Actor, martial artist, and cultural icon Chuck Norris is well-known for his parts in action films and TV series including “Walker, Texas Ranger.”
He became a household name thanks to his amazing martial arts abilities and thrilling performances.
But after his first marriage ended many years ago, Norris’ buddy Larry Morales came to the realisation that although the actor appeared to have everything, he was actually hollow on the inside. So he presented Norris to a woman he thought would make up for the gap in his life.
One night, Norris and a date were having dinner at a sushi restaurant with about a dozen pals. While they were eating, Morales entered the room with a young woman.
Morales used the occasion to introduce her to everyone in attendance, but Norris was too preoccupied to notice the arrival until Morales specifically called his name, indicating that he wanted Norris to meet O’Kelly.
For the first time, Norris looked at O’Kelly and found herself enthralled with her. She looked straight into his eyes, like an angel to him.
With a stutter of surprise and appreciation, he said, “Oh…er…hi! Good to meet you. Unfortunately, Norris’s surprise encounter with O’Kelly resulted in his date being irritated and leaving right away.
Morales kindly escorted O’Kelly back to her hotel following the meal. When Norris and O’Kelly had breakfast together the next morning, she invited him to her fashion show, where she would be showcasing various bridal dresses.
During the ceremony, O’Kelly experienced a comical moment of embarrassment when the train of one particular gown got tangled with a potted plant. “I was thinking about buying that potted plant!” Norris said, taking advantage of the chance to lighten the atmosphere.
Norris joyfully told his mother about his meeting with O’Kelly and her modelling adventures the day after the fashion show.
“Is that giving you any ideas about marriage?” his mother said, intrigued by the prospect of romance developing. “Nope, I’m never getting married again!” Norris firmly replied. He had no idea that fate had different ideas.
Norris and O’Kelly began their journey together as husband and wife on November 28, 1998, when they exchanged vows. Their marriage, more than twenty years later, is a monument to love, tenacity, and life’s unexpected turns.
The actor and his spouse did, however, openly discuss the horrific medical experience that permanently altered their life in 2017. O’Kelly had to utilise a gadolinium-based contrast agent for routine MRI scans that year. She was unaware at the time that this drug would cause her to have a nightmare.
“But when I went in for my first MRI, ideally, it would be nice to go in one time to the doctor for one scan,” O’Kelly said. “It had a contrast order… It was simply referred to as the contrast that I would be given, though I was unaware of this at the time.
She became aware that something was seriously amiss following the third MRI scan in eight days. “It started out with this intense burning inside my body that I can’t describe…it’s like somebody’s poured acid on your tissues,” she stated.
It got so severe one night at approximately one in the morning that she had to wake Norris. “I am a woman in good health. I mean, I’m the woman next to him in the Total Gym infomercials. “I’ve always been physically fit,” she said in an interview.
[…] But I wake him up at one o’clock in the morning and I’m like, ‘There’s something severely wrong with me. You must take me to the hospital immediately. O’Kelly went on.
Norris hurried her to the emergency room right away. However, her condition deteriorated as medical professionals attempted to treat her discomfort with drugs. “This was a repeat cycle for five or six different ER visits within a very short period of time,” O’Kelly stated.
The scorching sensation spread each time. “I remember being in my bathroom that evening, and it felt like something had hit my lymphatic system,” she said.
“[…] I felt like I’d been seeded with thousands of tiny little seeds or ants crawling all over me and I just grabbed my counter and said, ‘Dear God, I’m in trouble,'” she recounted.
Despite testing her for everything from multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and cancer, doctors were still perplexed. “When we got to the hospital in Houston this last time and I was so bad, I said, ‘Listen. […] I’m only going to be able to tell you this one time and I need you to listen to me very closely,'” O’Kelly said.
“‘I have been poisoned with gadolinium or by gadolinium and we don’t have much time to figure out how to get this out of my body or I’m going to die,'” she said.
“It was scaring me to death, you know, and I said, ‘It’s not…nothing’s going on here,'” revealed Norris, who had become frantic after witnessing his wife go. She’s dying. I said, “I need to contact someone,” after realising that she was dying in front of me at this hospital.
He then contacted Dr. Fong, an integrative physician, who instructed him to bring O’Kelly to his clinic right away. In order to get his wife to Reno, the actor rented a plane and a paramedic.
According to O’Kelly, “we were in Reno for five months,” “He only knew that I was quite ill. I just had some chelation testing done on me. I couldn’t breathe anymore, my left arm was fully drawn up, and my ribs were entirely fused together by the time I arrived. I was also unable to swallow.
Her meal had to be boiled in order for her to consume enough nutrients. It got to the point where she could only eat everything she wanted to. She had daily IV treatments for five months while doctors worked for weeks to stabilise her health.
“I’m so grateful, thank you, sweetie. My amazing spouse spent five months reading seventeen books while curled up on a couch next to me. “He never abandoned me,” O’Kelly remarked.
The action actor revealed, “My entire life is focused on keeping her as well as I possibly can, you know,” taking a break from his job to care for his wife during this period. I’ve been forced to abandon my cinematic career.
Thankfully, O’Kelly healed gradually. Nevertheless, the pair filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies, claiming that gadolinium had poisoned her, because they were determined to hold drug producers responsible.
The couple’s out-of-pocket medical costs came to about $2 million. Due to the information their lawsuit provided about gadolinium poisoning, the FDA mandated more warnings, and European regulators suggested that certain gadolinium dyes be discontinued.
Over the years, Norris has used social media to express his love and gratitude for his wife ever since she fully recovered. The Hollywood star paid tribute to his wife on Instagram in 2023, writing, “There’s nothing like enjoying the day with my wonderful wife.”
“The most incredible woman I could have ever hoped for is a true blessing from the Lord. Gena, you are loved. The post went on, “More than words can express.”
The actor posted on Facebook to commemorate their 26th wedding anniversary in November 2024, writing, “Happy 26th wedding anniversary to my beautiful wife! You constantly bring happiness, love, and innumerable amazing memories into my life.”
“I am incredibly grateful and fortunate to wake up next to the most amazing woman God could have ever given me. I cherish every moment I spend with you beyond measure. Gena, you are loved. “Always and forever,” Norris continued.
Norris was also able to resume acting after O’Kelly recovered. He had an appearance in the TV show “Hawaii Five-0,” in 2020, as Sergeant Major Lee Phillips.
In the Derek Ting-directed science fiction action movie “Agent Recon,” he made a comeback to the big screen in 2024, as Captain Alastair.
He is currently in his 80s and stays active, posting videos of himself boxing and lifting weights on Instagram. “Keeping a positive attitude and keeping your faith close is important,” he said in response to a question regarding his longevity.
“My wife Gena also takes great care of me, and my mom is still going strong at 99 years old, so I guess she passed on her great genes to me,” said Norris. Unfortunately, his mother passed away in December 2024.
“I am so thankful for the countless lessons she shared, the prayers she lifted for us, and the way she embodied the love of Christ every day,” he wrote on Instagram, expressing his sorrow. Mom, you are loved. Until we cross paths again.
