North Carolina Mom of 4 Tragically Dies during Hurricane Flooding – Details

Hurricane Helene’s flooding carried the mother away, leaving her husband and 8-year-old child to watch helplessly as they too scurried to safety.

A loud, explosion-like sound surprised Melissa Hensley Guinn, a mother from North Carolina, and her husband Jamie Guinn. This was the start of a terrible story that would eventually result in Jamie losing his wife and their children losing a mother.

Jamie and Melissa discovered the back door broken as they went to look for the source of the loud bang. Jamie saw the garage had already been swept away when he hurried to get something to barricade the door.

Jamie desperately shouted out for their 8-year-old son, River, who was at home with them in Minneapolis, North Carolina, as the house started to crumble shortly after. Three other kids, Ethan, Sebastian, and Brandon, were also raised by the couple.

Even though Jamie and Melissa kept a close eye on the situation from their riverfront home, they were taken aback by the abrupt change in circumstances. After a hasty and anxious search through the crumbling house, Jamie located their kid, River.

He looked up to see Melissa sitting atop what was left of their house. Sadly, this was the final time he would see her alive.

He remembered Melissa yelling at him to be careful, making him think there was going to be another landslide. Jamie narrated with emotion, “So I tried to grab my little boy and threw him on my back because I figured it was another slide, and by the time I turned back around to try to make myself alert … she was gone.”

Jamie remembered the panicked minutes he’d had trying to locate his wife. He called her name in a desperate attempt to find her, but she was nowhere to be seen. Turning to face him, his small boy said he believed Melissa had vanished.

Jamie was shocked that she never showed up again despite their constant cries. He couldn’t even recall if their house was still standing in the midst of the turmoil.

River and Jamie were able to take refuge at a neighbor’s home. Jamie acknowledged that the physical suffering from his broken back and later-infected head injuries was insignificant in comparison to the emotional anguish of losing Melissa.

He thought about how the water swelled at an unfathomable rate, calling it something no one in their neighborhood could have predicted. He was at a loss for where to begin reconstructing their lives following such a catastrophic event due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene’s floods.

Right now, Jamie is grieving his wife and finding it difficult to accept life without her. He thought about how close they were, spending every day together and being very much a part of one other’s life.

“Just going from having that person in your life every day to literally gone in the blink of an eye, it just shows how often you might take for granted being with someone,” he said.

The couple was just weeks away from celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary, having been together for seventeen years. “She was the absolute greatest mother and wife we could have all even asked for,” he exclaimed.

The couple regularly showed their affection for one another throughout the day, and they treasured the annual custom of exchanging modest gifts. Jamie’s response was always the same—playful, “Love you more.”

This year, he made the choice to give Melissa a little plaque that listed all the different causes for their love, signifying the strength of their relationship.

Elizabeth Hensley, Melissa’s sister, has also been grieving her sister’s passing and consoling Jamie. She understood how much Jamie was grieving after losing his wife, their four sons’ mother, and his companion.

According to her, Jamie was having difficulty coping with the death of the woman who co-cooked their meals and kept their house clean. Though there were times when Jamie’s patience was put to the limit, Elizabeth thought back to how their laughing brightened their days.

She admitted, “He grieves the woman he plan[sic] to spend the rest of his life with,” in her sorrow. We love you, Jamie, but he will have to live the rest of his life with only her memories. We are so happy that you are a member of our family and that you liked Melissa so much.”

Elizabeth believes that their link will strengthen despite the fact that their family will never be the same. She also wants Jamie to know how much she cares for him during this trying time.

Elizabeth also asked people to help Jamie and his sons as they start again after he had surgery for a head injury. “Our family will bear a great deal of hardship in the days, weeks, and years to come. Please give if you are able to. If not, just offer prayers and share,” the writer penned.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established by Jamie’s friends and family to help with medical costs and other financial hardships he could have during this trying time. The fundraiser’s coordinator, Brandy Burroughs, mentioned that Melissa was a colleague.

“A great mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend to anyone that was in her life,” was how she put it. She was an all-around lovely soul who was powerful, passionate, giving, and gorgeous. Everyone she came into contact with in her lifetime will miss her terribly.”

Although Jamie has a big task ahead of him, he is surrounded by a caring community that is willing to help in the form of prayers, money gifts, and emotional support.
