Wedding Drama: MIL Wears White and Steals Spotlight, but I Got the Last Laugh at Her Wedding

Jim and Tina were irritated when his mother attempted to get involved in the wedding preparations after Tina became engaged. Tina has enough time to plot her own retaliation before Beth surprises the couple on the wedding day with a personal statement.

Jim’s mother, Beth, promptly interfered after we became engaged. She inundated us with her opinions from the first day.

“I have so many ideas for your wedding, Tina,” Beth replied. “I’ve been planning Jim’s wedding for years now!”

Jim told his mother, “But this isn’t just my wedding, Mom.”

She dismissed him with a wave and carried on talking passionately about floral arrangements.

That’s when I realized that if I wanted to be involved in my own wedding, I would have to close it down.

“Your mom will tone down, right?” When we went for a walk one day, I asked Jim. “This won’t turn into a physical altercation? It’s not necessary for me to advise her to back off.”
Jim laughed and gave me a handshake.

He added, “My mother is a lot, love.” “She is not dumb, though. She’ll follow the cue.”
Naturally, though, Beth ignored the warning.

She wanted to talk to me about the venues, the flowers, and even the cake, so she asked to meet at a coffee shop.

As she sipped her coffee, she remarked, “Vanilla is the timeless option.” “Avoid chocolate and, worst even, peanut butter. Also, avoid making bare cakes. They lack cuteness.”

“Look, Beth,” I murmured. “I appreciate all your input, but everything I have planned has been discussed with Jim.”

She still wanted my approval, though, and went on to show me a photograph of the purple outfit she intended to wear.

I had no idea that this was only the beginning.

On the day of our wedding, Beth showed up wearing a full-length white silk gown as I was finishing my makeup for the aisle walk.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“Beth? Startled, I inquired, “What are you wearing?” “A gown of white? The purple one you showed me is where?

She gently turned to face me and touched up her lipstick in the mirror in my dressing room.

My sister yelled out from the doorway, “Tina, come on.” “It’s time!”

Before leaving the room in front of me, Beth winked and grinned.

I ought to have been thrilled. I was about to tie the knot with the love of my life, but Beth’s arrival had been the height of impoliteness.

That was all we desired, and the ceremony went off without a hitch. However, my heart wasn’t feeling well despite Jim’s flawless vows and the musicians playing the soundtrack I spent weeks creating.

I was deeply hurt by Beth’s treachery, and it was affecting my entire wedding experience.
My spouse remarked, “I know this is a lot for you.”

“However, we still have the entire evening to rejoice and party. My mother did something absurd, and I will talk to her about it later. But let’s simply enjoy our day, Tina—come on.”

Jim was attempting to talk me out of my head, so I had to give it to him. I also realized that I had a duty to attempt to put his mother’s actions behind me.

Still, Beth wasn’t finished.

Beth announced her engagement to her longtime lover to the DJ during the reception by taking the microphone.

The icing on the cake came when she came up to me right before our first dance with Jim.
With a sly smirk, she asked, “You thought that you’d be the most important person here today, didn’t you?”

Jim said, “I’m so sorry about my mom, honey,” when we were having fun. “She simply… doesn’t know when to stop being who she is.” She must get proficient with using filters.”
“It’s okay, Jim,” I told a lie. “Let’s just focus on our dance.”

I was aware that all eyes were on us in the room, and the more Jim and I talked about it all, the more likely it was that I would lose my cool in frustration.

But I was furious within. I made the decision to exact my revenge right then and there.

It was Beth’s turn to marry George, the man who genuinely attempted to make her more human, a year later.

I was eager to see how she would respond to what I had in store. Jim had made it his particular goal to rectify the situation between Beth and myself following our wedding.

And I gave it permission. Because I had practiced my phony friendship with her during those months, and I had also carefully prepared my counterattack.

As I was doing my hair the night before, my husband said, “Are you ready for Mom’s wedding tomorrow?”

“Yes,” I answered. “They didn’t want anything big or fancy, so it should all go exactly as planned.”

That was my way of saying that it will happen the way I planned, not Beth’s.

Beth’s forehead twisted in perplexity and rage when she observed the wave of white-dressed guests at her wedding.

She snapped, her gaze darting across the room before returning to my white dress, “Why is everyone wearing white?”

“Oh, didn’t you read your own wedding invitation?” I answered innocuously. “We thought it would be a beautiful, unified look for your special day, Beth.”

My mother-in-law took a sharp breath.

Her brows narrowed and she shouted, “You did this on purpose!”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I replied. “I’m just trying to make your day perfect, Beth.”

While the ceremony continued, my mother-in-law was clearly enraged and struggling to remain calm.

It was time for our speech during the reception. Jim and I grabbed the mic.

“Beth, your wedding day is truly beautiful, and you look stunning!” I started, my smile growing. “Jim and I wanted to take this moment to share some exciting news with everyone.”

With a smile, my spouse took hold of my hand.

He said, “We would like to announce a baby!”

The audience exploded in cheers and congrats. Beet red was Beth’s expression, a mixture of shock, rage, and realizing we’d just upstaged her.

Poetic justice, that was.

Afterwards, as the audience started to disperse across the venue, a furious Beth came up to me.

“Were you planning this? The announcement and the white dress code?”

“All I wanted was for everyone to appear put together on your special day, Beth. I am aware of your need for everything to match precisely. Regarding the baby news, we were eager to inform the family,” I answered.

She spit out, “You know exactly what you did.”

“Just like you knew what you were doing at our wedding?” With a stern gaze but a lovely grin, I shot back.

Naturally, Beth didn’t know how to react to that. She stormed off, and I felt like I had won.

Surrounded by supportive family and friends, the remainder of the night was a whirlwind of jubilation. Jim started establishing boundaries after realizing how bad his mother had been acting, which made our lives a lot simpler.

“When the baby is born,” Jim replied, “my mother will know exactly where she stands.”

As we were finishing our pancakes the next morning, Beth called. Jim and I exchanged a quick look as we tried to determine who would accept the invitation and pick up the phone.

My spouse surprised me by putting a forkful of food in his mouth. When I picked up the phone, I was prepared for Beth to give me a hard time, but she shocked me instead.

She said, “Congratulations on the baby.” “I hope we can move forward from here.”
Jim nodded at me with a stuffed face as I smiled at him.

I said, “Thank you, Beth.” “We hope so too.”

It wasn’t really about getting even with Beth in the end. It was about establishing a standard that would prevent Beth’s whims from controlling our lives. I was ecstatic because it was a win-win situation.

We are now holding out hope that Beth will stay in her lane as we wait for our baby to arrive.

How would you have responded in that situation?
