Highway Hero: A Chance Encounter Leads to a Surprising Reward
Man Stops Traffic to Help Older Beggar Cross Highway, Finds New Car in Garage the Next Day
After stopping traffic to assist a homeless elderly man in crossing the street, a delivery man found a brand-new automobile in his garage the next day. He was astounded by both who and why had brought it.
Although Harry always tried his hardest, being a delivery guy is harder than anyone might imagine, despite the misconception that it’s an easy job. He was not a car owner. Usually, it worked really well when he utilised his scooter to deliver meals via a restaurant ordering app.

Short rides weren’t too difficult, but crossing the highway usually made things a little trickier, mostly because this season has seen occasional snowfall. Harry had to exercise additional caution because he was riding a scooter on the main road, where people always seemed to get angrier and scarier.
He noticed an older man attempting to cross the road that day as he was attempting to leave the highway as soon as possible. He appeared thin and chilly in his dishevelled jacket. The man shuddered as the automobiles passed him, their honks echoing. Harry stopped his scooter in front of the man because he thought someone would run him over if that continued.

“Daddy! It’s a gift. With a gesture towards the man, Lucy spoke.
Taking hold of the man’s elbow, he said, “Sir, let me help you cross.” With his other hand out, Harry began guiding the elderly guy through it.
The reason the automobiles stopped in the middle of the road was because Harry held up his palm and gave them a menacing glance. Fortunately, after a short while, they arrived to the other side, where the elderly beggar grinned broadly at him.
“Young man, thank you so much. It’s unbelievable that I crossed at last. It takes a long time every time. The old guy added, “My house is this way, but I walk through town on the other side,” to which Harry nodded.
“Thank you very much, sir. But do attempt to find a different route home. It is quite risky to cross the highway. It seems like drivers get a little frantic, and it’s worse now of year. Harry warned, “Be careful out there,” and adjusted his scooter so he could get back on it.
“Young man, hold on. The elder man reached for Harry and said, “Can you tell me your address so I can send a thank you gift?”
“Oh, that’s not necessary.”
“Please. Harry nodded and spat out his address. “I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t repay this kind gesture,” he stressed.

After his parents passed away a few years ago, he inherited the house, which put him in a good neighbourhood. His three kids were happy in their new house, but they were all very sad to leave their grandparents behind. Tragically, his employment was lost due to the epidemic, and he was now solely dependent on food delivery for his family’s subsistence.
He had to work eighteen hours a day on certain days to support his family. Harry’s wife had left him while they were young, leaving him as their lone parent. Despite not having a car to adequately make those deliveries, he was determined to provide his kids a bright future. That was what he was saving for.
Nevertheless, he had no expectations from this pitiful elderly man. The older beggar waved and said, “Thank you again!” as Harry rolled away to do his duties.

But when he returned home from working on his last order the next day, he nearly crashed his scooter. His children were jumping on the grass with excitement, and there was a brand-new automobile in the open garage. He didn’t usually let children outside, but Lucy, his oldest child, was grinning as well.
“Guys, what’s going on?” With wide eyes, he threw his scooter onto the grass and muttered.
“Daddy! It’s a gift. Lucy spoke out and gestured to the man Harry had missed.
“Mister! How come you’re here? Is that the vehicle you drive? How? How come? Why not?” Harry approached the elderly beggar he had assisted in crossing the street, stammering through inquiries. He was unaware of what was going on.
If the man owned a car, why was he strolling around endangering his life? Above all, why was the vehicle in his garage?
“I have no desire to sell it. I want my work to be truly meaningful. Please accept it.
The man grinned and said, “I told you that if I didn’t repay the gesture, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.” “My name is Reginald, and this car… I bought it many years ago… for my grandson.”
The elder man went on, much to Harry’s confusion. “During our marriage, my wife and I only had one son, and she left me when my business failed. Of course, she snatched my child, but I did my best. Even so, it was insufficient. My son grew accustomed to his stepfather’s wealth, and I was unable to match it.”
While Harry listened carefully, Lucy remarked, “That’s terrible,” cuddling her siblings close.
“You’re right, madam. Occasionally, my son would call, but our relationship was never close. My grandson and I had met a few times, and he was turning eighteen a few years ago. Reginald gestured at the car, saying, “I got this because I wanted to do something for him.” “He hated it.”

“It’s a vintage Cadillac!” Shocked, Harry pointed out.
Like his father, my grandson enjoys all things shiny and new. That was unknown to me. He mentioned that he had previously received a brand-new SUV from his step-grandfather, who was his real grandfather,” Reginald gulped. “I couldn’t drive it too much, so I had to take it home. It was too painful. It’s time for someone to own it, though, as I preserved it in excellent condition. Your work outfit indicated that you are a food delivery person, so I assumed you could make good use of the car.”
“Sir, I am unable to accept this costly present from an unknown person. Harry shook his head, not wanting to seem insensitive, but incredibly appreciative that someone had given him any attention at all.
“Please carry out. It’s unused and just sits there collecting dust. I want it to go to someone who deserves it. The older man maintained, “A man who would stop in the middle of the road to help an old beggar with nothing deserves something like this.”
Harry lowered his voice and moved near to Reginald so his children wouldn’t hear him say, “Sir, you could sell this car and live a better life.”
The elderly man gave a headshake. “Money is not important to me. I need to eat now, so I’m begging for it, but I never take much. Not much is needed by me. Even if my house has issues right now, I still think it’s adequate because I paid cash for it years ago. When my body managed to obtain this car, I saved everything I could, just to have it turned down. I don’t want to sell it since I was killed by the greed in my son’s and grandson’s eyes. I want my work to be truly meaningful. Please accept it.
There was no denying the man’s genuineness. Harry felt the moisture rising in Reginald’s eyes and swallowed hard before nodding. With a gentle “thank you,” he gave the elderly beggar a hug.
“How about some dinner?” Lucy smiled and made an offer. The elder man attempted to decline Harry’s offer when he made it again, but they persisted.
They had a great time and dinner. Harry’s children were thrilled to have another elderly person around because they missed their grandparents so much.

Harry arrived home early the following day to spend more time with his children and to truly have fun after delivering everything in the Cadillac.
Reginald was treated like a member of their family, one that appreciated one another more than anything material could purchase, when he invited Reginald to join them every Friday for a special meal.
A few months later, the old guy passed away, and the only people who attended his burial and will never forget him were Harry and his children.
What lessons may we draw from this tale?
- Treat others well, and you’ll receive unexpected rewards. Harry was rewarded for his good deeds by the cosmos, but getting a car was the biggest surprise.
- Instill in your kids the importance of work over money. Reginald’s child and grandchild were unable to comprehend the significance of the car he had worked so hard to get, but it was much appreciated by another family.
