Meet Zohran Mamdani’s Mother, the Hollywood Filmmaker Who Shaped His Political Journey
Few people anticipated that a filmmaker’s son would change the political narrative of the city when voters cast their ballots.
However, for Zohran Mamdani, the road to power started at home, where lessons in justice, art, and inquiry were taught on a daily basis, rather than in City Hall.

She met Mahmood there, a scholar who was teaching at Makerere University in Kampala at the time. After the two fell in love, their son was born in Kampala.
Mira brought flashbacks of her early career setbacks, when the industry questioned her ability to be innovative.
Mira eventually raised a number of millions of dollars to make “Mississippi Masala” a reality. Denzel Washington starred in the movie, which was filmed in Uganda and Mississippi.

Mahmood studied these issues through academics, whereas Mira used film to explore identity and belonging.
