” Grassley was referring to the fact that the coffee cup was so fragile that it required constant replacement. In a separate letter, the question was posed whether or not alternatives with lower costs had been examined.

In a statement to CNN, the Air Force stated that it was no longer acquiring the cups that are “used in large transport aircraft.” This decision was made while the Air Force was working on developing more cost-effective alternatives.

The Air Force overpaid by around one million dollars for twelve of the soap dispensers and a select 46 replacement components that were installed on its C-17 transport planes, as indicated by an audit that was carried out over a period of two years and concluded in October 2024. Additionally, the service branch spent $149,072 more than the market price for the soap dispensers.

The conclusions were contested by Boeing, which stated in a statement that the analysis appeared to be “based on an inapt comparison of the prices paid for parts that meet aircraft and contract specifications and designs versus basic commercial items that would not be qualified or approved for use on the C-17.

” Boeing’s reply suggested that the comparison was not entirely accurate. It has been reported by The Independent that the inspector general has looked into the soap dispenser hotline request.
