My Fiancé Left Me and His Twin Daughters on Vacation with a Note Saying, ‘I Have to Disappear — You’ll Understand Soon’
I thought we were celebrating a fresh start when I agreed to go on a trip with my fiancé and his twin daughters. However, everything took a confusing turn when I found a mysterious note after returning from the resort’s pool. What awaited us at home was an unexpected shock that changed everything.
At a charity function three years ago, I got to know Matt. I was immediately won over by his charisma, self-assurance, and affection for his girls. His five-year-old twins, Ella and Sophie, were the cutest young ladies.

They had lost their mother when they were just a year old, and Matt had done a fantastic job of bringing them up to be well-mannered young ladies.
Those two made it easier for me because I didn’t have much experience with children. Every time I was around, they would approach me and tell me school anecdotes, and before I realized it, they had won my heart.

After a particularly demanding workday, Matt and the girls arrived at my flat one evening. They held handcrafted cards embellished with stickers and glitter.
“We wanted to surprise you!” With a smile, Ella pushed the card into my grasp. The message inside said, “Thank you for being a part of our family.”

I was speechless. Before meeting Matt, I had dated men who were utterly afraid of commitment—it was almost a pattern. I’ve lost count of the bad dates I endured. But as I looked into Matt’s warm eyes and saw his little daughters beside him, I was filled with a sense of belonging. I adored all three of them.
So, when Matt proposed just a week later, after a heartfelt dinner his kids helped prepare, there was only one answer I could give: “Yes!” Without hesitation, I moved into Matt’s home, excited to start a new chapter in my life that was finally falling into place.

I then got to work organizing the wedding. I had specific ideas regarding the setting, the girls’ gowns, my dress, and the flowers. I was in the zone since I’m a type-A personality, but after a few months, Matt became overburdened.
Matt said, “Let’s take a break before the chaos hits,” as we were sleeping one night. A trip with the family, just the four of us. Before the big day, it will be our short getaway.
I agreed to go, even though leaving with so much unfinished work wasn’t ideal. But he truly needed this break. We planned a trip to a charming island resort.
The first two days felt magical. I loved watching Ella and Sophie build sandcastles with Matt on the beach, their laughter echoing as they splashed around in the pool. It was pure joy to witness.

“Dorothy, look!” Sophie pointed to a shell-decorated sandcastle and shouted. “Isn’t it pretty?”
I told her, “It’s beautiful,” as I took a phone photo.
Matt approached, wiping the sand from his hands. “You ready for some ice cream, girls?”
“Yes!” they both exclaimed simultaneously as they dashed forward.
Matt wrapped my shoulders with his arm. “This was a wise decision. This was necessary.
I leaned in close to him. “Yeah, we really did.”

Since I understood that most people didn’t have this many idyllic family moments, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Our third afternoon at the resort was when that occurred.
That morning, Matt had desired to remain in the hotel. The girls were clamoring for more time in the pool, but Dad was too exhausted. I thus took them myself.
However, by midday, Matt had yet to descend and was not returning my calls, so I gathered the ladies and made my way back to our floor.

At the pool, the girls happily talked about their newfound friendships. As I unlocked the door to our room, I hardly heard what they were saying. I froze and pushed it open.
I didn’t notice anything wrong right away. However, I had a gut feeling that something wasn’t right. It wasn’t until I went farther inside that I realized Matt’s suitcase was missing.
The cleaning service had come by because the room was immaculately shined and our beds were made. Only my belongings and the girls’ belongings were visible when I went to the restroom.
His phone charger was gone, along with his clothes and toiletries.
“Dorothy, where’s Daddy?” Pulling at my hand, Ella inquired.
I shook my head, my heart pounding, and at last I saw a note on the nightstand: “I must vanish. You’ll understand soon.”

The hefty paper shuddered in my hands as I sat down firmly on the bed. Go away? Even so, what did that mean? Was he in danger? Were we?
“Dorothy, are you okay?” With concern in her large eyes, Sophie muttered.
I tried to think fast and feigned a smile. In this case, what would a guardian do? Keep the girls away.
As I said, “I’m fine, sweetie,” “After cleaning up, let’s head downstairs for some ice cream. It’s likely that Daddy is also down there.

