Midnight Encounter: Lonely Old Lady Finds Runaway Boy Begging for Shelter
Lonely Old Lady Finds a Runaway Kid in the Middle of the Night Begging Her to Take Him in— Story of the Day
Elderly Lili comes into a shivering kid named Harry on a chilly evening. Harry begs Lili for help, desperate and alone, and Lili’s kind heart can’t say no. Lili takes a courageous stance and starts a path of hope and rescue as Harry discloses the appalling realities of his foster home.

Late in the evening, Lili, an elderly woman with kind eyes and silver hair, walked slowly home. She shivered in the chilly night air and pulled her coat closer around her.
She noticed a little figure snuggled up against a lamppost as she rounded the corner. The youngster, who seemed little more than ten, had disheveled hair and wore a tiny jacket that offered minimal protection from the chilly weather.
The child said, “Excuse me, ma’am,” his voice quivering. “May I accompany you home? It’s quite chilly, and I have nowhere else to go.”

Lili felt sorry for him. The despair in his eyes was visible to her. “Obviously, my love,” she uttered softly. “Let’s get you out of this cold.”
She took the boy Harry to her modest but comfortable house. The chilly night outside provided a sharp contrast to the warmth within.
Lili led Harry to a chair by the hearth so he could get cozy. She made a hot tea and some cookies while rushing about the kitchen.
She handed him a platter of recently baked cookies and a steaming cup of cocoa, saying, “Here you go, sweetheart.” As Harry took a bite and tasted the sweetness and warmth, his eyes brightened.

Lili, concerned for Harry’s safety, grabbed up the phone and dialed the police as they sat by the fire. As they waited, Harry started to confide.
He muttered, “I live in a foster home.” “There are too many of us in a small room.” His speech was tremulous.
Harry filled her in on what he knew. He even made an attempt to locate the house so Lili could assist other children.
Lili whispered, “Oh, my dear,” her heart aching for him. “No child should have to go through that.”

Harry refused to let go of Lili’s hand as the cops came. She lowered herself to his level and looked at him with comfort and affection in her eyes.
She whispered softly, “Harry, you have to go with them now.” “But don’t be alarmed. I’ll come see you tomorrow with more of these exact cookies. Everything will work out OK.”
Harry reluctantly nodded and released her hand. Lili stared from the doorway, her heart heaving as the police brought him to Child Protective Services. With all her heart, she hoped that she had made the right decision and that Harry and his pals would receive the support they required.

The sun was shining softly through Lili’s kitchen window the next morning, and she sat at her little wooden table, thinking about Harry. With shaky fingers, she called the number for Child Protective Services. A few rings later, a female voice responded.
“Child Protective Services, how can I help you?”
“Hello, Lili is my name. Harry, the small child I took in last night, was taken to your office by the police. Wanted to see how he was doing.”
The other end of the call hesitated for a moment. “Oh, Harry, I see. After we investigated his situation, his foster family received him back. No indication of inadequate care was present.

Lili felt her heart sink. However, he informed me of the appalling circumstances. He was covered in bruises. Has anyone given him a complete check-up?”
“Ma’am, sometimes children exaggerate,” the woman stated in a condescending manner. “We adhered to the procedures we had in place. The foster family reassured us that everything will be alright.”
Lili scowled as she got a strong sense of resolve. “Would you please provide me with the foster family’s address? I just want to be certain that he’s really alright.”

The woman firmly said, “I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose that information.”
“Please,” Lili pleaded, her voice trembling in fear. “He might be in real danger.”
“I apologize, ma’am. Nothing further that we can do.”
Lili hung up, feeling helpless and irritated. She was unable to get rid of the sensation that Harry needed her. After inhaling deeply, she made the decision to act independently. Lili decided to begin by looking up the neighborhood Harry had mentioned in her recollection. She had to locate him, she knew.
After looking for a few hours, Lili found the home that matched Harry’s description. It was a dilapidated structure with a neglected yard and flaking paint. Heart thumping in her chest, she ascended the broken path. She inhaled deeply before rapping on the door.

Lili felt a mixture of fear and determination in her heart as she arrived at the foster family’s house. The house was situated on a run-down lot with a peeling fence and overgrown plants.
Taking a deep breath, she gripped her handbag tightly and knocked on the door. With a creak, the door opened, revealing a woman with a cold, harsh face.
Sharply, the woman inquired, “Can I help you?”
“Hello, I’m Lili,” she said, attempting to sound assured. “I was sent by Child Protective Services to take some happy pictures of the children for their records.”
The woman gave her a wary look. “Why haven’t I heard about this?”

Lili forced a laugh. It was an impromptu decision. We merely wish to demonstrate the children’s progress and update our records.”
A tense minute later, the woman reluctantly moved aside. “All right. Make it swift. The living room is where they are.
Lili was immediately taken aback by the house’s icy, unwelcoming vibe. The furniture appeared ancient and worn, and the wallpaper was coming off. She went down a small hallway after the woman, who identified herself as Greta. Lili’s greatest fears were realized when she saw multiple child support checks sitting around on a side table.
Greta gave the kids stern commands to clean up and look nice. Harry limped into the living room with a few other kids, their features pallid and gaze downcast. Harry’s face brightened up with hope and recognition the moment he saw Lili.

