From Fired to Famous: The Single Mom and Her Secret Weapon
Boss Fires Single Mom on Maternity Leave Not Knowing Her Oldest Son Is Top Lawyer
Maria was enjoying a fantastic new job and an unexpected romance, and she felt like she was living the dream. When her resentful boss chooses to fire her, everything collapses.

Maria gave her son Lucas a tearful embrace. “My dear, you have my undying admiration! I could never have predicted that you would succeed in life when I found out I was pregnant with you. And now, congratulations on your law school graduation—magna cum laude!”
Lucas gave her a sardonic smile. “Wow, you make it sound like I was hopeless,” he said.
Maria gave him a friendly arm smack. You understand what I mean. I was still a child at only sixteen. Lucas, you bring me delight and pride despite the challenges of being a young mother, and I acknowledge that I made many mistakes.”

After giving Maria a cheek kiss, Lucas tousled her hair. Their connection was peculiar because she had completed community college and high school while he had grown up in his grandparents’ home. They had once been getting ready for school at the same time, almost like siblings.
“I’m going to miss you.” Maria sighed. “I’m happy you have a job already, but I wish you were staying here, not moving to the city.”
“I’ll pay you another visit. You know, it’s only a one-hour drive.”
As they strolled hand in hand through the well-kept grounds of the institution, Maria grinned at him. The air smelled clean and pleasant as the sun beamed down. Lucas could not have asked for a better day to begin the rest of his life.
After a span of five years, Maria entered the large organisation where she had been employed just a short while before. Even though Maria was forty years old, she felt as though she was starting over because she had devoted so much of her youth to raising Lucas.

When she met Allen, her new boss, the feeling struck her quite sharply. She shook his hand and felt electric fire rush through her, her eyes refusing to leave his lovely face.
“Maria, it’s great to have you on board,” Allen remarked. “I loved your resume, and I have a feeling you’re exactly what we’ve been missing around here.”
“I’m glad to be here and to be working with you. This is pretty much my ideal job, to be honest.”
Maria melted as Allen smiled. He muttered something else, but she ignored it since she was admiring his well-groomed beard and the way his arms moved under his shirt.
Allen went on, “Let me show you to your office.” “You’re right next to me, so I can keep a close eye on you.”
Maria’s heart fell out of her chest when he gave her a wink. She needed to take control of herself! He led her down the shiny tiled corridor while she forced herself not to stare at his behind. Maria had no desire to become involved in a romantic liaison at work. She didn’t want to be one of the too many pals who had suffered that fate.
Maria quickly came to understand that the heart pursues its impulses regardless of how foolish they may be. It didn’t help that Allen didn’t wear a wedding band or that she frequently caught him slyly observing her.
Over morning coffee, it began with bashful smiles and lighthearted jokes. Their legs frequently scraped under the table while they collaborated on suggestions. Up until the day Allen brought Maria into his office to give her an update on a significant project, none of it seemed serious.
“We got the contract!” At her, Allen smiled.
Maria’s ideal position at the company swiftly turned into a nightmare.
Although their embrace was impetuous, an uncontrollable rush of happiness over their mutual achievement, once they were in each other’s arms, neither Allen nor Maria wanted the moment to stop.
“I apologise,” he said in a low voice, “but we shouldn’t.”
She said, “Yeah,” her eyes meeting his.

She could feel his heart pounding just like hers had since they were thus near. His perfume overwhelmed her senses with the scent of wood and leather. His fingers followed the curves of her face with a firelike precision.
There was beauty and pyrotechnics in that first kiss. He dragged her in closer, and her insides went like cotton wool. It was the beginning of a brief but intense relationship that transpired behind closed doors in various hotel rooms and offices throughout the area. Something unanticipated put an end to Allen and Maria’s burning, passionate love.
“You can’t be pregnant.” With his head buried in his hands, Allen slumped over.
“We can make it work, even though we didn’t plan for this baby,” Maria replied, placing her hands on his shoulder.
“No, we can’t.” Allen got up and started to walk about his workspace.
“Marija, I love you, but we have to stop doing this. I’m married, so we can’t be together.”
Maria fixed her gaze on him. The globe appeared to have stopped spinning. “But, you don’t have a ring…and no family pictures!” She pointed to his desk and blurted.
“I prefer to keep my business and personal lives separate,” Gesturing through his hair, he muttered. “I apologise, but I believe this will leave us both wiser than when we started. I mean, everyone makes errors, right? Naturally, I’ll cover the termination costs.”
“No!” Maria crossed her arms across her abdomen. “I’m not going to do that, Allen.”
Allen’s face was shadowed darkly by anger. Maria, you must use caution in this matter. Carrying this pregnancy to term will be a grave error.”
“The only mistake here is you.” Maria bounded through the door. She was in shock that she had been abandoned for the second time in her life by her child’s father!

