Gifted Love, Costly Consequences: A Wife’s Anniversary Surprise Gone Awry
A Wonderful Anniversary Gift from Woman’s Husband Brought Terrible Consequences for Her
The last thing Angela expects is for her husband, David, to surprise her with a gorgeous bracelet on their wedding anniversary and set off a police inquiry. Perhaps David’s profession as a lawyer is advantageous?
I’m more than familiar with courtroom drama because my husband, David, is a lawyer. Most evenings, over a glass of wine, we discuss the cases he works on; he always gives me the condensed, mostly anonymous versions of the stories.

However, I never imagined that I would become one of his stories.
David and I are conveniently located in the center of the city, making it simple to reach our clientele. David is a lawyer, as I mentioned, and I design custom wedding dresses. Consequently, we do not live in a tiny town where people are acquainted with one another. But secrets have a weird way of coming to light, trust me.
Our tenth wedding anniversary fell this year, and David was determined to make it truly memorable. He got me ten bouquets of flowers, one for each of our ten years of marriage, and placed an order for takeout from our favorite restaurant.

He surprised me with a jewelry box over dinner, and inside was a gorgeous bracelet. My thankfulness and affection for David were simply overflowing. It was that he had made the extra effort to make things so special, even with his hectic schedule.
“Happy anniversary, Ang,” he added, placing the wristband on me.
However, we were blissfully ignorant of the impending storm.

After David left for work the following day, I made plans to see Lauren, a friend from college. Our plan was to indulge on cake and pastries from our preferred café, followed by window shopping. We were keen to get Lauren an outfit for her master’s degree in microbiology, which she was about to receive.
“Ang, if all else fails,” she murmured. “You can always custom-make me a dress.”
I was working on a dress for her, of course.
We ate cake slices and spoke about everything and nothing when we arrived at the café. Lauren drooled when I showed her the bracelet on my wrist, expressing her affection for it.
Following that, we meandered through upscale shops. I was in my element because I like perusing clothing for ideas, and spending time with Lauren was always the highlight of the day.

However, our harmless browsing swiftly turned into a nightmare as soon as we stepped into the third store.
The overly eager salesperson at the store thought my bracelet was stolen and pressed the panic button. My new bracelet was taken off and placed on the glass counter for the police to examine when they arrived. The next thing I knew, I was facing theft charges.
Mika, the vendor, as her nametag said, searched through my purse and took my lipstick with her.
“So, you thought you could get away with it?” Mika chewed her gum and spoke.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I replied. This is my husband’s gift to me. I received it just last night.”

“You’re saying that your husband is the thief, then?”
I said to Lauren, “Phone David,” and she took her phone out of her bag right away.
The security guards at the store had a tight grip on me, not even letting me get out of the chair they’d forced me into, while we waited for the police and David to show up.
David finally materialized, his fitted clothes making him appear disorganized. And there he stood, prepared to protect my honor.
“What’s the situation here? “Are you okay, Angela?”
“David, they think I stole this bracelet!”

I told David everything with Lauren. And they put me in the back of their squad car when the cops showed up. The automobile smelled like rotten meat and stale cigarettes, and the seats were tacky. David and Lauren trailed closely behind.
The detective at the station informed us that my anniversary gift looked just like one that was taken two weeks earlier from a nearby museum.
Every pawn shop and retailer was informed about the occurrence and instructed to report any items that bore resemblance to the valuable bracelet.
“Detective,” David stated composedly. “There is miscommunication here. The bracelet that was taken had a different style. This one is unique to my spouse. Our wedding date is engraved on the clasp’s reverse. Examine carefully. The receipt is with me. If necessary, the store will confirm everything.”

I marveled at David. I could tell that he was feeling angry behind the surface of his unbelievably calm demeanor. David might face a lot of criticism from his witnesses and clients, but please do not try to disgrace me.
I had always admired that quality in David.
We could leave the police station after spending several hours there while we waited for the investigator to come back with David from the diamond store and verify everything he had stated.

There was a pot of steaming fresh pasta on the stove and fresh flowers on the table when we arrived, so I knew Lauren had been home.
“I can’t believe that happened,” I replied. “Thank you for being there.”
“Always, Ang. We can overcome anything as a team.

I took a shower to get rid of the station’s odor while David finished plating dinner. I was totally innocent, so I couldn’t believe what had happened, even though I felt fine. I allowed the hot water to stream down my back as I stood there, picturing David having to defend defenseless people on a daily basis.
When I sat down to dinner, he inquired, smiling, “Should I return the bracelet?” “Maybe switch it up for a pair of earrings?”
“Not a chance,” I replied. The bracelet held greater significance today than it did previously.