Lili said, “Hello, Harry,” trying not to show her anxiety. “I’m just here to take some pictures for the record.”
Harry gave a nod, his gaze flitting tensely towards Greta. The other kids were expressionless as they stood in a queue. Lili took a few pictures, seeing the children’s thinness and the terror in their eyes, and her heart ached.
Lili’s mind raced as she walked about the room, feigning to snap more photos. She realized she had to have proof as soon as possible. She said, attempting to get a better look at more of the house, “Could I take a picture of the children by the kitchen table?”

Greta’s eyes narrowed. “Why would you need that?”
“Just to demonstrate their everyday lives,” Lili said with ease. “It helps to have a variety of settings.”
Grumblingly, Greta nodded and escorted the kids to the kitchen. Lili looked about as they strolled, observing the empty cabinets and the heaped dirty dishes in the sink. It was obvious that the house was not a caring place.

Greta’s suspicions seemed to grow suddenly. Moving aside, she took out her phone and dialed a call. “Howdy, Child Safety Services? Has someone been sent over to take photos today?”
Lili’s heart pounded. She was aware that her time was limited. She took a couple more rapid pictures, showing the desolation of the kids’ surroundings. Greta heard the reply on the other end, and her cheeks flushed crimson with rage.
“You lied!” Greta yelled, her gaze piercing. “Get out of my house right now, or I’ll call the police!”

Lili didn’t hold out for two explanations. With her thoughts already working on a strategy to help Harry and the other kids, she ran to the door. Greta’s husband showed up as she went outside, looking equally incensed.
He shouted, “Don’t you ever come back here!” “Or you’ll regret it!”
Lili nodded and headed for her car, her heart racing. Her resolve became more steadfast as she drove away. She was aware that she couldn’t abandon those kids in such a horrible circumstance. At any cost, she would find a way to assist them.

Lili kept thinking about Harry and the other kids stuck in that awful house that night. Acting was necessary, she realized. She struggled under the weight of the hefty ladder she had retrieved from her garage and loaded it into her car. Under the cover of darkness, she drove back to the foster family’s house, her pulse pounding with terror and determination.

She parked a short distance away when she got there, being cautious not to make any noise. Silently, she moved the ladder to the side of the house and placed it beneath the window that she recognized as the kids’ room. With the exception of the sporadic sound of leaves rustling in the breeze, the house was deathly quiet.

Lili gave the window a gentle touch. A few tense seconds later, Harry’s face emerged. When he saw her, his eyes widened with relief and surprise. Lili gestured for him to stop talking and told him to get the other kids together. Harry gave a nod and then vanished back into the space.
The kids gingerly climbed down the ladder and out of the window one by one. Lili helped every youngster down securely while she stood at the bottom. With every little, frigid fingers that closed around hers, her heart hurt. At last, every child had left. They made their way swiftly and soundlessly to Lili’s car, crammed in as loudly as they could.
Lili had a brief feeling of relief as she drove off. But when she noticed flashing lights in her rearview mirror, her heart skipped a beat. They were pulled over by a police cruiser, and a stern-looking officer got out.

He demanded, “Ma’am, what were you doing with these children?”
Harry said something from the rear seat before Lili could reply. “Officer, could you please? We had to go right away!”
With solemn and fearful expressions on their faces, the other kids nodded in agreement. The officer noticed the desperation in Lili’s eyes and glanced at them before turning back to Lili.
He questioned the kids, “Is this true?”
“Yes!” they exclaimed together. “We were treated very badly.”
The policeman’s face went round. Retaking a step back, he radioed for assistance. “All right,” he murmured. “We will handle things further. We’ll see to it that everyone is secure.”
Lili experienced a surge of comfort. After letting her go, the police promised to look into the foster family and return the kids to the services. She knew she had made the proper decision as she drove home. At last, Harry and the other kids would be secure.

A year later, Lili was driving through a quiet area with a brilliant sun overhead. Harry, who was formally her adopted son, sat next to her. His happy smile stood in sharp contrast to the scared youngster she’d met a year before.
“Are you excited to see everyone?” Lili enquired, giving Harry a kind grin.
“Yeah, I’m excited to see how they’re doing,” Harry enthusiastically answered.
They started off with a little, nicely mowed yard and a comfortable house. The door opened as they approached it, revealing a small child who gave Lili and Harry a quick hug. Warm smiles beamed from behind her new parents.
“I really appreciate you coming to visit,” the mother remarked. “She’s doing so well in school and making lots of friends.”
Lili felt her heart fill with excitement as they proceeded to the next home. Every visit was full of the same growth and satisfaction stories. The kids, who had been abandoned and afraid, were now doing well in caring homes.

Harry turned to Lili as they were leaving for home. “Liz, I’m so happy you came across us that evening. Our lives were altered by you.”
With emotion blurring her eyes, Lili gave him a firm handshake. “Harry, no. Everyone of you altered mine.”
