothing is wrong. My phone was just inside. Stupid of me, huh?
I nodded, but something kept pulling at my thoughts.
Dan was glued to his phone as I walked into the house and sat on the couch. He grinned when he saw me. “Oh my goodness, you returned early. How did your travels go?”
“It-It was fine,” I answered, my thoughts still racing from what I’d witnessed outside.
“Dan, why was Ella here today, on her day off?” At last, I questioned him. “I saw her leaving just now.”
His grin vanished. She wants to lend a book, I see. Indeed, a book,” he answered.
I scowled. “A book?”
It was nonsensical. It seemed to me that they had something to hide. However, I also knew that if they were having an affair, they wouldn’t accept the truth in the absence of proof, so I didn’t want to look foolish by accusing them without any evidence.
So I went into Dan’s office the following day, while he was at work and the house was silent. I felt bad about questioning him, but I couldn’t get rid of the uneasy sensation.
I discovered a black box there, concealed on a shelf within a cupboard. Panicked, I opened it.

There were two smaller boxes and balloons that said “Happy Anniversary” inside. When I opened that, I saw two wedding bands; one was thinner and more plainly fashioned for a man, and the other was more delicate and feminine, meant to go well with the first.
Tears and confusion overcame me. Was there another woman that Dan was seeing? An additional family?
I had to know when Dan came home that evening. I had the open box on our living room table when he came in.
“What’s this?” I pointed to the box and asked. “Be truthful with me. And why did Ella show up here last night?”
Dan’s smile vanished, and he momentarily froze, fear flashing in his eyes. He groaned then and took a seat on the couch.
“I wanted to surprise you, Kate,” he replied, glancing in my direction. “Our anniversary’s coming up, and I wanted to do something special.”
Shock sent my hands flying to my mouth as my eyes started to flood up with tears. As I gazed at him, the puzzle started to come together.
You know, I made reservations at a beautiful restaurant. I then reasoned, “Why not renew our vows?” A small ceremony to express my love for you, unchanged from our first meeting ten years ago.”

“However, Ella? Why had she come here?” With trembling, I asked.
“I needed Ella’s help, which is why she was here,” he said. “To oversee the children at the celebration. She promised to come in the evening to talk about everything even though it was her day off. I instructed her to keep the plan a secret from you and even paid her in advance. I became upset and lied since I didn’t think you would be home.”
I felt so bad for not believing Dan. I held his hands softly in mine as I sat next to him.
Feeling sorry for myself, I said, “I’m sorry, Dan.” I ought to have put my faith in you. When the stories started to falter, I became really afraid. Ella told me she had forgotten her phone when I asked her why she was here.

Dan grinned and shook his head. “Kate, don’t worry. I recognise. All this preparation seemed a little bit hidden… I cherish you.”
“I love you too,” I answered.
After that, he gave me an embrace, and we cuddled for a short while. We reaffirmed our vows a week later, promising to rely on and stand by one another through thick and thin.
Although it wasn’t the surprise Dan had planned, it was nonetheless ideal for us. And I gained important knowledge about love, trust, and the significance of having faith in the person you care about.