With a collective cheer, the females headed to the restroom. That was excellent. I couldn’t let them realize how panicked I was. Not quite yet. Not until I received some clarification.
However, a kind bellhop who observed Matt with bags calling for a cab said that he was really gone. In an attempt to be as discrete as possible, I tried calling, but he didn’t pick up.
Eventually, I was able to put the girls to sleep. Their dad had to leave early, I had told them, but the fib still made me feel bad. I spent infinite time scrolling through my phone texts while I was by myself on the balcony.

Matt has not responded yet. My mind was racing, so I bit my fingernails, a habit I hadn’t had in years. Has he changed his mind? Did he have something to hide from me?
I gave the front desk a ring to see if they had heard from Matt just in case. No, they hadn’t. I left his phone a few more messages. There was nothing to do but pack up and head home when morning arrived.
The journey on the plane was painful. It was fortunate that the girls were busy coloring.
“Are we going to see Daddy when we get home?” Ella inquired.

I took a deep breath. “I’m sure we will, sweetie.” Since I honestly didn’t know what we were going back to, I detested lying.
I was worn out by the time we landed. I was so exhausted from the previous restless night that I fumbled with the keys multiple times, trying to unlock the door to our house while juggling our baggage, and the cab trip felt way too lengthy.
“Come on, girls,” I yawned and called out. “We’re home.”
However, I came to a complete halt as soon as I entered.
In the center of the living room was a blanket-wrapped bundle. It was in motion.
“What is that?” I said to myself in a whisper.
The females hurried passed me before I could respond.

“A puppy!” With a squeal, Ella let go of her backpack. “It’s a puppy!”
A small St. Bernard protruded from the wriggling bundle, its tail waving wildly. The puppy licked Sophie’s face while she knelt and giggled.
“Is he ours to keep? Dorothy, please.” Sophie’s eyes were wide with anticipation as she begged.
I was in too much shock to respond. But then I picked up the puppy’s discarded blanket and noticed a note inside.
“I know this came as a shock and I probably acted too hastily, but allow me to explain, Dorothy. At the motel, I was browsing my phone when I noticed my friend was giving away puppies online. To ensure that this little baby would be ours, I had to head out right away.
Max, do you recall the tale you told me about your early years at St. Bernard? Since you have brought love into our lives, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to restore that joy in yours.

I appreciate your deep concern for my daughters. I appreciate you picking me. We appreciate you settling in straight away and agreeing to be ours forever. I apologize for not explaining earlier, but I became overly thrilled. I apologize; please give Max Jr. a small pet.
With a sigh of relief, I slumped onto the couch and shook my head. I was so terrified of my silly fiancé! But there was a lovely reason why he had done it.
Max. It had been years since I had given him any thought. Max saved me from drowning at a family picnic when I was four years old. My guardian and hero was that dog. It had been awful to lose him to aging.
Then Max Jr. appeared, making the girls giggle and wagging his tail.
“Dorothy, what’s wrong?” Ella’s eyes gleamed as she asked.
I had a thick throat as I talked. “Nothin’, my love. I’m just… taken aback.”
The front door creaked open a few minutes later. Matt came in with a bag of dog supplies and a contrite appearance.

With hesitation, he said, “Surprise?”
I sprang up and rushed to him, unsure whether I should give him a senseless kiss or thrash him for frightening me. It was easier to kiss him.
“You had the option to tell me! Are you aware of the experiences I’ve had? Our lips separated, and I whispered, panting.
Matt tightened his arms around my waist and murmured, “I know, and I’m sorry,” However, I couldn’t take the danger that someone else would take all the dogs before I had a chance. I had to go back yesterday.
At that moment, Max Jr. bounded after the girls as they rushed over.
“Daddy, you got us the puppy?” Ella smiled and asked.
Matt knelt down and ruffled their hair as we parted ways. “Yes, darling! What are your thoughts? “Good surprise?”
“The best!” Instead, Sophie responded and gave him a firm embrace.
I was unable to remain angry since her sister joined them in their embrace. My frustration vanished as I saw the happiness on their faces. I wasn’t going to let him get away with it, though.
“You owe me big time,” I punched him in the chest as a warning.

Matt smiled. “Deal.”
We played with Max Jr. for the remainder of the evening. He spent a movie night with us, cuddled up on the couch, and chased the girls around the yard while barking joyfully.
Later, the puppy slept on our bed with Matt and me, where he would spend the remainder of his fantastic life.
Additionally, Matt gave me the best life possible, which was his way of paying me back.
