Served Cold: When Karma Had the Last Laugh on My Father-in-Law

My Father-in-Law Humiliated a Waiter, but Karma Struck When He Least Expected It

My father-in-law’s greed drove him to raise a disturbance in a restaurant, bringing tension and conflict with him. But little did he realise that the karma of his deeds was about to humble his ego with an unforeseen turn of events. What began as a man attempting to acquire what he wanted became him discovering an important life lesson that had escaped him for a long time.

At the risk of coming across as too dramatic, I’ve always thought that there is karma. The adage “what goes around, comes around” comes to mind. But I never imagined that it would happen the way it did, or as quickly, as it did one evening with my father-in-law (FIL), Benjamin.

The premise of this man, bless his heart, is that the entire cosmos, in all its cosmic majesty, revolves around him and is ultimately meant to provide for all of his desires. And karma chose this very day to make him face truth.

Allow me to describe the scene: Linda, my husband Sam, and I were out to dinner with him at a neighbourhood eatery Benjamin insisted was the “best in the state.” He’s the type of man who puts in orders like he’s ready for a food crisis—four burgers, fries, the whole thing!

After our waiter brought us our lunch and left, our patient server came back to the kitchen. Little did my FIL know that this would be the beginning of an epic story of instant karma.

As soon as the returning server realised there was a “missing” burger, Benjamin exploded like a volcano, and we watched in dismay as his face was painted with dismay and wrath. “Four burgers was my order. “Why are there only three?!” he yelled, drawing unwelcome attention from across the table.

The ever-patient server reassured him, quite nicely, “I made sure I put them all in the bag, sir.”

“Are you blind? Just three remain.” His condescending voice broke through the din of patrons inside the restaurant.

I was about to speak up at this point to support this poor woman who was merely trying to go about her job, but my husband knew his father would simply take off in a phoney rage and cause more of a commotion. Knowing that I couldn’t bear to see anyone treated unfairly, he gently took hold of my hand and urged me to keep quiet.

Sam’s instincts are always right, especially when it comes to his father, so I retreated and took a seat, observing the spectacle.

The server apologised, realising that Benjamin was one of those irrational customers who thought they were always right. “Sorry, Sir,” she said. “I’ll fetch you an additional one,” yet her response indicated that she was positive she had brought all four.

We sat there staring at him in contempt as the innocent woman left to fetch my avaricious FIL a fifth burger, but we kept quiet so as not to escalate the conflict. Benjamin appeared temporarily satisfied with the waiter’s suggestion, a black cloud of a smirk growing across his face.

He had no idea that the universe was going to give him a GIANT helping of humility!

When we finally arrived home, the smugness soon gave way to complete terror. When my FIL realised his wallet was missing, his face became white as a sheet! Tension increased as he looked about wildly, his thoughts going back to the restaurant.

With knowing looks, my spouse and I were surrounded by silent thoughts.

Strangely, when my FIL contacted the restaurant out of desperation, the same waiter answered! You could almost feel the serenity in her voice when she stated that she had found his wallet! However, the news had a significant twist that he hadn’t anticipated.

The waiter told him about the odd policy of the restaurant, which my FIL had always made fun of on the menus and walls of the establishment: any lost items that were not claimed within an hour would be given to a charitable organisation!

It hit him like a goods train, the realisation! He informed us, “I think they gave away all my money, we need to go back,” as soon as he hung up the phone. To be honest, I thought justice had been done when I saw him in such distress and terror, but that was just the beginning!

When we returned in a hurry to the restaurant, we encountered the height of irony. With a victorious smile on his face, the waiter gave him an envelope from the nonprofit and thanked him for his “kind donation” before serving him a “free beverage.”

There were receipts inside, showing how the money in his wallet bought dinner for a number of the homeless that night!

A rare moment of humility replaced the customary pomp and circumstance as silence fell around him. My spouse used this opportunity to politely bring up his father’s behaviour, which started a sincere conversation about thankfulness, respect, and the consequences of our deeds.

When we reached the safety of the car, he reminded him, “Dad, you know what you did to that waiter was wrong, and it’s probably why you forgot your wallet at the restaurant.” “You always have this idea that you can do anything you want and there won’t be consequences,” Sam said.

“You know that’s part of the reason why Mom isn’t with us today,” he continued, tears welling up in his eyes.

My spouse was talking about how Benjamin came to live with us when his wife, Sam’s mother, filed for divorce and seized everything. Diana was a kind and kind woman who would have given anything to Benjamin, but my FIL cheated on her on multiple occasions.

She shared a folder and video of years of private investigations she’d done on her husband to show his guilt when she finally had enough of his entitlement and took him to court. She had been aware of his adultery during their marriage, but she had only once or twice confronted him, at which point he arrogantly revealed to her:

“I am the MAN in this household, and I don’t have to answer to YOU!”

But when she went for a divorce and won everything, he really “answered” to her before she sold everything and moved abroad. She only spoke with Sam and me through texting and occasionally video calls.

For everyone involved, especially my FIL who had never admitted to confronting the personal and direct repercussions of his entitlement, it was a terrible but therapeutic event. A turning point was reached for my FIL and our family as a whole, not just because of the restaurant event but also because of Sam’s passionate confrontation.

The man who had earlier personified entitlement and arrogance learned a clear and profound lesson from karma, which inspired him to make a change. He started a volunteer adventure and made connections with the homeless individuals who had profited from his death, whom he had previously ignored.

Once contentious gatherings, our family dinners have evolved into times of deep discussion and laughter. My FIL, who had previously been a cause of conflict, now serves as an example of the transforming power of empathy and kindness.

And there you have it: An account of how a lost wallet and a “missing” hamburger helped us all learn the priceless lesson that no generosity, no matter how tiny, is ever wasted on the cosmos. In its most poetic form, karma served as a reminder that genuine fulfilment can only be reached through humility and compassion. It was also a lesson that my FIL learned just in time.

While Linda’s account of how karma eventually made her FIL understand, illustrates how sometimes it takes time for people to receive the lesson, this other story will make you stop before you make a foolish decision that you’ll later come to regret.

Sarah’s Narrative of Her Dad’s Bad Karma Will Cause You to Second Guess Yourself Before Reacting

In a timeless story of dinner drama transformed into a karma jackpot, John, a Reddit member, describes going out to eat with his then-fiance, Sarah, and her, um, not so great father. Imagine our marriage, a little restaurant, and the father who has a habit of choosing his new family over Sarah.

When Sarah asks for a to-go box for her leftovers, Dad offers to pay the bill as the evening draws to a close. At first, this seems like a kind gesture, but then dad makes a snide comment about wasted fridge space. John enters as always the dazzling hero.

“Hey, that’s not your fridge to worry about, leave her be.”
But boy, does that make Dad uncomfortable! With a dramatic “FINE!” he storms out, tossing the bill at John in a tantrum. Sarah, poor thing stuck in the middle, is mad with John for starting the fire. This is when the universe chooses to add some spice to the situation.

The waiter admits they are in the middle of a “every bill’s a winner” game while they wait for the bill, tensions running high and Dad watching from the outside. Usually, there’s a free appetiser or drink waiting on you, but not this evening. John and Sarah won a vacation for four to sunny Florida tonight, all thanks to karma’s decision that Dad’s leaving was the ideal time for a big prize win!

Our pair so discovers that, on occasion, sticking up for those you love can not only strengthen your bond but also possibly win you a trip. Regarding Dad, let’s hope he’s gained some insight into kindness and perhaps—just possibly—will receive a postcard from Florida. Here are four additional stories, similar to Sarah’s, for those who are loving the speed at which karma works!
