Toddler’s Eye Severely Damaged After Unexpected Kiss—Parents Warn Others

Toddler’s eye ”melts away” after wrong person kissed him

Every parent has probably witnessed their children occasionally get eye infections.

However, Michelle Saaiman discovered something horrific when she examined her son’s eye more closely.

believed it to be an April Fool’s hoax.

A heartbreaking tale of a little child who got herpes in his cornea from a kiss and is now facing the horrifying prospect of losing his eye has surfaced.

Witnessing their child suffer from something they never anticipated is every parent’s worst nightmare.

Last August, Namibian mother Michelle Saaiman noticed something strange in her 16-month-old son Juwan’s eye. At first, she assumed it was just an eye infection.

However, once the condition worsened and antibiotic drops failed, a physician verified the unthinkable: Juwan had contracted herpes simplex virus (HSV), most likely from someone kissing him around the eye who had an active cold sore.

Michelle and her husband were shocked by the diagnosis.

“The doctor informed me that a fever blister was developing in my child’s cornea,” Michelle said to Metro. I believed it was an April Fool’s joke, so I was actually staring at the doctor, wondering if it was April 1.

What caused his eye to “melt away”
Unfortunately, Juwan’s cornea was so severely damaged by the herpes that he lost all vision in that eye. When the natural lubricant was gone, Juwan’s eye started to “melt away,” and a 4mm hole appeared. Doctors had thought he would lose his eye entirely.

“He basically lost all feeling in the eye by that point, and he was unable to see anything because the herpes had just caused so much damage,” Michelle said. It indicated that the brain had stopped communicating with the eye because it no longer recognized it. The eye dried out when the gel that had been shielding it vanished.

Juwan’s parents flew him to Cape Town for specialized therapy in order to give their son a chance.

To try to save his cornea, the toddler had amnion graft surgery. The family is preparing for another major operation in April to move nerves from his leg to his eye, and his eyelids were stitched together as a precaution. This treatment will open the door for a corneal transplant the following year if it is successful.

Michelle believes Juwan has shown incredible bravery in spite of everything that has happened to him. “Juwan has always had a smile on his face and is such a trooper.” However, he was in excruciating discomfort,” she claimed. “All of that is unfair to such a small human being.”

Challenges and uncertainty

It makes sense that Michelle and her husband were initially “really, really angry” with the individual who had infected their son with the herpes virus.

Michelle remarked, “My husband and I were just upset with whoever was so self-centered as to kiss my child in the face while he had an active fever blister.” “Love is the source of kisses. Therefore, I’m confident that whoever gave him this didn’t do it on purpose or with the goal of hurting him.

The family has faced many obstacles and uncertainties along the way. Juwan’s parents had to deal with weeks of medical procedures, including getting the appropriate medication from specialists in New York. They were always afraid that the herpes will spread to his other eye or brain.

Even though the virus has been partially confined, Juwan’s parents are still trying to preserve his vision because the damage to his eye is irreparable.

Increasing consciousness

Michelle is educating people about the grave dangers of herpes virus transmission and how even something as seemingly innocuous as a kiss may have permanent consequences.

“You should have a fever blister in your mouth or on your lips,” she stated. “I’ve never heard of a fever blister developing on a corneal surface in my life.”

She described the encounter in a long Facebook post that has subsequently gone viral. Additionally, a campaign has been established to assist with Juwan’s treatment’s exorbitant expenses, which include costly medication and airfare to South Africa.

According to Michelle, every donation matters if you feel driven to assist. “We are making every effort to save our son’s eye, but it has been a long and difficult journey.”

It’s probably common knowledge that when you’re unwell, you should avoid close contact with young children; this was made even clearer during the pandemic years.

But sometimes people just want to give tiny ones a quick kiss or show them how much they care, and it’s easy to forget. However, things went very wrong in this instance, therefore it’s critical to warn people about the dangers.

This tale is a potent warning to always use caution when disseminating diseases, particularly in the presence of susceptible children. We’re hoping for the best for Juwan, who is courageous and amazing. He and his family need all the support we can give them!