Some of Maria’s worst days were to come in the ensuing months. When she told her parents she’d been left with a kid once more, the look they exchanged broke her heart. She also couldn’t bear to inform Lucas that he was going to become a brother. On social media, he appeared to be very content. How could this revelation cause her to shatter that illusion?
Maria’s ideal position at the company swiftly turned into a nightmare. Allen stopped collaborating with her on proposals. Rather, he left her to complete the task by herself. After reading everything over, he would send the drafts back to her with pages of notes on the things she should have changed. Because of this, she ended up doing every task three times.
“By the time I’m finished with them, that jerk boss of yours will never be able to get another job.”
She was unable to communicate with him at all, not even about matters of business. He would dismiss her and advise her to send an email, but he would typically disregard it. His attitude worsened as soon as Maria appeared.
“Congratulations!” Amy, the accountant, grasped Maria’s hand. “I was unaware that you were wed. At what time—”
“The Johnson proposal needs to be finished today.” Allen suddenly materialised and hurriedly escorted Maria back to her office.
Maria whispered, “I wasn’t going to say anything about us,” to him.
“The office is a place for work, not small talk!” Red in the face, Allen finally snapped.
When Maria’s due date drew near, Allen did little to ease her workload. Rather, he overloaded her with work and frequently made crude remarks about how she had caused things to happen. Even though Maria frequently returned home in tears, she was hesitant to inform Lucas that she was expecting.
Allen stormed into her office one day, fuming at the most recent proposal she had worked on. As he yelled at Maria, a stabbing pain began in her lower back. When Maria’s water broke, he was about to leave the room and gave her the command to finish the work again.
“The baby’s coming!”
They hurried Maria to the hospital. Riley, a healthy boy, was born to her after a brief but difficult labour. She had considered placing the baby for adoption, but after seeing Riley’s adorable face, the idea left her mind.

A few days later, Riley was brought home by Maria. Her six-month maternity leave had given her ample opportunity to spend quality time with her infant and keep track of Lucas’s activities on social media.
The Monday after, Maria had a painful shock. Her employer called to inform her that she had been let go! Allen had dismissed her for subpar performance since she had never revised the plan that he was yelling at her about when she went into labour.
Maria started crying. She was crying so hard that she failed to see the man who had come inside her home.
“Mom?” Lucas hastened to join Maria. Mom, why are you crying? What’s not right?”
“Lucas! Why are you in this place?” Maria gave him a startled glance.
“I came for a surprise visit.” Lucas’s eyes widened, taking in everything in the room, including the infant in his mother’s arms.
However, it appears that I’m the one receiving a surprise. “Which infant is this?”
While Maria was telling Lucas everything that had occurred to her, Lucas’s chest constricted with fury. When she was done, his hands were balled into fists and his blood was boiling.

“It’s illegal to fire you when you’re on maternity leave,” he stated. “By the time I’m finished with them, that jerk boss of yours will never be able to get another job.”
“You fear that your little, dark secret may be discovered. When I take you to court, the judge is going to find this to be quite interesting.”
“Lucas, don’t.” Mother hung her head. “I couldn’t live with the scandal this will cause.”
“Mom, I’m not going to allow him get away with mistreating you. In addition, I’m now a big brother. My duty is to keep that tiny guy safe.” Lucas gave his sibling a firm forehead kiss and gave his mother a hard hug. However, I swear to keep my distance. Simply give everything to me.
With a sad heart, Lucas ascended the stairs leading to the company where his mother had formerly worked. He was deeply ashamed that she had opted to bear these responsibilities by herself rather than reaching out to him. The way she’d been treated also made him feel disgusted.
Lucas whispered, “You’re about to get the surprise of your life, Allen,” as he stepped into the lift.
Lucas was sitting by himself in the rear of a boardroom one hour later. All except one of the conference tables in the middle of the room were packed by top executives and stockholders of the company.
Allen walked into the room and everyone’s attention fell on him. When he noticed that everyone was still staring at him, he apologised for being late and appeared perplexed.
“Is something wrong?” After taking a seat, Allen enquired.
“Mr. Walsh, please review the documents in front of you,” the CEO of the business commanded.
“You’ve been accused of illegal job termination.”
“What?” Glancing through the pages, Allen blanched. “This statement is false! That woman was sloppy and lazy, so I fired her. It had nothing to do with her getting hit up.”
After clearing his throat, Lucas got up. “I beg to differ, Mr. Walsh.”
Lucas was smiling uncontrollably as he observed Allen writhe as he gave his introduction and stated his qualifications. After reading the entire room the law, he insisted that Mom be given back her old employment and paid for the emotional suffering she had experienced.
“No way.” Allen gave a headshake. “She was fired because she failed to do her job well. The remainder of this is unimportant.
Is it not accurate to say that she went into labour and was unable to finish her work? Probably from the tension you brought on by yelling at her, Mr. Walsh?”
“Now hang on a second—”
“And is it not true that she wouldn’t have fallen pregnant if you hadn’t had an affair with her?”
There was a collective gasp in the boardroom. Allen’s cheeks glowed scarlet.
“You are guilty of egregious misbehaviour in addition to illegal firing. Isn’t it the true reason you wish to fire my mother? You’re afraid that your little, dark secret may be discovered. When I take you to court, the judge is going to find this to be quite interesting.”
Allen hung his head. He needed not to say anything more, therefore he said nothing more. His face showed his shame to everyone to see.
That same day, Allen lost his job. When the directors of the company saw how much of Allen’s work Maria had finished, they not only got her back, but they also gave her a promotion to Allen’s job.

Lucas, Mom, and little Riley rejoiced. To be nearer to his family and be able to commute to the city when needed, he made the decision to move back to the town.
What lessons may we draw from this tale?
- A devoted family will support you no matter what. Lucas and Maria hadn’t talked much lately, but when he found out she needed assistance, he was prepared to stand up for her.
- Always defend the moral high ground. Every nice deed and every second we spend pursuing justice makes the world a better place for everyone to live.
