After her husband passed away, a devastated mother refused to fulfill his final request to give their daughter his letter. She is now questioning if doing so was the right thing to do.
Three years ago, a woman used Reddit to question if it was wrong for her to withhold something from her daughter that her late husband had wanted her to give to the young woman.
She began her message by stating that in 2019, her husband’s brain tumor was determined to be incurable by medical professionals. The man was given only six months to live by the doctors, yet he persevered and lived for nine months after receiving the news.
The father began writing letters to his two daughters—along with his wife—a few weeks after receiving his diagnosis. For every important event in his daughters’ lives, he penned a letter, which he asked his wife to deliver to the girls on that particular day. The letters’ author, their father, was unknown to the girls.
How Was the Letters Used by the Woman?
The woman said that her spouse, with whom she had been in a relationship from childhood and wed at the age of 18, was her soul mate, and that she had found it difficult to accept his passing. The woman revealed:
“On Mia’s wedding day, my husband composed a letter for her to read. Notably, my girls were not aware of these letters.
The widow claimed that although her husband’s death had caused her great pain, one positive outcome was that she and her daughters had become closer and more reliant on one another.
Their oldest daughter married a man she had been seeing for six years, years after her husband passed away. The woman expressed her affection for her daughter’s spouse and stated he had helped the three women get over their loss.
The late guy wrote a note to his daughter for her wedding day, which he left for her. When the time came, though, the woman could not bring herself to leave with the letter. She explained:
After reading that, all I wanted to do was keep it to myself. It felt like he was there, and I couldn’t bear [sic] the idea of giving that up just yet since I had his handwriting and his words.”
The mother excused herself by stating that she had intended to give the letter to her daughter until she saw it. However, she made the decision that rather than giving it to her daughter on her special day, she would prefer to keep it for herself.
What took place when the daughter discovered the letter?
The woman stated that her daughter and her husband had purchased their first house and were packing up their belongings from her house, where they had previously resided, a week prior to sharing their story on Reddit.
The woman’s daughter inquired about the whereabouts of all her vital paperwork while they were packing. The woman informed her that the paperwork was located in the uppermost drawer of her dresser, obliging to mention that the drawer also held the letter from her spouse.
The woman had stashed away all the other letters, leaving only that one in the drawer. The mom revealed when her daughter pulled out the drawer:
“She immediately recognized his handwriting, and of course, it was addressed to her, so she read it and broke down.”
When the woman’s daughter saw her again, she yelled at her for keeping the letter from her and asked how her mother could be so self-centered. The woman offered her daughter to snap a photo of the letter instead of responding, saying nothing more than that she wanted to retain the letter.
She was eventually confronted by both of her children, who thought she was being terrible and that she was hiding much more from them than just the letters. She posed the question to Reddit users: was she really at fault?
Numerous people corrected her, stating that her daughters were the rightful recipients of the letters because they had been addressed to them rather than to her. People felt the mom was selfish and her daughters were justified, calling her a thief.
The woman requested that people cease sending her direct messages and death threats because of the intensity of the hurtful remarks she was getting. Since then, there have been no new developments about this case.
